2 Device Connection The Data Wiping Workstation provides a maximum of 12 data destruction channels, including 2 x USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0, 3 x SATA/IDE, 1 x SCSI, and 4 x SATA/SAS channels. CAUTION: Ensure that you connect a USB medium when the Data Wiping Workstation program is running. You can install a disk as follows: 1 Open the cover of a disk bay. 2 Insert the disk into the interface to the bottom. 3 Close the bay cover. 4 Press the power switch of the bay. 10

CAUTION: Check the direction of the interface of the disk before connecting it into the disk bay, otherwise it may cause damage to the disk. Although the system supports hot-plugging, users are recommended to follow the instructions below: Turn off the power of the disk bay. Open the bay cover and wait for 5 to 10 seconds for the disk to stop spinning. Unplug the disk slowly. 11

Do not use the SATA interface and the IDE interface at the same time; only connect one of them at one time. The following steps consider a SATA disk as an example to describe how to use the wiping interfaces. 1 Ensure that the SATA/IDE interface area is powered off. Connect a SATA disk to SATA interface and load the hard disk into the hard disk loader. NOTE: Each of the SATA and IDE interfaces corresponds to one green indicator respectively. 2 Turn on the power switch, and the red power indicator is on, and the SATA and IDE indicators blink alternately. 3 Load the disk and check if the disk is detected in the Disk Manager. 4 (Optional) If you want to remove or replace a disk, make sure the power is turned off before you unplug the power cable and data cable of the disk. 12

CAUTION: After users finish using the Data Wiping workstation or the device needs to be restart, make sure to turn off the power in each interface area and unplug the disks before restarting the device. 13

Wiping Disks Data Wiping Workstation User Manual To wipe a disk is to write the entire disk space with the same pattern (normally a hexadecimal character) to completely overwrite the original data on the disk. Wiping disks helps destruct sensitive data on a disk to prevent unauthorized disclosure of information. The Data Wiping Workstation supports wiping data on an entire disk, or specified sectors. Users can also customize the wipe pattern and the number of times a disk is wiped. A maximum of 12 channels of storage media can be wiped at the same time (including 4 x USB, 3 x SATA/IDE, 1 x SCSI, and 4 x SATA/SAS channels), and the detailed procedures are as follows: 1 Start the Data Wiping Workstation and run the Data Wiping Workstation software. The main interface is displayed. 2 Connect the storage media that you want to wipe to the Data Wiping Workstation. For details about how to connect a storage medium, see Chapter 2, "Device Connection." The following figure shows the appearance of these two converters. Multi-Functional Card Reader The Multi-Functional Card Reader provides many interfaces for digital storage cards (SM/xD, SD/MMC, MS/MS PRO, CF/MD) for wiping or formatting. The card reader is connected to the Data Wiping Workstation through USB interface. 32

The way of connection is introduced as follows: insert the storage card to the correct port in the card reader and connect the card reader to the USB interface of the Data Wiping Workstation. CAUTION: Only one port of the card reader can be used during storage card wiping. 33

5 FAQ Q1: Why the Data Wiping Workstation software cannot be started? A1: When you start the software, ensure that there is no USB device connecting to the Data Wiping Workstation in the USB interface area. Q2: How do I handle the problem where the USB thumb drive connected to the USB interface in the front panel of the Data Wiping Workstation cannot be detected? A2: In this case, try to reconnect the USB thumb drive. If the device still cannot be detected, try to pull it out a little after it is inserted. 34
