5 ABOUT THIS GUIDE This installation guide is for users of the free basic version of Pleco for Android. WHAT IS PLECO? Pleco is an all-in-one Chinese dictionary / flashcard / document-reading app. The basic version of Pleco is a free download that includes a full dictionary search engine, two free dictionaries (Pleco Basic and CC-CEDICT), a basic document reader (tap-lookup text) function, singlesyllable audio support, and no advertising. Optional paid add-on features include: Multi-syllable document-reader for translating Chinese texts word-for-word. Full-screen handwriting input for identifying hand-drawn characters (available free for a limited time). Optical character recognition (OCR) system for camera video feed translations of printed characters. FEATURES Dictionaries Two free dictionaries: a combined 130,000 Chinese words and 20,000 example sentences with Pinyin. Eleven other dictionaries available as paid upgrades. OCR The live Optical Character Recognition system lets you focus your device camera on printed Chinese characters for instant translations. Available as a paid add-on. Handwriting Input This recognition engine lets you draw characters on a multi-touch screen for accurate character recognition. Licensed from China s leading maker of handwriting input systems. Free for a limited time, then as a paid add-on. Flashcard System This self-study system supports easy tap-of-a-button flashcard creation. You can import premade word lists and test your memory with the fill-in-the-blank, tone drill, and SRS (spaced repetition) features. The simple version is free; the full feature is available as a paid add-on. Search You can find words using Chinese characters, Pinyin, or a combination of both; as well as voice input and search-by-radical. Supports wildcard and full-text searches. 5

6 Document Reader Translates Chinese-language text files sent to the clipboard. The pasteboard allows web page and (Word/RTF) document look-ups. Multi-word available as a paid add-on. Audio Pronunciation Plays over 34,000 audio recordings of Mandarin pronunciations by a native speaker. Single syllable free; multi-syllable available as a paid add-on. Stroke Order Diagrams Animates the stroke order of over 20,000 Chinese characters. Available as a paid add-on. Taiwan and Mainland Friendly Supports both simplified and traditional characters as well as Zhuyin and Pinyin search and display. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Pleco for Android works on devices running Android 2.3 or later. It does not run on earlier versions. An internet connection is required only when purchasing or downloading add-ons. Tap on your device Menu icon. 2. Press the Menu button to access Pleco s menu/navigation screen Either: a) An onscreen button: or b) A hardware button on your device panel. 3. Navigate to Play Store and tap on it. 4. Type Pleco into the search box at the top of the screen. 5. Tap the Search/Enter. 6. Tap on Pleco Chinese Dictionary. 7. Tap Install. 8. Tap Select and download. (View app download progress in the drop-down menu of the display screen. Menu will display notification when download is complete.) Go to Settings. Tap Applications. Tap Unknown sources to allow installation of non-google market applications. Type: pleco.com/getandroid in your device web browser. Tap Go/Enter. The download will begin immediately. Tap on the completed download in your drop-down notifications screen. Tap Yes when the prompt appears to install. Pleco will appear in your program launcher screen. Type: e/apps/details?id=com.pleco. chinesesystem.cn in your device web browser. Tap Install. Tap Pleco in your program launcher screen to unpack files. Tap OK. 7
