6 1.2 Postures and Pins Postures Standing posture Safe/rest posture Wrong posture Using the Pins Pins inserted Knee and hip joints can move freely. Pins removed Knee and hip joints are locked. 8 2.1 Removing Pepper from Box Secure the flap by inserting it into the slot located on top of the box Keep the box somewhere safe for shipping, returns, repairs, etc When taking Pepper out of the box, make sure you have a firm grip and, ideally, the help of a friend. 11 3.1 Charging Pepper 1 Battery charger plug CLICK! Charging flap 5 Align gear teeth to plug in Pepper. Insert plug then twist until you hear a "click" to engage the charger. Pepper is fully charged. Pepper is charging. 3.5 hr 80% 8 hr 100% Charging time Battery level A fully charged Pepper can last 12 hr - 19 hr depending on the activity. 12 3.2 Unlocking the Stop Button The Stop Button is locked the first time you unbox Pepper. You must unlock the Stop Button to be able to turn Pepper ON. 1 2 Copyright 2017 SoftBank Robotics 12

14 4.1 Turning Pepper ON and OFF Turning Pepper ON To turn Pepper ON, press the button beneath the tablet once. Unlock the Stop Button to be able to turn Pepper ON. Button will pop out when not engaged. POP Soft cover Stop button Press Once Approximately 3 minutes to warm up When turning ON, Pepper makes a sound similar to: Ognak Gnuk. Turning Pepper OFF Approximately 1 minute to shut down When shutting down, Pepper will say: Ognak Gnuk. Press and hold for approximately 3 seconds then release. Stop Button You do not need to open the flap to use the Stop Button. You can push it through the rubber flap. 15 4.2 Operating Pepper Using the Rest Mode To activate Safe/Rest Mode, quickly push the chest button twice. This will stop all activities and turn off all motors. Pepper will not be able to speak or move. To get out of Rest Mode, quickly press the chest button twice again. Press twice Initial posture Rest mode Copyright 2017 SoftBank Robotics 15
16 4.2 Operating Pepper Moving Pepper Around 1 Pepper is switched OFF or in Safe/Rest Mode 2 To release the wheel brakes, open the charging port flap 3 Place one hand on the shoulder to steer and the other on the hip and push Pepper to the new location Copyright 2017 SoftBank Robotics 16
17 4.3 Resetting Pepper Occasionally, Pepper may require a "long start," where everything needs to be reset. For example: when Pepper recommends a restart to clear errors, but the errors persist. If that s the case, follow the steps listed below. Shoulders blink blue Pepper is off. Press for 6 seconds until shoulders turn blue. Startup takes approximately 10 minutes. 18 4.4 Using the Pins When moving or repacking Pepper, insert the pins to loosen the joints. Remove the pins to return Pepper to the default state. Do not insert the pins when Pepper is ON. Pins inserted Knee and hip joints can move freely. Pins removed Knee and hip joints are locked. Pepper's joints will not engage until the pins are removed. 1 2 Store the pins here. 20 5.1 Choosing Pepper's Location The floor should be flat, dry, and bare (no rug or thick carpet), or Pepper could fall. Do not leave Pepper in direct sunlight. Do not place Pepper near any radiator or heat source. Make sure that there is at least 120 cm (approximately 47.2 in) of free space around Pepper. R120cm (47.2in) Pepper is designed for indoor use only. Pepper s operating temperature must be between 5 C/41 F and 35 C/95 F. Pepper s operating humidity range must be between 20% and 80% uncondensed. To avoid a fall, do not put Pepper near steps. Pepper should be placed in a quiet zone for optimal voice recognition performance. There should not be any obstacles within a 2-meter radius (approximately 6.5 ft) in front of Pepper, or the obstacle could be perceived as a human. Copyright 2017 SoftBank Robotics 20

22 6.1 Engagement Zone ZONE 1: When Pepper detects a human in this zone, Pepper will engage the conversation. ZONE 2: When detecting a human in this zone, Pepper will react and make signs to encourage the interaction. Microphone Performance Pepper s listening cone There are four microphones (1, 2, 3, 4) located on the top of Pepper's head. They are directional; Pepper can hear best when looking at you. 24 6.3 Status LEDs Notifications Pepper can also display information through Status LEDs. Blinking White: Pepper is starting up. At startup, the Status LEDs briefly go through Green, Yellow, and Red. Blinking Green: Pepper has something to say. Press the Chest Button once to listen to messages. Blinking Red: Pepper has an error and might be damaged. Press the Chest Button once to listen to messages. Blinking Yellow: Pepper has a warning and might be damaged. Press the Chest Button once to listen to messages. Copyright 2017 SoftBank Robotics 24
25 6.4 Environment Environment Pepper's environment is critical to proper functioning. Observe the following rules: Pepper should be placed in a quiet zone for optimal voice recognition performance. Make sure there is no intense light in Pepper's field of view (this includes spotlights and close proximity to windows) or interaction may be interrupted. Pepper is designed for indoor use only. There should be no obstacles within a range of 2 meters (6 feet) in front of Pepper, as it could be recognized as a human. Copyright 2017 SoftBank Robotics 25

27 7.1 Reading the Serial Number The Serial Number is written on the sticker above the Stop Button. Text & Numbers AP99XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXX It starts with AP99 and is 16 characters long. Copyright 2017 SoftBank Robotics 27
28 7.2 Checking Pepper's Status Check that Pepper reacts when seeing someone and responds. Check that Pepper is still ON. Check that Pepper is clean. Storing Pepper Make sure Pepper is OFF, and that the Stop Button is pushed in (see part 4.1). Make sure Pepper is fully charged (see part 3.1) before storing. 29 7.3 Cleaning Pepper You should clean Pepper at least once a week. Be sure Pepper is powered off before you do. You can use a soft dry cloth or standard waterless or dry cleaning wipes. Do not use water. Do not use alcohol or ammonia-based products. If needed, you can insert the pins to make Pepper more flexible to clean areas that you otherwise wouldn t be able to. However, be aware that the pins will unlock Pepper s joints, causing the robot to move more freely. Copyright 2017 SoftBank Robotics 29

31 8.1 Putting Pepper into Box Pepper should be turned OFF and in the Rest Posture. Push the Stop Button. Fold the flap and insert it into the slit. By doing this, the top flap will stay in place for you to easily remove Pepper. Place one hand on the shoulder to steer and the other on the hip and guide Pepper into the box. 4 Make sure the Charging Flap is closed, then insert the pins. Be careful. When the pins are inserted, Pepper's knee and hip will move freely. 5 6 Make sure the pins are removed before moving Pepper. Copyright 2017 SoftBank Robotics 31
32 8.2 Packing and Placement 7 8 Make sure the charging flap is closed Make sure the hands and head are fully tucked into the box. 34 9.1 Check List 1. Check that Stop Button is unlocked. 1 2 The Stop Button is locked the first time you unbox Pepper. You must unlock the Stop Button to turn Pepper ON. 2. Check that Pepper is charged. Battery charger plug Pepper is fully charged Pepper is charging CLICK! Charging flap 3. Ensure that the problem is not caused by a faulty network connection by checking the other robots, if any. Make sure your local network is operational. 35 9.2 Check List 4. Resetting Pepper. Turn Pepper OFF using the Chest Button. Once Pepper is OFF, press the Chest Button until the Status LEDs turn blue, then release. Shoulders blink blue Pepper is OFF. Press and hold for 6 seconds until shoulders turn blue. Startup takes approximately 10 minutes. If the Problem Persists 1. Turn Pepper OFF using the Chest Button. 2. Press the Stop Button to completely turn the battery OFF. 3. Get the Serial Number. 4.
