3 About Projekt Neptun In 2001, ETH Zurich launched a project whose goal it was to equip ETH students with high quality laptops at a manageable price. In order to ensure that the quality requirements were met the corresponding work group established an evaluation and testing process which assesses the hardware as well as manufacturer services. Once Projekt Neptun had been successfully established within ETH Zurich, the program was made available to all members of Swiss institutions of higher education in a step by step progression. In 2011 Projekt Neptun became independent of ETH Zurich and in May 2016 was integrated into the non-profit foundation Stiftung Studenten-Discount (SSD). Quality & Manufacturer Evaluation It is our belief that both the students budget and the environment benefit from the objective of equipping students with a laptop that will last throughout their studies. The selected manufacturers offer high quality devices for all types of study, be it art or mechanical engineering. The original evaluation process underwent repeated refinements and the range of the offer is continuously adapted to ensure that the requirements of students of all types of study backgrounds are met. Neptun Waves The hardware recommended by Projekt Neptun can be acquired twice a year during two sales waves taking place at the beginning of each semester. By limiting the purchase periods, it is possible to offer the hardware at extremely competitive discounts and in unlimited stock. Demo Days The Demo Days, the Projekt Neptun road show at institutions of higher education throughout Switzerland, offer the possibility of seeing and testing the hardware live. Our team is onsite to answer questions and give recommendations to anyone who requires assistance in selecting a new device. Neptun Software Service The Neptun Software Service gives Neptun customers free access to a full version of an antivirus software (for both Mac and PC) as well as a commercial backup program (for PC). The Software Service site also links to a host of recommended open source programs. 3

5 Neptun Categories Explained Baseline Laptops Neptun Baseline laptops are affordable devices with well-built hardware, 3-year, business-class warranties, and capable Intel i5 CPUs for fields of study outside of STEM and media creation. They are equipped with good keyboards and displays, robust and expandable cases, versatile connectivity options, as well as sufficient memory and storage space for general study tasks. Medium Performance () Laptops Neptun Medium Performance laptops reflect the perfect compromise between performance, weight, and battery life. Fast Intel i7 CPUs, large amounts of memory and storage space, high-end connectivity options, and high-resolution displays are integrated into slim devices. Laptops with the logo feature dedicated graphics cards for improved performance in CAD and media creation tasks. High Performance Laptops Neptun High Performance laptops are optimized for maximum computing power. With workstation-class CPUs, and professional graphics cards, these highly expandable laptops can handle the most complex and computationally intensive tasks. Some models are equipped with error-correcting ECC RAM. Weight Neptun devices come in three weight-classes: devices under 1.3 kg are optimized for low weight, sometimes with compromises on performance or display size; devices between 1.3 kg and 1.8 kg are still easy to carry with a good balance between performance, size, and weight; devices over 1.8 kg are optimized for maximum performance with no compromises on power or features, but they are less comfortable to carry around all day. Convertible Convertibles are full-featured laptops with 360 hinges for their touchscreens, and they always include an active digital pen in Neptun offers. The displays can be folded around the keyboard to go from laptop mode to tablet mode. The pen allows the user to take handwritten notes, create drawings, and to add comments to documents (e.g. PDFs) directly on-screen. Hybrid Tablet Neptun Hybrid Tablets are Windows tablets with similar or equal performance to laptops. They feature active digital pens and detachable keyboards, both of which are included in all Neptun hybrid tablet bundles. These versatile devices are very light and compact, but they feature fewer ports than full-sized laptops. Used as a tablet, they are ideal for media consumption and for handwritten notes.
