Ambient Communication in Peer-to-Peer Social Networks Wendy Mackay Directeur de Recherch in situ Situated Interaction 12 Juin
Beyond telephones Interpersonal communication has been transformed by the World-Wide Web Explosion in the use of : , on-line chat, skype Blogs, wikis, on-line comments Facebook, Myspace, Twitter 2
Is that all there is? Who do you most want to communicate with? Strangers? Work collegues? Family and close friends? Is it the same kind of communication? no Do we want the same kind of technology? no 3
InterLiving EU Project Three-year participatory design project 6 distributed families over 70 participants France & Sweden Observation, interviews, design workshops, working prototypes, technology probes
Research question Not What technologies should we create for the home? but rather How do distributed families really want to communicate? Shi* in emphasis from technology-centred to family-centred Helped us to re-articulate the design problem 5
So, what do distributed families really want? NOT to be connected to everyone in the world BUT to maintain on-going contact with close family and friends to stay in touch
So, what do distributed families really want? Ambient communication not just focused interaction Technology should be: Simple to use Aesthetically pleasing In context Enjoyable Marie: When it rains, I open my umbrella and I am automatically linked to my best friend s umbrella.
Solution : Communication appliances Helping people stay in touch with family and friends Communication appliances support: Peripheral, not just focused communication Lightweight, not complex interaction No wires, no buttons, no clutter Easy as a toaster that lets you communicate! 8
Communication appliances Our Definition: simple-to-use, single-function devices that let people communicate, passively or actively, with small groups of remotely-located friends and family 9
Communication appliances Key features: Pre-determined (though changeable) connections stay open From focused, synchronous contact to peripheral awareness Shared media: sound, images, video, text, gestures, touch, etc. Share personal data, not externally-produced or copyrighted Archived securely and not open to outside interference 10
Some examples Tok-I-Tok MessageProbe VideoProbe MirrorSpace NightBoard Storytable A20 MissU WeMe Live sound patterns Hand-written notes Random and chosen images Fuzzy and crisp overlapping video Ambient and controlled shared images Interactive video stories Shared music Shared music and ambient sound Shared abstract and intentional patterns 11
Tok-i-Tok Capture ambient sound patterns synchronous one-to-one link sound or light Users create meaning 12
MessageProbe Hand-written notes on a tablet screen Synchronous or asynchronous Zoomable interface All notes shared among all households Temporal or selected order 13
MessageProbe conversations between grandpa and kids message? conversation? game? 14
15
VideoProbe Images captured by a video camera 3 without motion = 1 image Image archive shared between households We re going away for a week Happy Vacation Everybody!! 16
Why don t Communication appliances exist? Setting up the network is too hard No plug-and-play infrastructure No simple configuration interface 17
Why don t Communication appliances exist? Setting up the network is too hard No plug-and-play infrastructure No simple configuration interface Just how can users link communication appliances together? We need a common infrastructure to make communication appliances viable in the marketplace 18
Key insights Each person has a small number of close friends Groups are relatively stable over time Controlling connections must be lightweight Communication within groups is private This is NOT Facebook! 19
Design Requirements Simple: Easy for a grandmother to use with her 8-year-old grandchild Tangible: Let people visualise and manipulate who is connected Flexible: Easy to change configuration and access rules Secure: Private and secure communication and storage of shared data Standard: Common interface for all communication appliances 20
Our solution: FamilyNet Simple: Direct manipulation interface that handles complex scenarios Tangible: Physical cards with RFID tags Flexible: Multiple layers of control Secure: Public key cryptography and peer-to-peer networks Standard: Interface decoupled from communication appliance 21
FamilyNet vision Separate: information exchange from managing network connections Communication appliances FamilyNet reader Internet FamilyNet server data Local storage Public key server Domain name server server server 22
General architecture FamilyNet cards FamilyNet module in each communication appliance FamilyNet ;meter in each household meter FamilyNet servers on the Internet server 23
Pre-configured cards 24
Exchanging cards = creating network 25
Creating a link = placing a card 26
Simple creation of overlapping networks Red Green 27
Alternative: Telebeads Teens create their own jewelry interactive beads that identify friends Rings, bracelets, wearables 28
A few other examples A common peer-to-peer infrastructure could enable a wide variety of communication appliances MirrorSpace WeMe NightBoard MissU A20 Marker Clock ICI-TV Shared video with privacy control Shared abstract and intentional patterns Ambient or controlled dynamic images Shared music and ambient sound Shared music Activity awareness Multi-scale ambient communication 29
MirrorSpace Handling privacy concerns: Distance to mirror controls video image & communication Proximity sensor, image analysis Far away: blurry image Approach: crisp image 30
MirrorSpace Handling privacy concerns: Distance to mirror controls video image & communication Proximity sensor, image analysis Camera placed in center of screen Exhibited at: La Villette Pompidou Centre Family members get much closer than strangers 31
Nightboard Remote couples Input: movement detector laser pointer Display: projection on the ceiling Supports both direct and implicit interaction 32
WeMe A Conversation Piece that supports multiple engagement and multiple interpretation. Bubbles move in response to ambient sounds (local and distant) 1-3 people per household can create patterns 33
WeMe 34
MissU Private radio channel Implicit : shared ambient sounds (dual control) Explicit : shared music playlists 35
A20 Shared music player 20-sided icosohedron triangular speakers Interaction : movement in space Play & share music with Sony CSL 36
Marker Clock Interact 07 Focus on the elderly Peercare vs. Big Brother : communication vs. monitoring Lightweight shared awareness of activity at a distance 37
ICI-TV Goal : to help seniors remain independent while living at home and stay in touch with close family, friends and care-givers Integration of several communication appliances: services via a television and settop box an intuitive, easy-to-use interface enriched bi-lateral communication via dedicated television channels ICI-TV is funded as a technology transfer projetc by Digiteo in conjunction with a CEA-based startup, Praesto 38
