z/vm Specifics VM supports FICON attachment as 399 Model 3 or 6 Controller Native controller mode 175 supported on z/vm 5.2. with APAR VM63952 brings support on par with z/os VM simulates controller mode supported by each guest VM supports the following ECKD DASD types: 339 Models 2, 3, and 9 (including mod-27 and mod-54) 339 Models 2 and 3 in 338 track compatibility mode VM supports FCP-attached SCSI LUNs as emulated 9336 Model 2 DASD Supports 65,52 cylinder 339 Model 9 (a.k.a. model 54) and 1TB SCSI LUN VM fully supports the preferred pathing anomaly of the DS6 15

DS6 Logical Path Illustration vol vol vol vol vol vol vol vol vol vol Port B is preferred path for volumes on right side of PCI bus; Port A is nonpreferred path Port A is preferred path for volumes on left side of PCI bus; Port B is nonpreferred PCI Bus Port A Port B

z/vm Preferred Pathing Support DS6 hardware structure is such that not all DS6 ports (FICON or FCP) have equivalent access to the volumes (DASD or LUNs) Half the volumes need to be accessed by crossing a PCI-X bus This bus crossing can add 3% to the response time and reduce bandwidth by 5% For FICON connections, VM dynamically discovers which ports (paths or CHPIDs) are preferred versus non-preferred when a volume is varied online For FCP connections, preferred versus non-preferred paths must be defined on the SET EDEVICE command (or EDEVICE system configuration file statement) z/vm 5.3. will dynamically discover EDEVICE path preference at vary on For both FICON and FCP, VM contains logic in its I/O scheduler (or SCSI device driver) to use preferred paths over non-preferred paths In general, I/O will failover (i.e., be redriven) on non-preferred paths only if no preferred paths are available or functioning NEW 17

z/vm Query PATHS command QUERY PATHS command will display which FICON paths are preferred versus non-preferred when connected to a DS6 Example: q paths to 991 Device 991, Status ONLINE CHPIDs to Device 991 (PIM) : Physically Available (PAM) : Online (LPM) : Preferred : Legend + Yes - No 18

z/vm SET EDEVice Command VM emulates SCSI LUNs as 9336 FBA DASD Issue SET EDEVICE command with the 175 attribute to map a VM emulated 9336 DASD to a DS6 SCSI LUN Links LUN to VM's DS6 SCSI driver PREFerred and NOTPREFerred parameters define preferred versus non-preferred SCSI paths >>-SET--EDEVice--rdev > >---TYpe--FBA--ATTRibutes Paths --->< ADD PATH '-DELete PATH-' Paths: '-SCSI-' < < --FCP_DEV--nnnn--WWPN--wwwwwwwwwwwwwwww--LUN--llllllllllllllll--> > PREFerred---- '-NOTPREFerred-' PREF and NOTPREF not required and ignored in z/vm

z/vm Query EDEVice Command Use QUERY EDEVICE command to display what attribute (i.e., device driver) has been defined for an emulated 9336 DASD Ensure that attribute 175 is displayed for emulated 9336 DASD defined on a DS6 Use DETAILS parameter of QUERY EDEVICE to display which DS6 SCSI paths have been defined (or discovered) as preferred versus non-preferred Examples: q edev 67 EDEV 67 TYPE FBA ATTRIBUTES 175 Ready; q edev 69 details EDEV 69 TYPE FBA ATTRIBUTES 175 PATHS: FCP_DEV: B1 WWPN: 44663C223B LUN: 11 PREF FCP_DEV: B2 WWPN: 44663C223C LUN: 11 NOTPREF Ready; 2

z/vm FlashCopy Instant copy of source disk to target Guest support via CCW channel program support Restricted to dedicated or fullpack minidisks Native support via CP FLASHCOPY command Enhanced in z/vm 5.3. with Faster Performance and synchronous command operation Multiple targets from one source New QUERY VIRTUAL FLASHCOPY command Flashcopy Version 2 hardware supported NEW Dataset Relocation (data on different track offsets when moved to target) Multiple Relationships (source track can have many target tracks, but target track can have only one source track) Cross LSS (source and target can be in different logical control units) source instant copy target 21

Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (PPRC) Continuous copy of source disk changes to target Guest support via CCW channel program support Restricted to dedicated or fullpack minidisks Native support via ICKDSF Release 17 running in CMS virtual machine PPRC hardware Metro Mirror (changes from source to target synchronous to initiating I/O) Global Copy (changes from source to target asynchronous to initiating I/O; allows extended distances between source and target ) Metro/Global Copy (3 volume PPRC link; Metro Mirror link between source and intermediate volumes; Global Copy link between intermediate and target volumes; allows extended distances with added data integrity) Global Mirror (asynchronous link between source and target; software managed consistency groups allow failover to point-in-time consistent copy in case of disaster) CP QUERY DASD DETAILS command displays PPRC volume status (Primary, Secondary, or Cascading Intermediate) when a PPRC link is active for a disk source Continuous copy target 22

z/vm Parallel Access Volumes (PAV) Base volume shadowed by 1 or more Alias volumes Looks like multiple separate, real DASD to host operating system Allows concurrent I/O to Base data Greater I/O performance (throughput) by reducing I/O queuing Supported for VM guests as dedicated DASD via the CP ATTACH command or DEDICATE user directory statement Supported also for VM minidisks on z/vm 5.2. with APAR VM63952 VM provides workload balancing for guest s that don t exploit PAV (e.g., CMS) Real I/O dispatcher queues minidisk I/O across system attached alias volumes VM provides linkable minidisks for guests that do exploit PAV (e.g., z/os and Linux) New PAVALIAS parameter of the DASDOPT and MINIOPT user directory statements or the new CP DEFINE PAVALIAS command create alias DASD E1-E12 access same data minidisks (fullpack and non-fullpack) for exploiting guests base alias alias RDEV E1 RDEV E11 RDEV E12 23
