3 1 Product concept The AMBUS product series from AQUAMETRO offers both established as well as innovative products for M-Bus system technology. AMBUS devices enable M-Bus systems to operate efficiently while, depending on the particular version, providing the following functions: Features Communication power supply for devices via the 2-wire M-Bus connection Additional power supply via a 2-wire pair operating as a 4-wire system (15 V AC ) Level converter between M-Bus and RS-232 or RS-485 interface (e.g. of a PC) M-Bus repeater function for cascading several M-Bus subnetworks M-Bus central device with integrated Web server Up to 250 M-Bus meters can be connected 5.7 LCD touchscreen with text display and multilingual text display Data logger with optional plug-in memory 10 MB Ethernet interface via RJ-45 Optional integrated telephone modems (PSTN, ISDN, GSM) via RJ-45 / antenna RS-232 and RS-485 interface Relay contacts for troubleshooting and communication control Protocols: TCP/IP, ARP, ICMP, HTTP, HTML, PPP, LCP, IPCP, PAP, SOAP / XML, WSDL 1.1 AMBUS ZS AMBUS ZS instruments have a communication power supply and a power supply for all end devices required. These versions require no local memory, display, operation unit or network connection since communication is carried out exclusively via a PC with a suitable M-Bus reading program. An installation manual and operating instructions for the AMBUS ZS 5 is available (Art. No ). (AMBUS ZS central devices can operate up to 250 units (see the M-Bus network diagram below). M-Bus networks with more than 250 units or distributed M-Bus networks can be set up using subnetworks each with a central device and which are connected to a repeater linked to the master central device. Simplified M-Bus network: Maximum 250 M-Bus units (LE = load element or unit) Extended M-Bus network: Example: 1 x AMBUS ZS as Master. 2 x AMBUS ZS as Slaves. Always connect the slave central devices to the master central device (slave centrals can not be connected to slave centrals). Operating instructions AMBUS ZS / AMBUS Net 3
4 AMBUS ZS units consist of two function blocks: The low-voltage power supply and a bi-directional M-Bus converter with 3 communication channels: RS 232, RS 485 and the M-Bus repeater. The M-Bus changes the RS 232 or RS 485 signals into M-Bus signals. The converter functions as a power driver when using the M-Bus repeater. The communication channels work in parallel. If there is communication via one channel then the other channels must remain inactive. (Further information is found in the technical documentation: AMBUS ZS / Modem) To prevent communication conflicts, the central device has an acknowledgement contact (RS 232 busy relay). This closes as soon as the RS-232 interface receives a signal. It remains closed during communication and only opens after a waiting time of typically 20 seconds once communication has ended. The RS232/485 channels (used together only) and the M-Bus repeater can be activated or deactivated by moving a jumper (see diagram on next page). Simplified and extended network Blocked Jumper position Mobile meter data recording: Central device functions as MASTER Communication: RS-232 no J7 J (Factory set) Automated meter data recording: Central device functions as MASTER Communication: RS-232 or RS-485 Mobile and automated meter data recording: Central device functions as MASTER Communication: RS-232 combined with RS-485 no no J7 J (Factory set) J7 J (Factory set) Extended network Blocked Jumper position Meter data recording via MASTER central device: The central device functions as SLAVE Communication: M-Bus repeater. RS-232 RS-485 of SLAVE central device J J9 2 3 The low-voltage power supply can be connected to M-Bus measuring units which normally require an external power supply. This power supply is protected from short-circuiting. With overloads or short-circuiting the safety device is activated and limits the output current to just a few ma. Resetting the safety device is done by briefly interrupting the AMBUS ZS power supply. 1.2 AMBUS Net AMBUS Net is used as an integrated extension of the AMBUS ZS for the creating, handling and maintaining M-Bus devices as a complete system with state-of-the-art and customer-friendly operation. The powerful ¼-VGA touchscreen display enables convenient and rugged on-site operation without the need of a PC! The device can also be remotely operated either via a direct telephone link (analog, ISDN and GSM) or via Intranet / Internet due to its World Wide Web server program. It can be remote controlled using any Web browser supporting Java and generates the same interface as with on-site operation or allows direct downloading of protocol files (optional). Existing plants can be easily updated or expanded. AMBUS Net is compatible with AMBUS FA systems and can be updated to become the AMBUS ZS central M-Bus device. Operating instructions AMBUS ZS / AMBUS Net 4
5 AMBUS Net central devices can control up to 250 units. If M-Bus networks with more than 250 units are operated or M-Bus distributed networks used, then these are linked into the Ethernet side of the network. Ask your network supervisor for the network settings required. Ethernet network: Example: 2 x AMBUS Net as M-Bus Master. A maximum of 250 M-Bus units for each AMBUS Net Subordinate Slave central devices (ZS) possible. 2 Components 2.1 Housing and power supply AMBUS ZS and AMBUS Net have rugged, red-lacquered pressure die-cast aluminium housings and are suitable for mounting on the wall or in a control cabinet. The power supply is exclusively a 230 VAC / 50 Hz mains voltage. An LED indicates stand-by after the instrument is switched on. 2.2 Versions AMBUS ZS is available in the following versions: Designation Number of M-Bus units RS-232 RS-485 M-Bus repeater AMBUS ZS-5 **) 5 / 20 *) AMBUS ZS *) AMBUS ZS *) AMBUS Net is available in the following versions: Designation Number of M-Bus units LCD Internet server Ethernet RJ-45 Telepho ne modem Data logger with CF board RS-232 & RS-485 AMBUS Net LCD Option Option AMBUS Net LCD Option Option AMBUS Net Option Option AMBUS Net Option Option Art. 12 4.3 Mounting in the control cabinet Mount the lower section of the housing onto the mounting rails inside the control cabinet using sliding nuts or similar. 5 Electrical connections Details for designing an M-Bus system are given in the M-Bus design file (VI ). 5.1 General information Installing the M-Bus network is carried out using 4-core, unscreened cable. High-voltage and bus cables must be laid separately. Always dimension cables with a sufficient cross-sectional area and if necessary distribute them over the 3 terminal groups! The topology of the net, the number of M Bus devices connected and also the local positioning of the units determine the cross-sectional area of this cable. 5.2 Notes on network topology The maximum current and the theoretical voltage drop in the cabling has to be taken into consideration when determining the topology and the type of cable to use. The voltage drop between the central device and end node should not be greater than 5 V AC. Too large a voltage drop can be reduced by the following: Divide the main cable trunk into subtrunks, (where the greatest currents flow). Increase the cable cross-sectional area. Construct a star-shaped network instead of a serial network, (never ring-shaped). 5.3 AQUAMETRO M-Bus installation accessories: AQUAMETRO offers a range of M-Bus accessories, to simplify installation.
