Preface Who should read this guide IBM OMEGAMON z/os Management Console is a tool that allows you to monitor z/os data such as: v Availability data v Coupling facility status v Potential problems, using the IBM Health Checker for z/os OMEGAMON z/os Management Console is a monitoring agent that resides on managed z/os systems. You can also use OMEGAMON z/os Management Console to set threshold levels and flags to alert you when the systems reach critical points. Getting Started with IBM OMEGAMON z/os Management Console provides an overview of the OMEGAMON z/os Management Console, including information on installation and a basic configuration to get started with. It is not intended as an introduction to OMEGAMON Platform version 360. The primary audience for this book is the z/os system programmer responsible for monitoring sysplexes and the z/os systems that participate in them. It also contains information for those responsible for monitoring the health of these systems and resolving or forwarding problems. Users of this book should be familiar with the following topics: v The z/os operating system and its associated concepts v Microsoft Windows, or UNIX Transition from Candle to IBM IBM acquired Candle Corporation in June The transition of Candle ordering and service processes is complete, but as you will see in this publication, this release is part of a transition phase of this acquisition. Some Candle terminology and component names used to describe the OMEGAMON products remain unchanged in this book. However, in the coming year, many of Candle products will be acquiring new IBM names. During this transition period, some publications use the old names while others use the new names. For example, CandleNet Portal might be referred to by the new name Tivoli Enterprise Portal. The following table shows some of the upcoming name changes most relevant to the IBM OMEGAMON z/os Management Console - it is not intended as an exhaustive list of all the name changes: Table 1. Note: If you are using the bash shell on a Windows system, you can use the UNIX conventions. xvi Getting Started with IBM OMEGAMON z/os Management Console

Chapter 1. Introduction to OMEGAMON z/os Management Console IBM OMEGAMON z/os Management Console is a new member of the Tivoli Monitoring Services family of mainframe monitoring products. A sibling to IBM OMEGAMON XE, it contains a subset of that product's functions: the availability and sysplex monitoring functions. In addition, OMEGAMON z/os Management Console: v Uses IBM Health Checker for z/os to monitor systems for potential problems v Monitors IBM Health Checker for z/os itself for problems The OMEGAMON z/os Management Console displays z/os data about: v Availability, including: Operations status, including outstanding write-to-operator-with-reply (WTOR) and write-to-operator (WTO) buffers remaining Address space data Coupling facility systems data Coupling facility structures data Coupling facility paths data Paging data set data Cross-system coupling facility (XCF) systems data XCF paths data v IBM Health Checker for z/os, including status of the product and checks. IBM Health Checker for z/os identifies potential problems before they impact your availability or, in worst cases, cause outages. It periodically runs checks to look at the current active z/os and sysplex settings and definitions for a system and compares the values to those suggested by IBM or defined by you. IBM Health Checker for z/os produces output in the form of detailed messages, which you can view using OMEGAMON z/os Management Console. If IBM Health Checker for z/os finds potential problems (exceptions), you can look at the detailed exception messages on OMEGAMON z/os Management Console for information about the exceptions found and suggested actions to take. For complete information about setting up and managing IBM Health Checker for z/os, see the IBM Health Checker for z/os User s Guide. Like OMEGAMON XE, the new OMEGAMON z/os Management Console product has a flexible, easy-to-use Java-based interface called the CandleNet Portal, which transforms systems data into the business knowledge that you can use to run your enterprise. With OMEGAMON z/os Management Console, you can also set threshold levels and flags as desired to alert you when the systems reach critical points. Figure 1 on page 2 shows the CandleNet Portal application window for OMEGAMON z/os Management Console. The CandleNet Portal presents information in a single window comprising a navigation tree and a workspace: v The navigation tree in the upper left corner of Figure 1 on page 2 lights up with critical, warning, and informational alerts so you can instantly identify problems as they occur. v Workspaces such as the one shown in Figure 1 on page 2 can be divided into multiple views containing reports in the form of tables and charts, TN3270 emulator views, Web browsers, text boxes, graphic views, and event message logs. 20 v Subnodes such as the two shown in the navigation tree in Figure 1. For OMEGAMON z/os Management Console, the subnodes are AVAILABILITY and HEALTHCHECK. Figure 1. CandleNet Portal sample workspace for OMEGAMON z/os Management Console You can also use OMEGAMON z/os Management Console features to: v Monitor all systems and resources from a single, integrated browser-based interface that you can customize with filters to display only the data you want to see v Create comprehensive online reports about system conditions v Define your own queries, using the attributes provided by a monitoring agent, to monitor conditions and data and customize workspaces v Create Situations, which let you set up monitoring for particular conditions and flag the condition with an alert when detected. v Trace the causes leading up to an alert v Create and send commands to systems in your managed enterprise by means of the Take Action feature v Embed information about problem resolution in the product interface using Expert Advice, which can be edited to include knowledge and solutions specific to your environment Components of OMEGAMON z/os Management Console OMEGAMON z/os Management Console is considered a client-server-agent implementation. The major components of OMEGAMON z/os Management Console are shown in Figure 2 on page 3. 2 Getting Started with IBM OMEGAMON z/os Management Console

Figure 2. OMEGAMON z/os Management Console components The components include: v The CandleNet Portal is the user interface for OMEGAMON z/os Management Console. The portal is a thin Java application that communicates with the CandleNet Portal Server to send requests and retrieve data. You can access all CandleNet Portal function through the desktop client or an Internet Explorer browser connected to an embedded Web server in the CandleNet Portal Server. v The CandleNet Portal Server is a Java application server that enables retrieval, manipulation, and analysis of data from agents. It connects to both the CandleNet Portal and the Candle Management Server. The CandleNet Portal Server holds all the information needed to format the workspaces viewed in the CandleNet Portal. v The Candle Management Server component does the following: Retrieves data from the monitoring agents and delivers data to the CandleNet Portal Server. Sends alerts to the CandleNet Portal Server when conditions specified in situations are met. Receives commands from the CandleNet Portal and passes them to the appropriate monitoring agents. This component can be installed on z/os, Windows, and some UNIX operating systems. The hub Candle Management Server is the focal point for managing your environment. There can be only one hub Candle Management Server. It communicates with the CandleNet Portal Server, with monitoring agents, and optionally with Candle Management Servers running remotely in a hierarchical configuration. You can optionally deploy a remote Candle Management Server to distribute the workload of the hub. Depending on the complexity of your environment, the number of agents you install, and the number of situations that you monitor, you might need one or more remote Candle Management Servers. Each remote Candle Management Server must reside on its own system or Chapter 1. Introduction to OMEGAMON z/os Management Console 3

workstation and have a unique Candle Management Server name (node ID). A remote Candle Management Server communicates with the hub Candle Management Server and with monitoring agents running on the same or different systems. v Monitoring agents, such as the OMEGAMON z/os Management Console, monitor and collect data from a managed system. These agents are installed on the systems or subsystems you want to monitor and pass data to a single Candle Management Server (remote or hub). Monitoring agents monitor systems, subsystems, resources, and applications on the system where they are installed. They provide data to the Candle Management Server and receive instructions from the Candle Management Server. They are also able to issue commands to the system or application you are monitoring. Other agents include: Alert managers, which monitor alerts and relay the information from console or message logs, network management products, and system management products Alert emitters, which monitor events or exceptions in products running under the control of the Candle Management Server and relay them back for corrective action (if applicable) Gateways, which communicate events to a management application running on a supported operating system using a network service These monitoring agents run on the operating system appropriate for the system or software being monitored. OMEGAMON z/os Management Console Features The following features are available with OMEGAMON z/os Management Console and the CandleNet Portal: v Customized workspaces for each information group: CandleNet Portal retrieves data from the monitoring agent and displays the results in the workspace in the form of charts and tables. You can start monitoring activity and system status immediately with the predefined workspaces and tailor your own workspaces to look at specific conditions, display critical threshold values in red, and filter incoming data according to your needs. v Workspace views: Each workspace consists of one or more views. There are several types of views: Table views display data in table format where rows represent monitored resources and columns represent data collected for each resource. Chart views allow you to view data in graphical formats. Pie, bar, and plot charts and a gauge format are supported. Take action view lets you enter a command or select a predefined command, and run it on any system in your managed network. Message log view shows the status of the situations running on your managed network. Notepad view opens a simple text editor for writing text that can be saved with the workspace. Terminal view starts a 3270 or 5250 session for working with z/os applications. Browser view opens the integrated Web browser. v Navigator views or navigators provide hierarchical views of the systems, resources, and applications you are monitoring. Navigators help you structure 4 Getting Started with IBM OMEGAMON z/os Management Console

your enterprise information to reflect the interests and responsibilities of the user. OMEGAMON z/os Management Console comes with a default navigator called the physical navigator. OMEGAMON DE comes with the same default navigator, but allows you to create additional navigators allowing you to view enterprise information representing your business systems. v Linked workspaces: If you often go from one workspace to another, you can build a link between them to speed the transition. You can also build links that originate from a table or from a bar or pie chart, and use relevant data from the source table or graph to determine the target workspace. v Custom queries: Every OMEGAMON monitoring agent comes with a set of predefined queries. These queries tell the Candle Management Server what monitoring data to retrieve from the agent for the chart or table view. You can create your own queries to specify exactly which attributes to retrieve, thus saving valuable resources. For example, you can build a filter into the Connections query to retrieve only records from a particular remote port. Additionally, you can write SQL queries to ODBC data sources and display the results in any chart or table. This enables you to show monitoring data and data from other sources (such as third-party databases) in a single workspace. v Interaction with systems from your console: The Take Action feature lets you enter a command or select a predefined command, and run it on any system in your managed network. v Monitor system conditions and send alerts: You can use the situation editor to create situations. A situation notifies you when an event occurs on a managed system. The Candle Management Server sends an alert when the conditions in a situation are evaluated to be true.
