2 What is the SIP Creator? Submission Information Package SIP The SIP Creator is a tool for analyzing metadata. It analyses an XML file and creates a mapping file. Then, it demonstrates the mapping and can perform the transformation of the metadata with validation. The SIP Creator is used by the Ingestion Team and is intended to be deployed for all Aggregators and Providers with a few additions (public domain calculator, Rights calculator, visualization aspect).
3 How does the SIP Creator work? The SIP Creator is (at present) a web start standalone tool that runs with the Java Virtual Machine. Java 6.0 is required. The SIP Creator works with XML files containing metadata records. The SIP Creator tool creates new files while working with the original XML (the original XML remains unchanged). Created files: Statistics file (For analysis within SIP tool) Mapping file (Groovy language script) Normalized file (Validated, normalized data) Report file (Actual # of records normalized) Discarded file (details of records with validation errors)
4 Why was the SIP Creator developed? BACKGROUND The SIP Creator was created to streamline our analysis, mapping, profile and normalization processes and reduce the amount of steps and manual repetition necessary. The SIP Creator is intended to have additional functionality that can replace or complement the Content Checker. The SIP Creator was also developed with the idea that Providers could use it to create a mapping file from their original metadata format to ESE+ without requiring actual changes to their original format, creating a choice in workflows.
5 Why was the SIP Creator developed? A NEW WORKFLOW IDEA? Providers use the SIP Creator to create a mapping file from their original format to ESE+. Providers send their mapping file to Europeana and alert the Ingestion team when they have metadata records ready to harvest. Europeana harvests the records in the original format. The Europeana ingestion team uses the provided mapping file to transform the harvested metadata to ESE+. If the Provider does not make or send a mapping file, the Europeana Ingestion team uses the SIP Creator internally to map the original format into ESE+. Providers have the choice to deliver ESE+ or another format.
6 Where is the SIP Creator? The Sip Creator currently resides at Europeana labs where it is under steady development. All changes to the code and backend development will be deployed each time it is launched on a desktop.
