Do not use PM1 in high temperature or high humidity areas. 2. Do not store PM1 under direct sun light. 3. Keep PM1 and all its parts and accessories out of the reach of small children. 4. Do not squash the LCD panel with sharp objects. The LCD panel is extremely fragile. 5. Do not attempt to open PM1 or change the battery. Non-expert handling can break internal circuit board. 6. Do not usepm1 while walking on a street or driving a vehicle. Road safety always comes first. 7. Always keep a file backup in order to avoid data lost during file transfer. 1

2 1. General Descriptions: 1.1 Keys, Switches and Connectors: PM1 has 11 keys. Functions of the keys are described below. PWR : (1) to turn the power on and off; (2) to reset the machine P: (1) to play MP4 movie, (2) to play MP3 music, (3) to pause M: to show the pull-down menu ESC: (1) to stop an AP, (2) to return to previous mode, (3) to go back to previous AP OK: (1) to enter an AP, (2) to start playing, (3) to execute a command + / -: (1) to move the cursor up/down, (2) to turn the audio volume up/down, (3) to zoom in/out a picture << / >>: (1) to move cursor left/right, (2) to select the zoom area, (3) fast forward/fast backward R: (1) to start voice recording, (2) to set the starting point and the ending point for A-B repeat Hold: to disable /enable all keys PM1 has 5 connectors. Functions of the connectors are described below. SD/MMC reader: (1) for reading mp3 files or movie files from SD/MMC cards, or (2) for writing recorded video, recorded voice or pictures to SD/MMC cards Earphone/AVout: a phone jack to which (1) a stereo earphone can be plugged into it to get audio output; (2) a 3 in 1 AV extension line is used with to provide 3 RCA connectors, one for video and two for audio AV in: for recording from video devices such as DVD player, TV set, etc; use with a 3 in 1 AV extension line to provide 3 RCA connectors. DC in: for connecting to DC power adaptor USB: for connecting to PC with a USB line 1.2 Charging Battery - Connect the AC input of the DC power adaptor to an AC outlet (Note: The voltage must be between 100V and 240V and frequency can be either 50Hz or 60Hz) - Plug the +5V output of the DC power adaptor into the DC in connector of PM1 - The charging indicator (RED LED) in the front panel will turn on and battery charging begins - Continue to charge the battery until the RED LED turns off Note: For the battery to be fully charged, it is suggested to continue charging the battery for 7 hours (ii.e., about three (3 ) more hours after the RED LED turns off) 1.3a Power On - Press the PWR key (θ) for more than 3 seconds and release it - The GREEN LED on the front panel will turn on - Wait until the main menu page and the yellow-square cursor show up on the screen 1.3b Power Off - Press the PWR key (θ) for more than 3 seconds and release it. - The screen becomes blank and a shutdown message shows up - Wait until both the screen and the GREEN LED turn off Note: Power is forced to turn off automatically by the built-in micro-controller when the battery power is low (i.e., the voltage is below 3.6V). 1.4a Load contents into SD/MMC flash memory card Method 1: SD/MMC Transport - Remove the SD/MMC card from PM1 and insert it into a SD/MMC card reader on PC - Copy contents from HDD to SD/MMC card using Windows file browser - Remove SD/MMC card from PC and insert it back to PM1 and contents are ready for use on PM1 2

3 Load contents to Play contents from SD/MMC on PC SD/MMC on the player Method 2: USB Transfer - Insert SD/MMC card into PM1 - Connect PM1 to a PC using a USB cable and turn the PM1 power on - PM1 becomes a USB device of the PC - Copy contents from HDD to PM1 using Windows file browser - Remove the USB cable and contents are ready for use on PM1 Load contents from PC to PM1 and vice versa with USB 1.4b Upload files to PC Files created on PM1, including picture files created by the DSC application, video files created by the Camcorder application and voice files created by the voice recorder application, may be uploaded to PC using either of the following methods: Method 1: SD/MMC Transport - Remove the SD/MMC card from PM1 and insert it to a card reader on PC - Copy files from the SD/MMC card to PC using the Windows file browser Method 2: USB Transfer - Connect PM1 to a PC using a USB line and turn the PM1 power on - PM1 becomes a USB storage device of the PC - Copy the files from PM1 to PC using the Windows file browser 1.5 Start and Stop an Application - In main menu page, use <</>>/+/- keys to move the cursor (the yellow square) left/right/up/down to the icon of the target AP - Press OK to start the AP - A list of contents file for the AP will show up on the screen - Select a content file using +/- keys and press the OK key to play the content with the AP - While an AP is running, press ESC key to terminate the AP and return to main menu 1.6 Volume Up and Down - While audio is on, press +/- keys to increase/reduce the audio volume 1.7 Commands in the Pull-Down Menu - While an AP is running, press M key to pull-down the menu list - The commands in the menu can be applied to the AP - Press +/- keys to move the menu cursor up/down to the selected command in the menu - Press OK to apply the command Note: A command set for each operation mode of an AP is unique 1.8 File Browsing and Delete Files - When an AP is running, the folder dedicated to the AP is opened first - When a folder is opened, only the files associated with the AP are shown on the screen - Folder in the opened folder may be opened by moving the cursor to the folder and pressing OK 3

4 - Folders in the upper layer of the file tree can be visited by opening the BACK folder recursively. Delete files method 1 - In main menu page, move the cursor to the icon of Delete files application - Press OK to run the file delete manager - Open the folder where the files to be deleted are located - Move the cursor up and down using +/- keys and press OK key to select files - Select Delete selected files and press OK to delete the selected files Delete files - method 2 - While the file list of an application is displayed on the screen, select the file to be deleted - Push M to pull-down the menu list - Select the delete file and press OK to delete the selected file 1.9 Default Folders Content files can be placed in any folder in SD/MMC cards. For better organization of content files, the following default folders are created at the root of each SD/MMC card for respective applications: /movie: used by the MP4 movie player and Camcorder (DV) video recorder /music: used by the MP3 music player /voice: used by the voice recorder /photo: used by the DSC and photo viewer /ebook: used by the ebook text reader Thus, when content files (or folders) are copied from PC to a SD/MMC card, it is better to put them into the respective default folders, i.e., put video files in /movie, mp3 files in /music, picture files in /photo, etc. When an AP is started, content files in the default folder will show on the screen and be ready for use. Default folders on SD/MMC 1.10 System Settings - In the main menu page, move the cursor to the icon of Settings and press OK to show a setting list - Select a setting and press OK to start the setting application 1.11 Installation of PM1 transcoder on PC - PM1 transcoder can be found in PM1 CD ROM, It can be installed on Windows XP/2000 by following the steps guided by the Windows Install-Shield wizards 1.12 MP3 contents - Download mp3 files for mp3 player - MP3 contents are stored as MP3 files which have a file name extension of.mp3 - MP3 files can be created from audio CD using PM1 transcoder - MP3 files can also be downloaded from the web servers of Internet contents providers Note: Consult local Internet Service Providers or Internet Contents Providers for downloading MP3 files 1.13 Video sources and video transcoder - Video files have to be translated into readable format by using the PM1 trans-coder - Video sources are divided into four categories by PM1 transcoder, i.e., HDD video files, VCD, DVD, and TV Express - Use PM1 transcoder to select video sources and specify the tanscoding parameters, then the PM1 4

5 transcoder will translate the selected video source files into readable format and store them in destination files. Multiple video source files can be selected at a time and queued for transcoding one at a time. - The destination video files can be loaded into SD/MMC cards for playing on PM1 Note: Video source files can also be downloaded from Internet; consult local Internet Service Providers or Internet Contents Providers for downloading video files 1.14 Compiling ebooks - PM1 ebook application can read.txt files and.gif files - Files in other formats can be translated into.txt files by using the MS Writer application on PC - The translation can be done by copying the text parts of the original file and pasting them into a.txt file 2. MP4 movie player Play/Pause/Stop - In main menu page, move the cursor to the icon of MP4 movie player and press OK - A list of movie files in the default folder /movie shows up - Browse the folders in upper or lower levels for video files not in the default folder - Select a movie file and press the OK (or P) key to start playing the movie - While playing, press P to pause, press P again to resume normal play, press ESC to stop Forward/Backward - While playing, press >> key to run fast forward at x2, x4, x6, x8, x16 or x 32 speed; press P again to resume normal play - While playing, press << key to run fast backward at x2, x4, x6, x8, x16 or x 32 speed; press P again to resume normal play - While paused, press >> key to advance 30 seconds at a time; press P again to resume normal play - While paused, press << key to backtrack 30 seconds at a time; press P again to resume normal play Move forward at x 32 speed while playing Move backward at x 16 speed while playing Advance about 30 seconds at a time while paused Adjust Voice Volume - While playing, press +/- key to adjust audio volume Adjust Brightness and Contrast - Select Brightness, and press OK to show the brightness indicator, or - Select Contrast, and press OK to show the contrast indicator - Adjust the brightness or contrast up or down by repeatedly pressing >> or << keys Play on TV and switch back to LCD - Connect PM1 to TV from the AVout connector of PM1 using a 3 in 1 AV extension line - Select Switch to TV and press OK to switch the display to TV - To go back to LCD, select Switch to LCD in the pull-down menu and press OK Note: Display is switched back to LCD automatically when the AV extension line is removed 5

6 Hide / Display OSD - Select Hide OSD / Display OSD, and press OK Play All Movies/One Movie in a Folder Repeatedly - Press M to pull-down menu list - Select Repeat all / Repeat one and press OK 3. MP3 music player Play/Pause/Stop - In main menu page, move the cursor to the icon of MP3 music player and press OK - A list of mp3 music files in the default folder /music shows up - Browse the folders in upper or lower levels files not in default folder - Select a mp3 music file and press OK (or P) to start playing the music file - Press P to pause; press P again to resume normal play; press ESC to stop Turn LCD display off/on - Select Display off and press OK to show a list of delay time - Select a setting and press OK - While LCD display is turned off, press any key to turn it on. Forward/Backward - Press >> key to advance 20 seconds forward at a time - Press << key to move 20 seconds backward at a time Volume Up/Down - While playing, press +/- key to adjust audio volume up/down Equalizer - Select EQ to show a list of pre-defined EQ settings, including Classical / Hip-hop / Jazz /R&B / Soul /Turbo Bass / Normal - Select an EQ setting and press OK Set EQ to get better sound effect AB repeat: - While playing, press R key (on the right hand side of PM1) once for A (the starting point of AB repeat); press R key second time for B (the ending point of AB repeat) - While in AB repeat mode, press R key again to return to normal play Play Previous/Next MP3 File in the Folder - While playing, press M key to pull-down the menu list - Select Previous / Next and press OK Repeat All/Repeat One/Shuffle - Select Repeat all / Repeat one / Shuffle and press OK Title/Artist/Album/Lyric Display - The title/artist/album information and lyric (if provided) may be displayed on screen automatically while playing the mp3 file - Character encoding language may be changed if the information is not displayed correctly - Press M to pull-down menu list - Select ID3/Lyric language and press OK 6

Camcorder (DV) Enter Camcorder Mode - In the main menu page, move cursor to the icon of Camcorder and press OK to enter camcorder mode Adjust EV value - In camcorder mode, press << key or >> key to adjust the EV value (a lower EV value for brighter objects, higher EV value for darker objects) Press >>/<< keys to adjust EV value to make video brighter or darker Zoom In/Out - In camcorder mode, press +/- to zoom in/out up to 4 times Adjust Picture Encoding Quality - In camcorder mode, press M to pull-down the menu list - Select Quality and press OK Start/Pause/Stop Video Recoding - In camcorder mode, press P to start recording into a predefined file, named yyyy-mm-date hh-mm-ss - Press P to pause; press P again to resume recording; press ESC to stop View Recorded Video Method 1: - While in Camcorder mode, press M to pull-down the menu list - Select Goto video player and press OK to show a list of movie files in the default folder /movie - Locate the recorded file and press OK to play the recorded file Method 2: - In main menu page, move the cursor to the icon of MP4 movie player, press OK to start the player - Locate the recorded file in the default folder /movie - Press OK to play the recorded file as a movie 5. Digital Camera (DSC) Enter Camera Mode - In main menu page, move cursor to the icon of Digital Camera and press OK to enter camera mode Select Picture Resolution - In camera mode, press M to pull-down the menu list - Select Resolution and press OK to show a list of resolution settings (2048x1536 for 3M pixels, 1280x960 for 1.3M pixels, 640x480 for 300K pixels and 640x480(Burst) for 5 consecutive shots) - Select a resolution setting and press OK 7

8 Set picture resolution with pull-down menu Adjust EV Value - In camera mode, press << key or >> key to adjust the EV value (a lower EV value for brighter objects, higher EV value for darker objects) Taking a Picture - In camera mode, press P to take a picture - Wait for the picture to be processed and stored before taking the next one Note: The picture is stored into the folder /photo with a file name convention dscyyyymmdd_xxxxxx.jpg View the Picture - In camera mode, press M to pull-down the menu list - Select Goto photo viewer and press OK to view the recorded picture in /photo folder or - In main menu page, move cursor to the icon of Photo viewer and press OK - Select the file of the recorded picture and press OK Set Picture Quality - In camera mode, press M to pull-down the menu list - Select Quality and press OK - Select one setting among Best, Fine and Norma and press OK Set Picture Effect ; select Effect and press OK - Select one setting among Normal, Black and White, SEPIA and Color Inverse, and press OK Set White Balance ; select White balance and press OK - Select one setting among Auto, Day light, Cloudy, Fluorescent and Tungsten and press OK Cope with light sources with White Balance menu Set Timer for Delayed Shooting ; select Timer and press OK - Select a timer value and press OK Set Shutter Sound ; select Shutter sound and press OK - Select a shutter sound setting and press OK Burt Mode Consecutive Shots ; select Resolution and press OK - Select 640x480 Burst and press OK 6. Photo Viewer Start Photo Viewer - In the main menu page, move cursor to the icon of Photo Viewer - Press OK to show a list of picture files 8

9 - Browse picture folders in the upper/lower levels for more files - Select a picture file and press OK to show the picture Show Previous/Next Picture - While a picture is displayed, press key to show the next picture - Press + key to show the previous picture Zoom in/out - While a picture is displayed, press OK/<</>> key to enter zoom mode - While in zoom mode, use <</>> key to move zoom area - While in zoom mode, press + key to zoom in - While in zoom mode, press key to zoom out Press OK repeatedly to zoom in Slide Show - Select Auto run and press OK - Press OK to start running slide show Add Annotation - Select Annotation and press OK to start voice recorder - While voice recorder is started, press R to start recording - Press P to pause; press P again to resume recording - Press ESC to stop Show Picture on TV - While connected to TV with an AV extension line, press M to pull-down the menu list - Select Switch to TV and press OK - To go back to LCD, select Switch to LCD in the pull-down menu and press OK Note: Display is switched back to LCD automatically when the AV extension line is removed Show Picture Information - Select the picture file - Select Detail info and press OK to show the information of the picture file 7. FM Radio Start FM Radio - In the main menu page, move the cursor to the icon of FM radio, and press OK - The FM menu page shows up and FM radio starts Scan Forward/Backward - Select Scan forward or Scan backward - Press OK to tune to next available channel Fine Tune to Near-by Channels - Press << key or >> key to move backward or forward 0.1MHz at a time to the near-by channel Tune to Preset Channel - Select Goto preset and press OK to show a table of preset channels - Select a preset channel and press OK to tune to the channel 9

10 Preset Radio Channels - Select Set preset and press OK to show a table of preset channels - Select a table entry and press OK to enter the current channel into the entry Record FM program - While tuning to a channel, press R key to record into a file yyyy-mm-dd hh-mm-ss in /voice folder - Press P to pause; press P again to resume - Press R to stop recording; press ESC to return to FM menu page Set Recording Quality - Select Recorder quality and press OK - Select a setting of recording quality and press OK Turn LCD Display off - Select Display off and press OK to show a list of delay time to turn LCD off - Select a setting and press OK Band Range - Select Band range and press OK - Select a band range and press OK 8. TV Recorder Recording TV Program - Connect AV in of PM1 to TV or other composite video device with a 3 in 1 RCA AV extension line - In the main menu page, move the cursor to the icon of TV Recorder, and press OK - Press +/- key to zoon in/out - Press P to start recording into a file in the /movie folder, named yyyy-mm-dd hh-mm-ss - Press P to pause; press P again to resume recording; press ESC to stop Set Recording Length - Select Recording time setting and press OK to show a list of recording time selections - Select a recording time and press OK Play Recorded Video - Press M to pull down the menu list - Select Goto video player and press OK to show a list of video files in default folder /movie - Select the recorded video file and press OK 9. Voice Recorder Start Voice Recorder 10

11 - In the main menu page, move the cursor to the icon of Voice Recorder, and press OK - (or press R key directly in the main menu page) - Press R key to start recording voice from microphone into a predefined file, named /voice/yyyy-mm-dd hh-mm-ss - Press P to pause; press P again to resume recording; press ESC to stop recording Play Recorded File - In main menu page, move the cursor to the icon of voice recorder, and press OK - Select Voice player and press OK to show a list of recorded voice files - Select a recorded voice file and press OK to play the file Set Recording Quality - Before recording, press M to pull-down the menu list - Select Quality and press OK to show a list of quality choices - Select a recording quality setting and press OK Turn LCD Display off - Select Display off and press OK to show a list of delay time - Select a delay time and press OK 10. Text Reader Open an ebook - In the main menu page, move cursor to the icon of ebook and press OK to show a list of ebook files - Select an ebook file and press OK to open the ebook Go to next/previous page - When an ebook is opened, press +/- key to go to previous/next page - Press <</>> key to go to previous/next file in the folder Fast move to a specific page - When an ebook is opened, press M to pull-down the menu list - Select Fast scroll and press OK to enter the fast move mode - Press +/- key to scroll up/down 10 pages at a time, or - Press <</>> key to scroll up/down one page at a time - Press OK to go back to the reading mode 11. Games Start a game - In the main menu page, move cursor to the icon of Games and press OK to show a list of games - Select a game (Tetris, Othello or Chinese Chess) - Press OK to start the game 11

12 PM1 Video Transcoder 1. Features of PM1 Video Transcoder PM1 video transcoder is a PC application software which can be used to convert video files into PM1 readable format. The converted video files can be loaded to SD/MMC cards directly for playing on PM1. Video source files can be in various formats including mpeg 1, mpeg 2, WMV, Divx 3,4,5, Xvid 3,4,5, rm, etc. It is necessary to have a corresponding codec in Windows Media Player for each of the formats. Some codecs may already exist in Windows Media Player, others have to be installed by the user. Video sourc files can be collected from Internet, recorded from TVprograms, or read directly from VCD or DVD. However, reading from DVD required a DVD rip utility, such as AnyDVD, which maybe illegal o use. The features and software components of PM1 Video Transcoder are illustrated in the following figure.. 13 2. Installation of PM1 Video Transcoder PM1 Video Transcoder is provided in the PM1 Utility CD ROM. It can be installed on a Windows XP/2000-based PC or NB by running the PM1_Transcoder_setup.exe in the CD ROM. Setup Wizards similar to that of installing an ordinary PC application provide an orientation to guide the installation step by step. Major steps of the installation procedure are illustrated below: 2. Starting PM1 Transcoder - After completed the installation, find the PM1 Utility icon on the desk top - Click the icon and the main page of the transcoder (as shown below) will show on the screen VCD in CD Drive Monitor the folders in which a video file will be converted as soon as it is created by TV recorder SW Video files stored in HDD, with one of the following formats: mpeg 1, mpeg2, WMV, DiVX and XVID. Put converted video files into a destination folder; Multiple destination folders can be created The main page of PM1 Video Transcoder has two sections: the source section and the destination section. The source section include a list of buttons, each button represents a class of video sources. The HDD Files are the video source files that have been collected and stored in the HDD of the PC. VCD/CD/DVD are the buttons that enable the transcoder to read video source files directly from the VCD/CD/DVD in the CD drive. The TV Express button enables the transcoder to monitor the 13

14 folders to which the TV recorder software will save the recorded TV program. A recorded TV program will be converted into PM1 readable format as soon as the TV recorded software save it to a monitored folder. The destination section of the main page specifies the destination folder for keeping the converted files. Multiple destination folders can be created for categorizing converted files, but only one is selected at a time. 3. Transcoding video files in HDD Video files in HDD (or removable USB HDD) can be converted into PM1 readable format by the transcoder through the procedures illustrated below: - In the main page, click the HDD Files button to pop out the Windows file browser - Select the video source file to be converted and close the windows file browser, then a Transcoding Options menu page show up - Set the conversion parameters for the selected video source file, including video quality, audio quality, frame rate and the maximum file size - The destination folder can also be re-assigned by clicking the Browse button and browsing with the Windows file browser. - Close the Transcoding Options menu page by clicking the OK button in the page, the the video source file will be queued automatically at the Transcoding Job Queue for conversion - Status of transcoding can be examined by opening the Queue page of the transcoder. - A log of transcoding history is maintained in the Log page 1. Select a video file in the HDD to be converted 14

Set the conversion parameters for the selected video file, including video quality, audio quality, frame rate and file size 4. The destination folder can also be re-assigned 4. Set up monitored folder for TV Express - Click TV Express button to show the TV express menu page - Create a monitored folder by clicking the NEW button - Set conversion parameters when the Transcoding Options menu page shows up - Press OK to create an item in the list of monitored folders - Select the folders to be enabled and press the Enable button 1. Create monitored folders for TV Express 2. Set the conversion parameters for the monitored folder, including video quality, audio quality, frame rate and file size 15

16 5. Transcoding video files Step 1: Select VCD as the video source Step 2: Select the folder for placing converted video file. Step 3: Press OK to complete the selection - Click the VCD button and a file list on the VCD shows up - Select the files to be converted and press OK - The selected files will be queued automatically at the Transcoding Job Queue for conversion Note: The status of the queue can be examined by opening the Queue page and the Log page. 16
