2 LOCAL GAMING: HOW DID WE GET HERE? 50 years ago: streaming with mainframes and terminals Personal computers: now you can put a computer in your home! We can use these for more than just work: gaming becomes booming business No (fast) internet yet Go to the store, buy the game and install it on your own computer

3 STREAMING GAMING: CHEAPER AND BETTER? Spend anywhere from 400 to 1500 on a gaming system only to leave it sitting there and doing nothing most of the time You need to be where your gaming system is Mainframes aren t used much anymore, but what about the Internet? 1 graphics card = many gamers

4 HOW DO WE DO IT? YouTube works great, why would streaming gaming be any different? It s not that easy The timing needs to be right The quality needs to be high It needs to work at consumer Internet speeds Is it possible with existing software?

5 SOFTWARE Traditional remote desktop software is not optimised for 3D applications and in many cases cannot run 3D apps at all Luckily, some vendors have started to implement basic 3D support Microsoft, Citrix, open source community NVIDIA, AMD Disappointing: low quality Made for enterprise (CAD etc.) and not gaming Can we (mis)use it for gaming? Tested in my extended paper: Proprietary: RemoteFX vgpu (Microsoft, RDP) TeamViewer HDX 3D Pro (Citrix) Open source: TurboVNC (+ VirtualGL) X2go (+ VirtualGL) x11vnc Server Windows(/Linux) DirectX/ OpenGL game GPU AUDIO VIDEO INPUT Server software Protocol Client Windows/OS X/Linux/Android/iOS/Web/etc. Client software Display Speakers Keyboard Mouse

6 TESTING Goal: 1080p/4K at 60 fps without noticeable lag Streaming server Streaming client GPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 GPU NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU (not used for gaming) CPU Quad-Core Intel Core i GHz Dual-Core Intel Core 2 Duo P GHz RAM 8 GB RAM 4 GB RAM OS Multiple (depending on streaming software used) Windows 8.1 Enterprise Games: Battlefield 4 (recent FPS) Team Fortress 2 (older FPS, also runs on Linux) Need For Speed World (older racing game) Other software: Beepa Fraps (measuring frame rate) NetLimiter and clumsy (simulating real-life Internet conditions) Configure server and client, install games and try it out

10 VIRTUALGL (AND TURBOVNC AND X2GO) Unfortunately, I was not successful in getting the game to run via VirtualGL This meant that testing with TurboVNC and X2go was also impossible GL_ANGLE_texture_compression_dxt3. This system DOES NOT support the OpenGL extension GL_ANGLE_texture_compression_dxt5. This system supports the OpenGL extension GL_ARB_buffer_storage. This system DOES NOT support the OpenGL extension GLX_EXT_swap_control_tear. 11 HDX 3D PRO (CITRIX) After configuring the Citrix setup, I found out that it is not compatible with consumer NVIDIA GPU S like the one I have Since Amazon EC2 does not support Windows desktop operating systems, I could not run HDX 3D Pro on a rented server This meant that HDX 3D Pro could also unfortunately not be tested SOURCE: AMAZON EC2 FAQ

12 CONCLUSION With today s software (that I was able to test), game streaming is not possible Possibility for further research: custom protocol
