IBM i Backup Why do you back up? What should you be backing up? When and how often should you be backing up? Do you have a backup strategy? Do you have a recovery plan? Do you have DOCUMENTED backup and recovery plans? Are you testing your plan? How much can you afford to invest in a backup/recovery plan? How much time can you afford to be down? Is your system too important to back up?
IBM i Backup Designing a backup and recovery strategy is like a puzzle Design your backup strategy based on the size of your backup window Backup strategy also needs to meet your recovery strategy TEST your backup and recovery strategy! Your business may depend on your ability to recover your system!
IBM i Backup Three basic backup strategies Simple: Large backup window available daily with no system activity Medium: Medium backup window available daily with no system activity Complex: Short backup window, with little or no time of system inactivity
IBM i Backup Simple: Large backup window available daily with no system activity Use GO SAVE menu Use GO SAVE Option 21 daily (simplest) Use GO SAVE Option 21 weekly and Option 23 daily
IBM i Backup Medium: Medium backup window available daily with no system activity Save Changed Objects SAVCHGOBJ, SAVDLO, SAV Journaling objects and saving the journal receivers Detach and save the journal receivers regularly Saving groups of user libraries, folders, or directories
IBM i Backup Complex: Short backup window, with little or no time of system inactivity Save system information in a non-restrictive state Save data concurrently using multiple tape devices Save data in parallel using multiple tape devices Use the save-while-active process
IBM i Backup Save system in a non-restrictive state Use SAVSYSINF command to perform a cumulative save of a subset of system data NOT a replacement of the SAVSYS command Used after a base SAVSYS is performed Not to be used for system upgrades or migrations Does not require restricted state Saves system objects such as job descriptions, job queues, subsystem descriptions, and changed commands, system reply lists, service attributes, environment variables, system values required for system recovery, and network attributes Saves operating system PTFs that are copied into *SERVICE. Use the Change Service Attributes (CHGSRVA) command to modify your service attributes to automatically copy the PTF save files to *SERVICE when loading PTFs. For system recovery, the Licensed Internal Code (LIC) and operating system will be recovered from your SAVSYS media. Then use your SAVSYSINF media and the Restore System Information (RSTSYSINF) command to restore the saved changes to system objects and PTFs (since the last SAVSYS).
IBM i Backup Save data concurrently using multiple tape devices Reduce backup time by performing save operations on more than one tape device at a time Save libraries to one tape device, folders to another, directories to a third Save different sets of libraries, objects, folders, or directories to different tape devices Using BRMS you can run multiple backup control groups concurrently to different tape devices
IBM i Backup Save data in parallel using multiple tape devices Parallel save is intended for very large objects, libraries, or directories. Parallel saves Spread the data in the object, library, or directory across multiple tape devices. Implemented with BRMS
IBM i Backup Use the save-while-active process Simplest method to use the SWA feature is to prevent user access to applications and data until the SWA checkpoint is reached. The time to reach the SWA checkpoint is dependent on the number of objects, not the size of the objects being checkpointed Users can resume activity after the save processing reaches a synchronization checkpoint. Starting with IBM i 6.1, the SWA function offers a single save-whileactive checkpoint for multiple saves. The Start Save Synchronization (STRSAVSYNC) command ensures a single, consistent checkpoint for your library and IFS saves or even a single, consistent checkpoint for multiple concurrent library saves.
IBM i Backup Encrypting your backups BRMS supports (software) backup encryption starting with V6R1 Requires Advanced feature of BRMS Requires Encrypted Backup Enablement feature 44 of IBM OS Cannot encrypt the operating system (*SAVSYS, *SAVSYSINIF, *SAVSECDTA, and *SAVCFG) Cannot encrypt any libraries that start with Q Substantial impact on performance, expect saves to take twice as long. Hardware Encryption is an alternative Available as an option for IBM SAS or fiber attached LTO4/LTO5/LTO6 or TS1120/TS1130 tape drives that reside in a library IBM Security Key Lifecycle Manager (SKLM) server is required Formerly TKLM Disaster recovery requires a running SKLM server Be sure to run SKLM on a server or LPAR whose saves are not encrypted
IBM i Backup Recovery for Physical and Logical Files Physical files need to be restored before logical files when they are in different libraries If you are not careful in setting up where the logical files are kept, a second restore may be required to get the logical files restored Starting with IBM i OS V6R1, no additional steps are required to restore the missed logical files when: Using the RESTORE Menu options 21, 22 or 23 Using RSTLIB command with *NONSYS, *IBM, os *ALLUSR Using BRMS to recover your system
IBM i Backup There are many ways to back up your system and your data. What's important is that you actually choose one and use it.

Virtual Tape
IBM i Backup IBM i Hosted Virtual Tape Drives Advantages May be faster than saving to physical tapes Similar performance as save files Best performance using a separate ASP Eliminates save file restrictions One library per save file SAVSYS not supported on save file Parallel saves not supported on save file One TB size limit on save file Eliminates tape/media error limitations Saves will not end due to tape device or media errors Once save-while-active checkpoint is reached, can t restart due to tape device or media errors Duplication to physical media at your convenience On site and off site storage Keep virtual volumes on system as needed Keep duplicated volumes on site
IBM i Backup IBM i Hosted Virtual Tape Drives 256 maximum per image catalog One or more image catalogs to hold virtual tapes (image catalog entries) Used just as you use physical media
IBM i Backup IBM i Hosted Virtual Tape Drives Considerations Probably no performance improvement over LTO3 tape technology Requires substantial disk space Disaster recovery restrictions No install from SAVSYS virtual media The required D-IPL can be done only from physical media Data compaction not supported Data compress is supported but Very low compression Significant impact on performance
Virtual Tape Alternatives IBM i Integrated Virtual Tape ProtecTIER V5R4 onwards Part of Operating System Good performance with enough disk arms No turnkey remote replication V5R4 onwards External Virtual Tape TS7620, TS7650 Good performance with appropriate disk Strong remote replication

Where does it Fit Generally and on IBM i Small Servers can t optimize a tape drive Small Backups don t fill a tape Writing Waiting Waiting Waiting Virtual tape can provide multiple virtual drives Less Important for IBM i Virtual tape can make virtual volumes of any size Nice with VIOS for IBM i Tapes are Hard to Manage Offsite Shipments are Costly and a Bother Virtual tape keeps all the volumes inside the device Good for IBM i Very Interesting for IBM i Customers Virtual tape can transmit them to a remote site
ProtecTIER on IBM i Where does it fit? ProtecTIER IP Replication For customers who are moving their tapes offsite via truck today and would like a safer, more automated solution and quicker access to media for recoveries Tired of Handling Tapes? IBM i ProtecTIER ProtecTIER IBM i Note: If the customer already has an HA/DR solution that replicates his data to his remote site, then that may provide an alternate solution for remote tape: IBM i Software-based Replication (eg icluster, MIMIX, Visions, itera, etc) External Disk Copy Services IBM i Geographic Mirroring (formerly Cross Site Mirroring or XSM) Tiny LPARs For customers where a tape cartridge is much bigger than needed... VIOS / NPIV ProtecTIER
Virtual Tape on IBM i Important Points Overall Speed and Single Stream Speed Backup Scheduling Virtual Tape Devices shine when they can run a large number of mediumspeed backup streams. IBM i customers sometimes need a small number of very fast streams.
