Rationale for the module and its links with other modules T390 Computer networks and computer security is a ten point third level course which builds on a topdown approach of Computer Networking that emphasises on application-layer paradigms and application programming interfaces, encouraging a hands-on experience with protocols and networking concepts. Transport layer design issues, protocols as well as congestion control mechanisms are presented. Issues such as network security will also be covered. Networking today involves much more than standards specifying message formats and protocol behaviours and it is far more interesting. 3. Aims of the module The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the fundamental concepts and theory of communications, and provide them with a solid understanding of the technology that supports modern networked computer systems, the low-level network programming, the ability to evaluate and advise industry on the use and deployment of networked systems and maintain their security. 4.
