5 WinFlash2 & USB Flash Prommer/SimLock GENERAL INFORMATION 1 General information This chapter is intended to provide you with an initial overview regarding the advantages and options of the WinFlash2 software as well as the appropriate programmers. The first section, however, is designed to help you navigate easily within these operating instructions. General information about these instructions These operating instructions describe the necessary steps that have to be taken to install the software and the device environment as well as on how to apply the software to NRI devices the firmware of which is to be updated. The index and glossary shorten the search for specific explanations. Text conventions To make it easier for you to navigate within these instructions, the following accentuations were made in the text: Safety instructions that must be observed in order to protect operators and equipment. Special notes that are intended to help you use the program Requests to perform an action are numbered in another typeface. SCREEN TEXTS are set in small capitals. BUTTONS are shown in bold capitals. At the beginning of a chapter you will find a short "guide", which summarizes the contents of the chapter. Additional technical documentation Apart from the instructions you already have, there is detailed technical documentation for all NRI products. 6 GENERAL INFORMATION WinFlash2 & USB Flash Prommer/SimLock General information about WinFlash2 and USB Flash Prommer The PC software WinFlash2 is used to update the firmware in NRI devices (flash), such as e.g. coin changers and validators. Along with the programmer "USB Flash Prommer"/"WinEMP SimLock" the firmware can be updated (flashed) either in the workshop on the PC or on site at the machine using a laptop. The WinFlash2 features one software system for different NRI devices simple installation and fast software updates from the Internet via the NRI homepage ( compatible with new USB Flash Prommer G / WinEMP SimLock G old Flash-Prommer G (only for flashing devices with HC08 microprocessors) old programming adapters G (for G-40.4xxx/E-66/A-66) or G (for G-18.mft/G-40 cctalk/g-40 S1 with 2 x 16 coin channels) (only for flashing devices with HC08 microprocessors) Scope of delivery In addition to the WinFlash2 software (CD-ROM) you are supplied with the following items: USB Flash Prommer G USB connecting cable 12V power pack (500 ma, barrel connector 5.0 x 2.,1 mm) If you already possess one of the programming adapters G or G and the G tester or the Flash-Prommer G , you can use this hardware as well (no longer available). However, these programmers can only update the firmware of devices, which are fitted with a HC08 microprocessor. 6

7 WinFlash2 & USB Flash Prommer/SimLock GENERAL INFORMATION System requirements The WinFlash2 software specifies the following minimum hardware and software requirements: Operating system Windows 98/NT/2000/XP (not CE) Working memory of at least 32 MB Graphic resolution 800 x 600 dpi min./high Color USB or COM interface The use of the WinFlash2 program as well as the explanations in these instructions requires basic knowledge of the Windows operating system on the part of the user 7

8 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS WinFlash2 & USB Flash Prommer/SimLock 2 Safety instructions Before using software and devices for the first time, please read through this manual carefully at least once, and most importantly the safety instructions. This is to ensure you have understood the contents of this manual as well as how to apply software and devices. Proper use The WinFlash2 software as well as the programmer USB Flash Prommer/ WinEMP SimLock are designed to update the firmware in NRI devices (e.g. coin validators, changers, etc.). Only connect the programmer to devices, the firmware to be loaded is intended for. Under no circumstances can the manufacturer be held liable for any damage or loss resulting from improper use of the software/device. The programmers have been constructed in compliance with the state of the art and the recognized safety regulations. Nevertheless this equipment can be a source of danger. Therefore please observe the following safety regulations. Protecting yourself and equipment Only use software and device according to proper use. Under no circumstances can the manufacturer be held liable for any damage or loss resulting from improper use. The programmer PCB is fitted with components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. On account of this, please avoid touching the programmers conntectors. Otherwise there is a risk of electrostatic discharge, which may damage or destroy the programmer. Keep water and other liquids away from the devices. If the device is no longer required, please dispose of it correctly. We reserve the right to make technical modifications to software and device which are not covered by these instructions! 8

9 WinFlash2 & USB Flash Prommer/SimLock INSTALLATION 3 Installation This chapter describes how to: install WinFlash2, connect the device to be flashed, start WinFlash2. Installing WinFlash2 You can download the WinFlash2 software along with the current firmware from the NRI homepage ( using your customer password. If you have not registered yet, please contact our sales staff. To install the program on the hard disk of your PC, please proceed as follows: 1 Open Windows Explorer and start, e.g., the following directory structure: NRI_firmware E _010 (firmware version). 2 Download WinFlash2 and unzip its contents in the directory started beforehand. In addition to the executable "WinFlash2.exe" and the program library (.dll) this directory also contains the firmware (.bin). Before starting the software it is advisable to connect the programmer and the coin validator/changer, the firmware of which is to be updated, to the PC first. 9

The device to be flashed may be connected using the following programmers: USB Flash Prommer G power pack WinEMP SimLock G power pack Programming adapter G tester G for G-40.4xxx and E-66/A-66 fitted with a HC08 microprocessor Programming adapter G tester G for G-18.mft and G-40 cctalk/g-40 S1 with 2 x16 coin channels fitted with a HC08 microprocessor The separate operating instructions "Flash-Prommer G " describe how to store the firmware in the old Flash-Prommer G , in order to be able to flash on site at the machine (only devices with HC08 microprocessors).... using USB Flash Prommer/WinEMP SimLock Connect the device to be flashed to the PC according to one of the following connection plans: Fig. 1a: Connecting coin changers with RJ-45 plug (e.g. E-66/A-66/G-46.F4000) to the PC Fig. 1b: Connecting coin validators and assemblies with flash processors (e.g. G-46 audit module, E-66 Simplex V master module) to the PC 10

11 WinFlash2 & USB Flash Prommer/SimLock INSTALLATION 1 Connect USB Flash Prommer/WinEMP SimLock to the device to be flashed: Coin changers E-66/A-66/G-46.F4000: RJ-45 plug (interface "Changer") to RJ-45 interface on the top right of the coin changer Coin validators and coin changer G : 10-pole connecting cable (interface "ECV") to the coin validator's PCB direct plug 2 Now use the interface labelled "USB PC" and the enclosed connecting cable to connect the USB Flash Prommer/WinEMP SimLock to a USB interface on the PC. 3 Use the 12V power pack and the interface labelled "12 V DC" to power the USB Flash Prommer/WinEMP SimLock.... using programming adapter G /G Connect the device to be flashed (fitted with a HC08 microprocessor) to the PC according to the following connection plan: 1 If necessary, switch off tester G using its mains switch. Fig. 1c: Connecting coin validators/changers or assemblies (audit module, E-66 Simplex V master module) with HC08 microprocessor to PC (using old programmers) 2 Connect tester to the PC using its serial connecting cable. 3 Connect tester to the programming adapter G /G using its 10-pole ribbon cable. If a coin changer is to be connected, the validator has to be separated from the changer now by removing the 40-pole connector on the rear of the validator. 4 Connect programming adapter to the coin validator using its 10-pole ribbon cable. 5 Connect tester to the mains and use the mains switch to switch it on again. The switch is illuminated in green. 11

12 INSTALLATION WinFlash2 & USB Flash Prommer/SimLock Starting WinFlash2 To start WinFlash2: 1 Open Windows Explorer. 2 Select the directory started for installation and double click on WinFlash2.exe. 12

13 WinFlash2 & USB Flash Prommer/SimLock FIRMWARE UPDATE 4 Firmware update If the device to be flashed has been connected correctly and WinFlash2 started, the firmware of the device connected can be updated now: 1 Select firmware (FLASH FILE) by clicking the -button. The dialog box to open files is displayed. 2 Select firmware required for the device connected (here: 330_010.bin for coin changer E-66). 3 Click the button OPEN. WinFlash2 displays the firmware selected and automatically determins the NRI device, the firmware is intended for (behind FOR DEVICE). If the device selected by WinFlash2 is not correct, you can use the -button to select another one. But: Make sure, that the device is the correct one for the firmware selected (the name behind the device name is the name of the microprocessor, e.g. AB32, AZ60). 13

14 INSTALLATION WinFlash2 & USB Flash Prommer/SimLock If you want to flash a G-13.mft, there are additional WinFlash2 functions that can be used: Use the CHECK DEVICE button to check, whether the correct device is connected. In the field SETTINGS you can carry out settings which make WinFlash2 check the current firmware of the connected device before downloading the new firmware: SAME VERSION: WinFlash2 will overwrite also the same firmware version NEWER VERSION: WinFlash2 will overwrite also newer firmware versions 4 Behind CONNECT TO, select the PC interface, the programmer is connected to from the pull-down menu. 5 Make sure, that the correct firmware is selected and the correct device is connected. 6 Click on FLASH. WinFlash2 loads the selected firmware into the device connected. This process can take a few minutes. Only if WinFlash2 indicates "OK" above the STATUS bar, the download has been completed. 7 If necessary, connect further devices of the same series and repeat step 6. For devices of another series you have to repeat steps 1 to 6/7. 14

15 WinFlash2 & USB Flash Prommer/SimLock TECHNICAL DATA 5 Technical data This chapter contains information about all relevant USB Flash Prommer data the CE certification Device data Supply voltage Mark of conformity 12 V DC CE (see next section), RoHS CE certification The CE certificate (CE = Communautés Européennes) confirms that our products comply with specified basic requirements of the applicable directive. The CE certificate is not a quality assurance certificate in terms of the quality expected by the manufacturer but only in terms of the quality demanded legally. It is a pure administrative certificate and is intended only as proof of compliance with the directives for the monitoring authorities and not directed at clients or final customers. Which directives were applied can be seen in the declaration of conformity. The manufacturer must keep this declaration available for the monitoring authorities only (for a minimum period of 10 years after the last product has been introduced to the market). However, upon request we can provide copies of this declaration for our customers. The following directives and their subsequent changes can be partially applied to our devices: 1. The EMC Directive (89/336/EEC) for devices which cause electromagnetic interference or are interfered with by such. 2. The Low Voltage Directive (73/23/EEC) for electrical operating means which are used with a nominal voltage of between 50 and 1000 V AC and V DC. 3. The CE Certificate Labelling Directive (93/68/EEC) Modification directive regarding the application and use of CE labels. 15
