Protocols Module UFCE Topic: Protocols and More HTML Introduction This worksheet is designed to encourage you to continuing your web page writing skills. Also to give you the opportunity to use and find out more about a couple of protocols Your tutor will help you by demonstrating what is required and also answer any questions you may have. If you need help - ask. If you are curious - ask. If you want to know - ask. You are encouraged to discuss the workshop with other students in the class. Share and Learn! CEMS Systems Support You may find it useful to check 3P12 for relevant help sheets. What you must do If you think you have gone wrong at any point - ask your tutor for help Load the first HTML lecture into the web browser Find the links to Further Help (Slide 24). If you haven t already bookmarked these links your should do so now. Now make sure you can see the last (Protocols) lecture. HELP! You should check the links given in the lecture notes on page entitled "Further Help" IMPORTANT: You should get used to setting up your web pages so that they are publicly visible, therefore: 1. You must put your web pages in your public_html directory 2. You must set the file permissions using chmod as shown in the lecture 3. You must use the http: protocol NOT the file: protocol Using Lists Lists can be embedded within lists. Make a web page like the one below with an unordered list in the middle of an ordered list.
(Get the layout right first then set the colors) (Make sure you set the correct permissions (chmod) and use http) The colours used are yellow, green, red and orange. List attributes Check your web references to find attributes for list tags. Change the bullets in the unordered list using the type attribute of the tag
Next use the start attribute of the ordered list to start the numbering from (say) 6. Next change the list numbers (1,2,3..) to lowercase letters (a,b,c..) Finally use Roman numerals (i,ii,iii) Protocols It is not convenient to test using other protocols from the Unix system without going offsite. However it is possible to use the CEMS PC system to connect to the CEMS Unix system (Unfortunately these PC s can t cope with Unix to PC). When you have the chance login to a CEMS PC you can use 2 protocols - telnet and FTP. FTP You can use the FTP tool on any CEMS PC to upload a file to the Unix system. You may wish to create a simple HTML file using notepad (via the start menu) on the PC. Connect to the Unix system thus:
The Unix server milly should be shown. Then enter your Unix name and password: You can now move files between the two systems. You can upload your HTML file (e.g. next.html) to your public_html directory and view it using Internet Explorer (e.g. Telnet There is no telnet tool on the CEMS PC system but you can use it from the Command Prompt:
Type in telnet milly at the prompt: (or use Start->Run and enter telnet milly) After entering your Unix name and password you will be logged into the Unix system. You can enter all the usual Unix commands: ls cat cd pwd etc Type in exit or close down the window to quit. Cutting and Pasting on Unix (This is a lot easier than on PC Windows) wipe the required text with the Left Mouse Button (LMB) held down position the cursor using the mouse drop the text by pressing the Middle Mouse Button (MMB)
To cut and paste- wipe, position, drop
