1 Technical Reference: BIOS Updates & Settings for POS Terminals July 2010 This document is intended for Campus customers who utilize the Campus Point-of-Sale application for terminals running the Windows OS. It provides instructions on performing BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) updates and applying optimized settings for the IBM SurePOS terminals. For additional instructions, please visit the IBM website: html/surepos500.html. NOTE: BIOS updates require PS2/USB mouse or keyboard, USB floppy disk drive and a 1.44 MB floppy disk. The model also requires a minimum 64 MB UFD. BIOS Update: IBM SurePOS 500 Series Model x3 (Including IBM Models: , , , and ) Connect a PC-compatible mouse and keyboard to the POS Terminal. (USB or PS/2) Update BIOS to the latest Windows version: X5KT260 NOTE: If system is already at BIOS version X5KT260 please skip to Step 3. To install the BIOS update, follow these steps: i. Download the latest BIOS Update disk image from the IBM SurePOS 500 Support site: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/retail/poseng/surepos500/4840-xx3biosx5kt260.exe ii. Fully format a 1.44 MB floppy disk. If any bad sectors are reported, use another disk. Use this command for best results: format a: /f:1.44 iii. Do not write-protect the disk. With the formatted disk in the floppy drive, execute the image file. iv. Attach an external USB floppy disk drive to the POS Terminal and insert the disk. v. Power on or restart the POS Terminal and allow it to boot the disk. vi. The system will automatically power off or restart when the BIOS update is complete. IF PROBLEMS ARE ENCOUNTERED WHILE CREATING THE DISK: Try another disk or another PC with which to create the disk. Try downloading the image file again. IF PROBLEMS ARE ENCOUNTERED BOOTING THE DISK: Enter the CMOS Setup Utility. On the Advanced BIOS Features menu, ensure that USB- FDD is selected as the first boot device Infinite Campus, Inc. 2 B. IF PROBLEMS ARE ENCOUNTERED DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS: Record the error message and contact IBM support. When BIOS update is complete, unplug the USB floppy drive from the POS Terminal Enter BIOS Setup Configuration Utility. Start the terminal. B. Press <DEL> to enter the BIOS Setup Configuration Utility when prompted. Load the BIOS optimized default settings: Select Load Optimized Defaults using the keyboard arrow keys. B. When selected press Enter on the keyboard. C. When asked to Load Optimized Defaults (Y/N) press Y for yes. BIOS default optimized settings are then loaded. 5. Configure the Standard CMOS Features: Select Standard CMOS Features using the keyboard arrow keys. C. Write down/record the LAN MAC Address, Machine Type/Model, Machine Serial Number and BIOS Version. D. Verify that the Time and Date are correct. Adjust, if necessary, using arrow keys and the PgUp/PgDn buttons to change the values. E. When correct, press ESC to return to main BIOS menu. 6. Configure the Advanced BIOS Features: Select Advanced BIOS Features using the keyboard arrow keys. C. Change the system Boot Order by using the arrow keys to select the items below. D. Press Enter to bring up the list of available selections: First Boot Device = USB-CDROM Second Boot Device = USB-FDD Third Boot Device = HDD-0 E. Change Setup Touch Silent Mode = Enabled. F. Change No Setup Touch Entry = Enabled. G. Press ESC to return to the BIOS Main Menu. 7. Save and exit the BIOS Setup Configuration Utility: Select Save & Exit Setup using the keyboard arrow keys. C. When asked to Save to CMOS and Exit (Y/N) press Y for yes. The terminal will reboot. 2

(USB or PS/2) Update BIOS to the latest Windows version: X6KT170 NOTE: If system is already at BIOS version X6KT170 please skip to Step 3. To install the BIOS update, follow these steps: i. Download the latest BIOS Update disk image from the IBM SurePOS 500 Support site: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/retail/poseng/surepos500/4846-xx5biosx6kt170.exe ii. Fully format a 1.44 MB floppy disk. If any bad sectors are reported, use another disk. Use this command for best results: format a: /f:1.44 iii. Do not write-protect the disk. With the formatted disk in the floppy drive, execute the image file. iv. Attach an external USB floppy disk drive to the POS Terminal and insert the disk. v. Power on or restart the POS Terminal and allow it to boot the disk. vi. The system will automatically power off or restart when the BIOS update is complete. Configure the Advanced BIOS Features: Select Advanced BIOS Features using the keyboard arrow keys. C. Change the system Boot Order by using the arrow keys to select the items below. D. Press Enter to bring up the list of available selections: First Boot Device = CDROM Second Boot Device = USB-FDD Third Boot Device = Hard Disk E. Change Setup Touch Silent Mode = Enabled. F. Change No Setup Touch Entry = Enabled. G. Press ESC to return to the BIOS Main Menu Configure the Integrated Peripherals: Select Integrated Peripherals using the keyboard arrow keys. C. Select the Onboard Device sub-menu. D. Press Enter on the keyboard. E. Change the items below using the arrow keys to select the item, then when selected, press Enter to bring up the list of available selections: i. Change USB Keyboard Support = Enabled. ii. Change USB Mouse Support = Enabled. iii. Change Audio Support = All Disabled. F. Press ESC to return to the Integrated Peripherals menu. G. Press ESC again to return to the BIOS main menu. Save and exit the BIOS Setup Configuration Utility: Select Save & Exit Setup using the keyboard arrow keys. When asked if you want to Save to CMOS and Exit (Y/N) press C. Y for yes. The POS Terminal will reboot. 4
5 BIOS Update: IBM SurePOS 500 Series Model Connect a PC-compatible mouse and keyboard to the POS Terminal. (USB or PS/2) Update BIOS to the latest Windows version: HHKT170 NOTE: If system is already at BIOS version HHKT170 please skip to Step 3. To install the BIOS update, follow these steps: i. Download the latest BIOS Update disk image from the IBM SurePOS 500 Support site: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/retail/poseng/surepos500/4851-xx4bios170.exe ii. Fully format a 1.44 MB floppy disk. If any bad sectors are reported, use another disk. Use this command for best results: format a: /f:1.44 iii. Do not write-protect the disk. With the formatted disk in the floppy drive, execute the image file. iv. Attach an external USB floppy disk drive to the POS Terminal and insert the disk. v. Power on or restart the POS Terminal and allow it to boot the disk. vi. The system will automatically power off or restart when the BIOS update is complete. IF PROBLEMS ARE ENCOUNTERED WHILE CREATING THE DISK: Try another disk or another PC with which to create the disk. Try downloading the image file again. Press ESC to return to the BIOS Main Menu Configure the PnP/PCI Configurations: Select PnP/PCI Configurations using the keyboard arrow keys. C. Change the PNP OS Installed option to say Yes. D. Press Enter on the keyboard. F. Press ESC to return to the BIOS Main Menu. Save and exit the BIOS Setup Configuration Utility: Select Save & Exit Setup using the keyboard arrow keys. When asked if you want to Save to CMOS and Exit? press C. Y for yes. The POS Terminal will reboot. 6

Download the latest BIOS Update disk image from the IBM SurePOS 500 Support site. ii. Fully format a 1.44 MB floppy disk. If any bad sectors are reported, use another disk. Use this command for best results: format a: /f:1.44 iii. Do not write-protect the disk. With the formatted disk in the floppy drive, execute the image file. iv. Attach an external USB floppy disk drive to the POS Terminal and insert the disk. v. Power on or restart the POS Terminal and allow it to boot the disk. vi.
