5 1. OVERVIEW EMERALD handles the capture and the playback of MPEG-2 Transport Streams compliant with the DVB, ATSC and ISDB standards. Emerald is the best solution for broadcasting MPEG-2, DVB, ATSC and ISDB signals at a fraction of the cost of traditional video servers. It provides a seamless Transport Stream for long-term playout through the continuous update of MPEG-2 files. With multiple I/O ports and various disk options, EMERALD is the most scalable product in the industry. 6 1.1.2 Main Features Scalability: Emerald supports 1 to 4 input/output pairs and can store from 18GB to 360 GB of transport streams. Emerald comes in 3 different «flavors» and enables users to choose the suitable package to meet their specific needs. The remote control user interface allows users to share the unit among several personnel simultaneously to maximize cost efficiency. High Data throughput: Emerald is the fastest stream server in the industry and provides outstanding storage performance with speeds of over 200 Mbps to and from storage disks. TYPICAL APPLICATIONS 2.1 SIGNAL SOURCE SUBSTITUTION Emerald provides the ability to broadcast in a loop mode selected sequences when the broadcast process is interrupted because of a failure or when there is a major change in configuration. 2.2 CONTINUOUS RECORDING FOR BROADCASTERS Emerald can continuously record the last hour of broadcast content and is able to record simultaneously up to 4 transport streams in a continuous mode. 2.3 VALIDATION OF BROADCAST CHAIN INTEGRATION When setting up equipment for demonstration or creating a transport stream, Emerald helps users to save time and validate easily different modules in the broadcast chain. 2.4 SIGNAL SOURCE FOR DEVELOPMENT AND MANUFACTURING In a lab environment, Emerald is the most scalable, flexible and cost-effective solution for developing the signal environment engineers need. 8 The variety of digital TV standards and transmission infrastructures makes it often impossible to capture a feed without going directly to the source. The Emerald portable unit allows users to capture the content they are interested in and is the perfect tool to manage content acquisition (i.e. HD feed, stream with DVB subtitles, ISDB signal) while in the field. 9 3. GENERAL ARCHITECTURE Emerald is based on a client server architecture. The server running on the Emerald platform manages data transfers from and to the hard drives located on the platform. Software clients can be run from the EMERALD platform or anywhere from the Local Area Network. Each software client takes control of 1 I/O pair at the same time. 10 4. SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION Emerald features a player/recorder application, which is inspired by VCR controls under the StreamPulse denomination. In addition, the product features ISDB support to meet the Japanese market requirements. Finally the Stream Creation package supports the edition of standard or custom Transport streams. 4.1 STREAM PULSE APPLICATION The StreamPulse software is based on a client server architecture. The server runs on the EMERALD platform and interfaces the acquisition module with the hard drives. It manages up to 4 I/O pairs of ports that can be assigned to a Play function and/or Record function individually, through the StreamPulse client. Users take control of 1 I/O pair at the same time, leaving somebody else the unused resources. Based on a client-server architecture, the software application can be run on the EMERALD platform or from anywhere on the network. This architecture provides flexibility to the user and provides the ability to multi-task the EMERALD platform, by sharing the different I/O pairs among users. The StreamPulse application takes control of 2 I/O ports that are of the same kind (ASI, SPI, SMPTE310M or DHEI). Then it is possible to play and record simultaneously on the two ports selected. 11 4.1.1 Play Panel Dedicated to the Play function, the player controls the different commands and parameters for a Transport Stream playback. It supports a packet size of 188 and 204. When a file is selected, the bit rate is computed. It is based on the embedded PCR (Program Clock Reference) in the stream. Users can set this bit rate to a different value The Preview button gives you detailed information about the stream and a snapshot of the video streams encoded, in the form of a thumbnail sketch. The Preview also features detailed information about the video and audio characteristics. This document is confidential. 12 Figure 4 Transport Stream Preview The External clock check box enables you to use an external clock reference for the playback of transport streams. Begin and end locators: Streams can be edited before playout using starting and ending marks. This allows users to ignore the end and/or the beginning of a stream. The GOP (Group Of Pictures) alignment option synchronizes the begin and end marks with GOP boundaries. This option allows users to generate cleaner contents. It is especially valuable when playing streams in a loop mode. The loop mode enables the continuous playback of the Transport Stream stored on the disks. Seamless looping: Playing continuously a video sequence, which may be decoded without any artifacts, entails the modification of the stream on the fly during each loop. It is why StreamPulse offers the continuous updating of continuity counters, programs and elementary streams time stamps as well as a time updates of the tables. 13 Packet properties: In order to maximize flexibility, EMERALD. Original packet size can be changed as well as physical interface parameters. Those parameters reflect the nature of the signal interface. In the case of DHEI, StreamPulse supports the DVS178 standard specifying a packet size of 192 bytes ( ) for the cable return channel. When selecting this option, it is possible to indicate a bit rate for the files, included in the play list. It is also possible to schedule the time when the playlist will start. 14 4.1.2 Record Panel Dedicated to the Record function, the Recorder controls the different commands and parameters for the acquisition of a Transport Stream. Based on that incoming bit rate, the Recorder displays continuously the available space on the disks. It is stated in seconds. The Duration control allows the setting of time concerning the data capture. Finally, The loop mode enables a continuous capture onto the disks. 15 Acquisition settings enable the flexible record of configuration. The signals you deal with are not always the one you expect. These parameters guarantee that you can record a signal if there is one. Figure 11 Acquisition settings (SPI) The Record Scheduler lets you plan a stream acquisition, by specifying the time and date when the operation should start and the duration of the record. Figure 12 Recorder Scheduler 4.2 ISDB SUPPORT StreamPulse enhancements StreamPulse supports ISDB-C streams, as they are Transport Streams. The benefit lies in the usage of ISDB-S TMCC streams. 16 This option is available for the ASI and SPI interfaces since ISDB-S is not specified over DHEI or SMPTE310M. The ISDB-S standard provides a hierarchical modulation and specifies a framing mechanism, known under the name of TMCC (Transport Multiplex Configuration and Control). Those streams are not supported by standard MPEG-2 transport streams equipment. Emerald supports the TMCC streams by means of 3 dimensions: First, Emerald supports the TMCC preview for quick check before playing. Figure 13 TMCC preview The view displays TMCC data general information such as the bit rate, the number of Transport Streams framed into the TMCC data. This view provides a reading for the Emergency flag. The structure of the frame appears on the left part, and displays information on each TS being part of the TMCC frame. Secondly, Emerald supports the TMCC streams playback. If EMERALD plays that kind of stream on an SPI physical interface, the user has the choice to set the PSYNC signal on a slot (packet), frame or super-frame. This document is confidential. 17 Figure 14 Packet Properties for an SPI interface when ISDB option is set This particular feature provides flexibility when feeding an ISDB-S modulator that uses EMERALD. Finally, EMERALD supports the recording of TMCC streams but also Real-time demultiplexing of a TMCC stream. This feature allows the monitoring of the content of a TMCC Streams, by displaying the Transport Streams composing the TMCC stream. When the user selects a transport stream ID, a tool tip appears to give information about the slot used for the selected TS and its transmission mode. Example of a tool tip: TSID 0x Slots => Slot 1-6: QPSK(5/6), Slot 7-10: QPSK(3/4). Then by selecting ok and by enabling the Active loop through, EMERALD will extract in realtime the Transport Stream present on the input and play it back, using its initial rate on the output. It allows the monitoring of the different Transport Streams making the TMCC stream. From this point on, the user can store on the disk one Transport Stream, by pressing the record button. 18 4.2.2 ISDB tools While StreamPulse enables our customers to handle in real-time ISDB-S streams, tools have been developed to combine transport streams with TMCC (ISDB-S) or TSMF (ISDB-C) framed streams. Through a reverse mechanism, it extracts the Transport streams part of a framed ISDB stream ISDB combiner The first ISDB tool allows users to combine several streams into 1 framed stream. The application features a wizard that helps users through the different operations. Figure 16 ISDB combiner welcome panel. The ISDB demux allows the truncating of the initial stream or the extracting of the Transport Streams composing it. This document is confidential. 21 4.3.1 Multiplexer and Table editors The MPEG-2 Multiplexer gives you the ability to create custom transport streams while controlling many parameters. Video and audio elementary streams are provided with the unit, such as building blocks to help you to create transport streams. Supporting DVB, ISDB and ATSC, the multiplexer is integrated with the different Table Editors that are dedicated to DVB, ATSC or ISDB. Figure 20 Offline multiplexer This document is confidential. 22 Figure 21 DVB table editor Private tables & descriptor edition If you customize tables/descriptors defined in a standard, or if you work on next generation standard, you need to edit your data. To wait for the next edition tools or build tools for a one shot usage becomes rapidly a fastidious task. Thales Broadcast & Multimedia introduces two complementary tools to support all the needs related to private table or descriptor edition. The Private Syntax builder enables you to define tables and descriptor patterns in a user friendly way. Scripting mechanisms and customization efforts often rely on complicated language typing. The Private Syntax builder features a wizard that guides you through the process of defining custom table or descriptor formats. Stored into a file, syntax patterns are easily imported into the OpenEditor to build tables or descriptors following the model elaborated using the Private Syntax Builder.
