Executive Summary According to Simon Fraser University s website, the typical amount a Canadian student will spend in on books and supplies is projected to reach $1,020 [1]. The data collected by the NDP group reports the average Windows laptop is $700 and the average Apple laptop is above $1,500 [2], and IMS Research has also found that the average tablet cost is $386 [3]. Every single student will be forced to spend money on one of those products, whether it is a laptop, a tablet, or just pens, pencils and paper. With our product StyLight, any student can greatly minimize this expense and increase productivity. Here at LumoTech we have a commitment to carefully craft and engineer our product StyLight to deliver the best possible method of taking notes for every consumer. With a press of a button, the user will be able to project their smartphone screen onto any desk or tabletop to increase their writing surface area, and with our specially designed stylus, be able to interact with the projected screen in real time, saving it digitally for later access across all devices. No more loose-leaf papers that get lost or ripped. Our product also eliminates the need to carry hefty and bulky laptops and tablets just to record notes. Using your smartphone, open the desired lecture notes or start a new document, connect our projector to your smartphone via cable, project onto your desk, and start writing with our stylus. With real time user feedback, the user will be able to see what they are writing. With the affordable cost of StyLight compared to any other alternative, there is no reason for students to not use it. StyLight is targeted towards undergraduates and graduates, irrelevant of major and age. Currently, there is no product like this on the market, only similar ones in production which feature one functionality of our product. For example, a pen exists to take notes, but does not deliver any real time visual feedback. This is where we differentiate ourselves from the competition. Our product will include a system that communicates with itself to provide fast and responsive feedback. In addition, StyLight will also be cheaper, modular and scalable. Further details on design, costs, and feasibility can be found in this document. LumoTech consists of six fifth-year Simon Fraser University students, with expertise and experiences in different fields such as electronics, computers, and electromechanical systems. We obtain a varying set of skills necessary for the design and production of our product. These skills include, but are not limited to, circuit design and analysis, real time embedded programming, user experience and usability design, and mechanical design. With detailed research and designs already completed, milestones and deadlines set, and an effective method of communication and collaboration established, it s only a matter of time until StyLight will reshape the landscape of note-taking technology. ii

1.0 Introduction In today s ever advancing society, technology has been the catalyst behind improvements in accessibility and convenience, two things that have become increasingly important to students. In the face of notebooks and binders that never seem to have enough paper, pens with no ink and pencils with no lead, and the added weight of textbooks, students have eagerly transitioned to solutions that remove those hassles. With the help of smartphones, tablets, and notebook computers, students lives in the classroom and at home have become easier. Of these products, tablets running mobile operating systems with large screened peripherals have, and continue to see, the largest segment growths. Although these devices have made it easier to be a student, buying a tablet and stylus while already paying for a personal mobile device is not always affordable. While students can get away with accessing class materials solely on their smartphones, the screen is often too small, and does not allow for clear and convenient note-taking. This motivated us to look for a more robust way to make note-taking easier. Since smartphones are able to access lecture notes and textbooks online and download them as modifiable PDF documents, StyLight allows the entire smartphone screen to be projected onto any surface in front of you, enlarging the smartphone screen to a size that allows for easy note-taking and modification of those lecture notes. The notes can be written directly onto the projected image with a StyLight stylus, and then saved to the PDF document on the smartphone for future access. With StyLight, any flat surface can be turned into a writable display instantly. With its affordable price, easy connectivity, mobility, and versatility, it is great for doing schoolwork at home or in the classroom. With its lightweight design and compact packaging, StyLight allows you to turn any flat surface into your notebook. This proposal will feature the following sections: Explanation of our product StyLight, and its features and components Risks, benefits, and target users of our product The business, marketing, and funding sources for our venture Logistics of our implementation, project scope, and schedule The LumoTech company make-up and team profiles 2.0 System Overview 2.1 Product Design LumoTech is committed to giving students a better experience in the classroom. Below are some of the main features of StyLight: 5

Large Projected Screen: The screen of the user s smartphone is projected onto any flat surface by a Pico projector inside StyLight. An efficient keystone correction algorithm corrects the image distortion in real time so the user will not see a skewed image. The luminosity of the projector automatically adjusts based on the ambient light of the room, and the clarity of the image focuses based on the distance between projector and surface. The projector is connected to the mobile device through HDMI connection. Note Taking Made Easy: The user can take notes with the use of the StyLight engineered stylus in conjunction with any note-taking application. The stylus resembles a typical pen, aside from an LED that turns on when the stylus tip is pressed onto the surface during writing. An infrared camera is embedded into the top of the StyLight to detect the stylus movement in the x and y directions. The position of the camera relative to the projected screen will essentially eliminate the z coordinate, simplifying the motion tracking of writing into a 2-Dimensional problem. Even in low-light conditions, the camera should track the LED on the stylus. Data from the camera then is processed on an Arduino board and converted into coordinates that correlate to those on the user s smartphone s screen to reconstruct the writing onto the PDF document. The processor will send data to the smartphone via Bluetooth. Ultra-Portable: Compact design manufactured out of light and durable materials. Inexpensive: Students do not need to spend hundreds of dollars on textbooks, tablets, and notebooks; everything they need is on one device. Figure 1 shows a flow diagram of our design. Figure 1 - High-level Flow Diagram of StyLight 6

We have rendered models of our device prototype and show some of its design aspects from several views below. Figure 3 SolidWorks Design of Projector and Camera Module Figure 2 SolidWorks Design of Stylus Used to Interact with the Projected Screen 7

Figure 4 SolidWorks Internal View of Camera Design, PCB, and Projector 2.2 Scope The objective of this project is to design and build a portable and innovative device in order to replace the need to purchase expensive tablets. The short-throw Pico projector is able to project the screen of an Android supported smartphone onto any surface, and the stylus is able to interact with the projected screen and transfer the written data to the phone in real time. The scope of this project is to produce a full-feature working prototype by the end of March 2017, and a final feasible portable product by the end of August Accomplishing the prototype phase in the early stages of the project allows us to move onto a second re-design iteration prioritizing refinement and miniaturization. The prototype and final products will include the following main features: Auto-focusing short-throw projection of Android smartphone screen onto a surface LED stylus to interact with the projected screen System recognizes stylus location on the surface and transfers the data to the phone in real time Implementing an ambient light sensor for better projection in dim or bright environments 8

We strongly believe, with the expertise of our company members, that we are able to deliver a full functioning portable stylus and projector device with the above features. The following additional features will be implemented if budget and time permit: Implementing a wearable fingertip elastic LED as an additional alternative to the stylus Extending the supporting mobile phones to Apple products Long-throw projection onto big screen Throughout the project, one of our main concerns will be to improve the battery life as much as possible, as we understand battery life is a main desire for end users. In addition, we are aware that longer battery life could elevate our product amongst the competitors in the market. As explained, our project holds great potential for expandability and increasing functionality. 2.3 Benefits Nowadays, tablets are purchased by people mainly for their large screen display as well as the notetaking feature they provide for end users. We envision creating a portable and feasible product that costs less than a tablet in the market. StyLight mainly benefits students and business professionals who manage their learning and progress by actively writing notes during meetings and classes. This product is also convenient for elderly people who experience visual impairment to a degree that magnification of the mobile screen can help them navigate through their phones. Therefore, our audience has the freedom to project the contents on their mobile device s screen anywhere a flat surface can be found. 9

2.4 Risks Before we began to identify risks, we had to establish a scale to help us categorize the severity and probability of the risks. This gives us clear criteria for sorting possible risks involved in the project so we may focus on the prevention of severe ones, and develop effective mitigation strategies to execute in the event that they occur. Tables 1 and 2 below provide a scale that is used to determine the severity and probability of risks respectively. Severity 5 Severe 4 Significant 3 Moderate 2 Minor 1 Minimal Table 1 - Scale of Severity of Risks Description A risk event that, if it occurs, will have a severe impact on achieving desired results, to the extent that one or more of its critical outcome objectives will not be achieved A risk event that, if it occurs, will have a significant impact on achieving desired results, to the extent that one or more stated outcome objectives will fail below acceptable levels A risk event that, if it occurs, will have a moderate impact on achieving desired results, to the extent that one or more stated outcomes will fail well below goals but above minimum acceptable levels A risk event that, if it occurs, will have a minor impact on achieving desired results, to the extent that one or more stated outcome objectives will fail below goals but well above minimum acceptable levels A risk event that, if it occurs, will have little or no impact on achieving outcome objectives Table 2 - Scale of Probability of Risks Probability Description High % Medium 35 65% Low 0 35% With the scales provided, Table 3 below provides a list of risks we have identified and categorized with mitigation strategies to help us deal with such issues. Severity 5 Table 3 - Risks, Severity of them, Impact Areas, and Mitigation Factors Risk Impact Area Mitigation Strategy Core Modules development takes longer than expected All other modules will be delayed and testing will also be delayed. Have multiple people contribute to the core development and complete as soon as possible. Prioritize modules and have frequent check-ups with progress. Re-distribute work and roles as necessary to ensure important modules are completed first. 10

Risk Impact Area Mitigation Strategy Risk Impact Area Mitigation Strategy Risk Impact Area Mitigation Strategy Risk Impact Area Mitigation Strategy Risk Impact Area Mitigation Strategy Risk Impact Area Mitigation Strategy Risk Impact Area Mitigation Strategy Parts not operating or not compatible with one another as expected May lead to very long delays as shipment of parts can take weeks. Researching very carefully and thoughtfully. Ordering parts early to give us time for possible reordering. Integration of modules Since all modules should work together for the device to function properly, this can impact our project severely. Ensure all members understand the requirements and processes in developing a module feature. Frequently test compatibility with core to avoid breaking modules. Testing takes longer than expected Some features may behave in unintended ways for the odd cases and some features may fail altogether. Allocate soft deadlines ahead of time to allow for more testing. Test continuously as we develop. Allocate a sufficient amount of time for pure testing. Underestimating our budget for completion of project (Facing higher expenses) Interferes with our ability to develop, which may lead to delays in completing the project. Members have agreed to help the project financially if faced with this issue Device over-heats due to the projector and constant work of the processor May decrease the lifetime of the device as well decreasing the pleasantness of the device. Automatically adjust the brightness of the screen. Use efficient processing codes. Have a fan to cool down the system. Brightness of the projected screen will not be sufficient in bright rooms Decreases pleasantness of the device. Try different sources of light for the projector. Correcting the skewed image projected by the projector Decreases pleasantness of the device. Change the angle of the projector, which can affect the appearance of the product. 11

2.5 Evaluation At LumoTech, we believe that every successful project needs a strong evaluation plan. Therefore, our evaluation process should begin during project development and continue throughout implementation. The process can be broken down into a series of steps, from preparation to development and implementation. 1) Design a conceptual model of the product that meets the main requirements. In this stage, we ensure that all modules of our design can theoretically be built by the components we identified. 2) Create evaluation questions and measurable short-term and long-term outcomes. 3) Test each module separately to evaluate its outcome. 4) Redesign and repeat this process until the expected outcome is seen. 3.0 Market and Competition Our society s preference to use smaller devices in order to do more computational operations is one of the fastest growing trends in the industry. Hence the need for cellphone manufacturing companies to add more computational power and useful features to mobile devices. In the past 5 years, smart device consumers are tending to use more touch input based products than physical input hardware, getting rid of keyboards on smart phones to the point that most of the flagship products have touch LCDs. With the rise of virtual reality and the applications this new technology has, the next big level up for the industry is to use virtual I/O to improve the user experience and new solutions to the smart device industry. These days, electronic note-taking methods using tablets and laptops are rising in popularity among consumers in opposition to the dated methods of physical pen and paper, which has its pros and cons. With that being said, one of the cons of using tablets and laptops as note-taking devices is the weight of the device and the space these devices occupy. Smartphones have evolved to possess the computational power of a small computer, more than enough to fulfill the burden of taking electronic notes -- the only pitfall being the smaller screen on smartphones, making it challenging to take notes and control your input. So why purchase StyLight? The few Samsung smartphones with built-in projectors haven t been as popular as Samsung had hoped [4] and although Lenovo has announced the world s first smartphone with a laser projector [5], both of these companies have created products that are integrated within their devices, leaving no room for flexibility and choice in regards to the type of mobile device being used. For young people in today s generations, selecting the perfect smartphone that suits each individual s 12

needs and preferences is important. StyLight considers the need for flexibility and choice and can be used with any smartphone device. With the easily attachable Pico short throw projector, students will have the ability to study and complete assignments anywhere without having to worry about carrying around extra materials. The growth of the Pico projector market is driven by a number of factors including, but not limited to, ease of connectivity, high resolution output, greater display size, and improved brightness. With StyLight however, the consumer will have all of these with the added function of writing memory. StyLight is a product that bridges the gap between virtual input and smartphones with the primary purpose of taking notes using your smartphone. StyLight offers a completely new approach to user interface experience through virtual display projection and LED light source tracking technology. StyLight is targeting tech savvy early adopters with more disposable income, and a tendency to work with new technologies and innovative solutions to improve day-to-day tasks. The early-targeted consumers are more prone to accept fixes and updates that are customary to new products such as StyLight. The price on our product will be lowered for the next generations due to production efficiency, widening our product s target demographic. StyLight delivers the ability to project your mobile screen in wider dimensions to give our customers an exceptional experience of note-taking and mobile device interaction on any surface. StyLight has a revolutionary user interface utilizing the cutting-edge technology of Pico-projectors and infrared cameras to turn any surface into your notebook. StyLight is lighter in comparison to tablets and laptops and will cost you less in terms of note-taking solutions. There is no direct competition for our product as it is the first of its kind for this scope of application. Some of the alternative solutions to this application are tablets, laptops, and smart pens with accompanying notebooks. StyLight outperforms its indirect competitors in three important categories. Firstly, it is less expensive than other competitors, increasing its desirability for the end user to acquire. Secondly, its portable design is light-weight and easy to carry around, as well as durable to withstand physical impact, increasing its reliability as a product. Lastly, StyLight has a more pleasant user interface in terms of taking notes, as physically performing the act of writing is natural to the user in comparison to fingers interacting with a fragile LCD. 13

4.0 Cost Consideration 4.1 Budget For the next three months, we will be working to develop the proof-of-concept prototype. Afterwards, we will move to the production phase to commercialize our product. The following table outlines our proposed budget and expenses for the completion of a proof-ofconcept prototype of StyLight as well as building a prototype. Table 4 - Cost Breakdown for Phase Phase Component Estimate price Phase 1: Pico Projector $200 Image Sensor (camera) [6] $80 Arduino Board Free-to-use Minor Electronics and Other Accessories $50 3D Printing Cost $20 Contingency (20%) $70 Total $420 Phase 2: PCB (3 iterations) $80 * 3 = 240 Contingency (15%) $36 Total $276 Grand Total $696 and The budget also includes a 20% contingency cost for Phase1 and a 15% contingency cost for Phase 2 to account for unspecified expenses such as shipping and taxes. We allow 3 iterations for printing our circuit boards to obtain the required result. Beyond the hardware components, our software development requires free-to-use applications that are available for licensing. 4.2 Funding and Resources To cover the funding required for our project's expenditures, we are investigating two main sources: The Engineering Science Society Endowment Fund (ESEF), for which applications are due in May 2017, and the IEEE Canadian Foundation Special Grants, for which applications are due on March 15, The WIGHTON Engineering Development Fund will also be considered if the previously mentioned sources were not able to provide aid. To apply for these sources, we are fully committed to preparing proposals and presentations, as well as any other required documentation. We believe that by applying early for these funds, we can increase our chances of receiving them. 14

Furthermore, we plan to lower our costs in Phase 1 of the project by reusing the tools and components previously used in our individual side-projects, as well as borrowing materials from friends and colleagues. For example, an Arduino board will be borrowed from ESSS resources until we proceed to Phase 2 of the project. In the event our funding and awards do not cover the full amount of our project, all members have agreed to share the outstanding costs evenly to ensure that the development of our product will not be hindered. 4.3 Final Product Pricing Strategy The minimum cost of one single prototype unit is around $420 as described in section 4.1, Table 4. In the future, if StyLight proceeds to large-scale production, we can outsource our components and reduce our costs. Moreover, to deliver the extended features of its product, LumoTech plans on designing more efficient hardware components tailored to its needs. The reduction in marginal cost when mass-producing components will justify the cost of this, and thus, reduce production costs noticeably. With that in mind, and after considering all the costs, we aim to have a market value much lower than most tablets available on the market. 4.4 Exit Strategy LumoTech has considered merging as its exit strategy. When LumoTech meets its profit objective, it can merge with larger companies that might be interested in manufacturing the same product. For large corporations, such as Microsoft and Apple, acquiring a smaller company such as LumoTech is an efficient method to grow revenue, rather than wasting resources to design new products. For example, in February 2015 Microsoft purchased the technology of N-Trig, the company behind the Surface Pen, for $30 million dollars, which was 3 times its revenue in the previous year [7]. In the case where business operations do not meet predetermined milestones, and capital infusion is no longer feasible to maintain operations, LumoTech will liquidize its assets to limit any further loss. 15

7.0 Conclusion StyLight is a durable, compact solution to combining the large surface area of a tablet with the communication and file sharing capabilities of a smartphone. Connecting a smartphone to StyLight will enable the modern student to project their lecture notes onto any surface, and with a specially designed stylus, write their notes onto the projected screen as they would normally on a tablet, storing the changes to the document for later studying. StyLight will be designed to automatically adjust brightness no matter what lecture hall it is used in, and auto focus its beam for clarity on all surfaces. Despite all these features, the StyLight will remain a cheaper alternative to the tablet on the market. As a group of talented and enthusiastic senior engineering students, we are committed to delivering StyLight as a product we ourselves would have used throughout university to make our lives easier. Meticulous care has and will be taken to consider all facets of usability, achieved through thorough research and relentless testing while adhering to project milestones, timelines, and budget. As a direct rival to tablets, the release of the StyLight will change the way people think of productivity technology. 19
