3 Introduction Now every computer and embedded manufacturers are concentrating on Flash drives we are going to design a gadget which will copy the files from exist floppy disks and optical disks with good transfer rate and compatible. We are proposing SATA(Serial Advanced Technology Attachment), which will replace the exist gadget PATA(Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment) used for the same purpose with good metrics 3

4 Market Existing devices like Parallel ATA are used in consumer desktop and laptop computers, and in embedded applications PATA remains widely used in industrial and embedded applications that use CompactFlash storage. Parallel ATA (the redesignation for the legacy ATA specifications) used a 16-bit wide data bus with many additional support and control signals, all operating at much lower frequency 4

5 Market Some of the existing products that dont appreciate cd/dvd Mac book and apple tv doesnt feature optical drives. Japan already started manufacturing cd -free laptops. i-tunes new logo is no longer a cd 5

6 Market Also usb are superior in terms of speed, portability, multiport accessing... most of the users have started looking for USB's instead(in place) of cd/dvds. So its appreciable to have a gadget that supports direct data transfer from existing cd/dvds to usb's 6

7 Market So our product will be replace the exist PATA which is slower, and our market is computers, desktops and embedded applications manufacturer like Intel, Microsoft etc Individuals with large collections of audio/video discs Shops trying to convert or setup digital stores Online video services trying to update collection Enterprises moving towards automated secure and robust backup technologies 7

8 Roadmap Now we are designing SATA with the same speed as PATA with the lower cost than PATA. But for every 12 months the speed will increase by 2 times and we will develop Logic analyzers and bus analyzers which collect, analyze, decode, and store rapidly-changing signals and waveforms Now target on Desktops manufacturer After 18 months spread to Laptops and Embedded system manufacturers. Decrease in cost 8

9 Roadmap Add support for future versions of USB and SATA Low power versions capable of running long time on battery power Unification of all controllers onto a single die microprocessor/controller capable of handling multiple protocols Add support for newer optical disc formats like Blueray(BD), HD-DVD(high Density) Add support to other filesystems like NTFS, ext etc.., for handling larger les especially in cases like HD-DVD and BD 9

11 Architecture Comprises of USB controller connected to sink port, USB-SATA bridge and Optical Disk Drive. Optical Disk drive considered to provide SATA output. USB-SATA bridge interfaces SATA to USB protocol with a controller taking care of matching data rates. USB controller with a small kernel with the USB driver loaded to take care of I/O to flash drives. 11

SATA host-adapters and devices communicate via a high-speed serial cable over two pairs of conductors 12

16 Architecture Components USB I/F consists of the analog front-end and packet decoder used to connect the controller to the host device Similarly SATA I/F consists of front-end to connect to either hard disk drives or optical disk drives Controller is used to match the data rates and adjust according to the host rate selection Memory is used both as buffer and as storage of instructions for controller to decode USB data and format it into SATA packets and vice versa 16

19 SATA Topology SATA uses a point-to-point architecture. The physical connection between a controller and a storage device is not shared among other controllers and storage devices. SATA defines multipliers, which allows a single SATA controller to drive multiple storage devices. The multiplier performs the function of a hub; the controller and each storage device is connected to the hub. 19
