Make Sure the Network Is Ready Before you begin installing the PictureTel 90 or PictureTel 960 system, you should make sure that the network is ready. The document Preparing Your Network for Collaboration contains worksheets that will help you get the network ready. For example, for ISDN networks, the worksheets list the ISDN BRI dialect, the Network Number Type, and so on. You can find a copy of the Preparing Your Network for Collaboration document at the PictureTel documentation web site, You or your network administrator should follow the procedures in this document to prepare the network. To connect to a LAN, you must have a LAN cable. If you don t have a LAN cable, contact your system administrator.

o A Set Up the ISDN Cables Depending on the type of network cables you ordered, your system may have come with WAN cables, such as ISDN, V.35, or RS-9 cables. If you have the four ISDN network cables, here s how to connect them: ISDN VGA VCR A/V WAN LAN NT- Boxes: In the United States and Canada, most ISDN lines that come directly from an ISDN service provider are U interface ISDN. Your system, however, supports S/T interface ISDN. An NT- box converts U interface ISDN to S/T interface ISDN. If you need to use an NT- box, plug the ISDN cables into the NT- box, and then plug the NT- box into the wall jack. See the instructions that came with the NT- box for more details.

o A ISDN Set Up the V.35 or RS-9 Cables If you have V.35 or RS-9 network cables, you have to connect those cables from the computer box to an IMUX. Contact your IMUX supplier to make sure you have the proper cables. Also, see the documentation that came with the IMUX for complete information about setting up the network cables with an IMUX. This illustration shows the typical cabling for V.35 to an IMUX: VGA VCR A/V WAN LAN

Set Up Your Room Now that you ve set up all the hardware, you ll want to make sure you get the best performance from the system by optimizing the room setup. Here are some tips: Lighting: Lighting is important for producing the best video image. If possible, equip the room with indirect fluorescent lighting. Indirect lighting minimizes shadows, and fluorescent lighting provides the truest skin tones on the screen. Also, if there are windows in the room, add curtains, drapes, or blinds, and close them. Daylight is a variable light source and can conflict with the interior room lighting. Reflections: Consider where the whiteboard and any other shiny surfaces are located. Glare can make the video image difficult to see. In addition, avoid using chrome or other shiny furniture. Sound: If possible, use sound-absorbent material (such as carpeting and upholstered furniture) in the room to reduce echoes. Microphone and speaker placement: For optimal performance, place the speakers and microphone at least two feet (60 centimeters) apart, and place the microphone on the conference room table. If more than four people will usually be using the system for meetings, consider adding another microphone. Also, try to locate the microphone away from sources of noise, such as computer- or monitor-cooling fans. 30

Go...

Turn the System On. Now that you ve set up the hardware, you re ready to start up the system:push the power button on. The power button is located on the front of the computer box.. Use the keyboard to select a language from the list that appears on the screen. 3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. When you re done following the instructions, you re ready to use the system to make a call. Or, you or the system administrator can access AdminTools to fine-tune the system (from the Start menu choose Programs>PictureTel ipower>administrator Information>AdminTools).
