1 Module Specification 1. Factual information Module title M275 Web Development using PHP and Level 2 MySQL Module tutor Credit value 10 Module type New course Notional learning hours 2. Rationale for the module and its links with other modules This course complements the level three M359 course. It provides practical introduction to developing web applications using open-source technologies. PHP and MySQL are widely used open-source technologies that are ideal for quickly developing database-driven Web applications. This module covers the basics of the PHP language, how to set up and work with a MySQL database, and then how to use PHP to interact with the database and the server. This module equips the student with practical industry relevant experience using open-source software development tools and languages. 3. Aims of the module The aim of this module to provide our students with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop dynamic web applications using open source software tools such as PHP and MySQL on an Apache server. Students will be able to write server-side scripts in the PHP language, process user data submitted from Web forms, design and create databases for various kinds of Web applications and design and implement 3-tier Web apps using PHP and MySQL. Upon completion of this module the students integrate and implement the PHP scripting language and the MySQL database system to develop secure, dynamic websites and master the web technologies necessary to develop a complete e-commerce solution 4. Pre-requisite modules or specified entry requirements Normally, students are expected to have completed study of their level 1 M105 before they can undertake the T275 module.
