1 Event Summary Color Reaches New Hard-Copy Output Devices at CeBIT Abstract: Vendors promoted over 100 new or improved copiers, printers and multifunctional products at the CeBIT show in Germany. 2 2 Color Reaches New Hard-Copy Output Devices at CeBIT New Printers and Copiers at CeBIT Shrinking Budgets and Industry Consolidation At CeBIT, held in Hanover, Germany from 12 to 19 March, vendors exhibited their products to the largest gathering of IT purchasers and end users in the world. The global economic situation and the tightening of IT budgets over the past 18 months had a visible impact on this year's event. Attendance was noticeably lower than in previous years and some significant vendors scaled down their presence or elected not to attend. The major hard-copy output vendors that did attend were gathered in Hall 1 for the first time. In the outlying halls were vendors introducing low-end multifunctional products (MFPs), as well as niche and industrial printer vendors. Some vendors decided to exhibit mainly office products: for example, Xerox, which has created an office products division, chose not to exhibit its document production offerings, relying on its own DocuWorld events to promote these solutions. Output vendors' presence at CeBIT is shrinking as the market consolidates. A quick glance around Hall 1 provided a strong indication of the manufacturing powerhouses destined to remain in the office output market for the long haul. With the almost complete demise of the analog copier, the main themes were the convergence of digital copiers and printers, and the shift from monochrome to output. Color Comes to a New Product Class CeBIT allowed vendors to exhibit their position within these trends, but innovation was sparse and new product launches were low key, being mainly product range gap-fillers, updates and improvements. However, one of the most interesting product classes to emerge was the -capable multifunctional device. These are digital -capable copier/printers that have been designed for predominantly monochrome output and occasional use in a business environment. The emergence and positioning of such devices against monochrome and full-, high-quality output products will have a strong influence on the market.
