Instructions for Talking Up/Down Timer LIV Getting to know your timer: The timer has several functions: count-down timer with voice report; count-up timer without voice report; and talking clock. You select a function by sliding up or down the small switch that is two-thirds of the way down on the right side of the unit when the unit is facing you with the liquid crystal display LCD at the top and towards you. The setting of any function is done with two rows of buttons below the display: the main function switch on the right side of the case, and 3 switches that are normally hidden under a sliding cover at the bottom of the timer s front side. The back of the timer has a dual-function mounting clip. It can be used flat and attached to a fridge door or other steel surface by its built-in magnet. The clip can also be hinged out to act as a strut so that the timer can stand on a horizontal surface. The clip also covers the battery cover. The timer uses two AG13 batteries. The timer is shipped with a security tab over the batteries. The unit will not work until the tab is removed. Removing the security tab: Turn the unit over so that the mounting clip faces you and with its hinged end at the top. With the thumb of one hand, press down and hold the textured, hinged top of the clip. Keeping pressure on the hinged end so that the opposite end of the clip is raised fully, feel underneath the clip with the index finger of the other hand. You will find a small cover with a spring wire in it and with an arrow pointed downwards and a texture grip area. Put your finger tip on the small textured area and slide the cover towards you approximately one half inch or 12mm. The cover will slide out and come free; retain it securely. The plastic security tab is approximately 1 ¼ inches long by ¼ inch wide, or 28mm by 5mm. One end is trapped under the uppermost battery. Pull the tab gently and it should come free. The unit will beep to show it is now powered up.
If the battery comes out while you are removing the tab, or if you let the clip go and a battery sticks to the underside of the magnetic arm, kindly refer for instructions in the next section on Battery replacement. When everything is accomplished, replace the battery compartment cover by holding the hinged end of the clip down so the other end is up. Take the cover with the textured area at the top and with the arrow pointing down. Place the cover in the centre of the large recess it came from and gently slide it forward with some downwards pressure on the leading, textured area; it should slide home easily. If it does not, check that the batteries are inserted properly and are flat, and that you are putting some downward pressure on the cover as it slides home. Battery replacement: Refer to the section above, Removing the security tab, for the method to access the battery compartment. The batteries may fall out if you turn the unit over, or you may have to pry them out carefully with a nail-file or similar tool. Discard the batteries according to your jurisdiction s regulations and replace them with two quality AG13 batteries. The batteries are both inserted with the slightly domed (negative) end down and with the positive (flat) end up. Replace the battery cover using the method described in the preceding section titled, Removing the security tab. Setting the unit: Turning the talking function OFF/ON: The timer is usually shipped in its talking mode. To disable this function, slide down the lower section of the front of the timer. Hinge the lower section under the end of the casing. There are two horizontal buttons on the right hand side. Press the left hand button (labeled Voice On/Off). The unit will beep once to signal this feature is deactivated and a small icon will appear at the top of the display, showing a speaker with the letter X across it. Pressing the left hand button again will cause the timer to beep twice, signaling that voice output is operative and the icon will disappear.
Clock setting: Move downwards, to the end of its travel, the small sliding switch which is two-thirds of the way down the right-side edge of the case when the front of the timer is towards you and the display is at the top. The unit will not make a sound but the word SET will flash in the display. Place a finger on the top row of horizontal buttons on the front of the clock. Find the left-hand button (labeled Hr) and press it once. The unit will announce the hours of its current setting in AM and PM format. Press the left-hand button as many times as needed to produce the required hours value. Move over to the middle button (labeled Min) and press this button until you have advanced to the required minutes value. Slide the setting button upwards about 1/8 of an inch or 4mm until you feel resistance. The timer s clock is now set and you have left setting mode. Checking the current actual time: When the timer is in clock mode, pressing any button on the unit will produce a voice announcement of the actual time. The clock enters Clock mode when the sliding switch on the right-side of the case is in the appropriate position: slide the switch all the way down as far as it will go, then slide it upwards by 1/8 inch or 4 mm until you feel resistance; the timer is now in Clock mode. Timer setting counting down with voice announcements: Move upwards, to the end of its travel, the small sliding switch which is two-thirds of the way down the right-side edge of the case when the front of the timer is towards you and the display is at the top. Now slide the switch downwards about 1/8 of an inch or 4mm until you feel resistance. You are now in count-down timing mode. The unit will not make a sound but a vibration icon and the words COUNT DOWN will show at the top of the timer s display. Place a finger on the top row of horizontal buttons on the front of the clock. If you want the time duration to be at least one hour long then find the left-hand button (labeled Hr) and press it once for each
hour required. The unit will announce the hours as they accumulate. Press the left-hand button as many times as needed to produce the required hours duration. If you want the delay to be at least one minute, then move over to the middle button (labeled Min) and press this button repeatedly until you have advanced to the required minutes value. Finally, move over to the right-hand button, which is the seconds button, and press it repeatedly if it is required to have such a fine level of timing. You will hear the seconds accumulate until you stop when you have accumulated the required number of seconds delay. You can now either exit timer mode and the timer will remember the most recent value you have selected, or you may activate the timer. To exit setting mode for now, move the sliding switch downwards about 1/8 of an inch or 4mm until you feel resistance. The timer s down timing is now set and you have left setting mode. Starting the count-down talking timer: To activate the set count-down delay at any time, make sure the sliding switch is in the required position: move upwards, to the end of its travel, the small sliding switch then slide the switch downwards about 1/8 of an inch or 4mm until you feel resistance; you are now ready to activate the alarm. Move a finger to the lower row of horizontal buttons and find the button on the right (labeled Start/Stop); press this button once to start the count; the unit will beep to confirm your action. Pressing this button again at any time will stop the count and the unit will again beep. Press the same button again to re-start the count at its current value. This feature is useful if you wish to pause the count for any reason. End-point warning: The timer will also warn you as it approaches the end of the selected count-down time, depending on how long the time selected is. If the delay period is greater than one hour it will give an hourly announcement of how long is left. From 10 minutes to one hour the timer will warn you every 10 minutes. From 1 minute to 10 minutes you will be warned every minute. When the remaining interval is less than 1 minute, you will hear an announcement every 10 seconds, with a warning each second for the final 10 seconds.
Clearing the timer before the timed period ends: To clear the count-down at any time, first stop the count by pressing the Start/Stop button once and pressing the left-hand button of the lower row of buttons. The timer will reset the count to zero and give one beep. Selecting sounds: There are 6 sounds you can select from to signal when the countdown is finished. First, set the sliding switch on the right side of the case to Count Down by moving it upwards, to the end of its travel, and then slide the switch downwards about 1/8 of an inch or 4mm until you feel resistance; you are now ready to select a sound. Now slide down the lower section of the front of the timer. Hinge the lower section under the end of the casing. There are two buttons together on the right hand side. Press the right-hand button repeatedly until you find the sound you want; they are, in order: a machine sound, a cuckoo, a fire bell, a spring, a car horn, and three electronic beeps. The selected sound will be heard for 60 seconds when the count-down reaches zero, and can be silenced by pressing any of the two rows of horizontal buttons on the front of the timer. Setting the memory: You can place into memory one count-down period for added convenience. First, place the timer in Count Down setting mode by sliding the switch on the right side of the case to the required position, as described above. While in this mode, enter the value you wish kept in memory by pressing the Hours, Minutes and Seconds buttons as necessary. When that is done, simply press the middle button (labeled Memory ) of the lower row of buttons on the front of the timer. The timer will beep to tell you the required value has been entered in the memory and the word, MEMORY will appear on the right side of the display. You can access this stored value at any time the timer is not counting down by entering the count-down timer setting function, as described above, and pressing the memory button once more.
Clearing the memory: Clear the memory when required by entering the setting mode again and pressing the Memory button once. This button is in the middle of the lower row of buttons. The timer will beep once and the word, MEMORY will flash in the display. Press the Clear button, which is immediately to the left of the memory button, and the memory will be erased and the word, MEMORY will disappear from the display. Selecting constantly repeating count-down timing: The timer can automatically reset itself after the end of a timed event and start timing again until it is reset by you. The unit is shipped with this repeat timing function turned off. To make this function active, slide down the lower section of the front of the timer. Hinge the lower section under the end of the casing. There is a horizontal sliding switch on the left hand side labeled Repeat: Yes/No. The switch should be set to its right in the No position. Sliding it to the left towards the Yes position, will make the repeated timing function operate. You should then press the Start/Stop button to activate the count-down timer. Timer setting counting up without voice announcements: Locate the small sliding switch which is two-thirds of the way down the right-side edge of the case when the front of the timer is towards you and the display is at the top. Now slide the switch upwards as far as it will go. The unit will not make a sound but the words, COUNT UP will show at the top of the display. Move a finger down to the lower row of buttons on the front of the timer and locate the righthand button, labeled, Start/Stop). Press it once and the unit will beep once and begin to accumulate time. The maximum count-up time accumulation is 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds. You can press the Start/Stop button at any time to pause the count if required. You can clear the count at any time by pressing the Start/Stop key once, which will cause one beep, and then pressing the left-hand button (labeled Clear) of the lower row of buttons.
Operational modes: Your timer can operate in both time-counting modes at the same time as well as in clock mode: simply set each timing mode you wish to operate by pressing the Start/Stop button while you are in each setting mode, and then return the mode to the clock setting position by sliding the switch on the right hand side of the case to the Clock position, as described above in the Clock setting section of these instructions. Any Problems? The timer s sound volume will decrease and the display may become inoperative if the batteries needs replacement. If changing the batteries does not work then call for advice or to report a defective product. If the product has to be returned it should be sent to: Shop CNIB - Repairs 1929 Bayview Avenue Toronto, ON M4G 3E8.
