6 Arduino Development on Android Motivation Many industry analysts argue that tablets could eventually replace the PC However as an engineer / hobbyist a tablet is completely impractical Missing standard software tools such as compilers, git, apt-get package manager, Arm support for 3rd party software (i.e. Eagle Cad), shell scripting, etc. Missing host USB (most devices)

7 How is this possible? Discovery of Linux on Android Supports full Ubuntu (Arm) running on Android in a terminal or VNC Requires rooted device 75% of what I wanted just worked!!! However VNC was buggy or awkward to use due to touch screen mouse and desktop UI The missing 25% still made tablets impractical :-( Still missing host USB

Bluetooth device not showing up in Linux for Android Solution Write Android app that runs as a Service, connects to avrdude over TCP and Arduino over Bluetooth Amazingly avrdude already supports programming over TCP! 13 Upload with avrdude The Command avrdude -v -patmega328p -carduino -Pnet: :6800 -D -Uflash:w:.build/uno/firmware.hex:i The Procedure Start the Serial Mirror app Connect to the Bluetooth device Ensure net is listening Switch to terminal Press reset button Wait ms then start upload Timing the reset isn't as bad as you would expect Manual reset vs automatic reset Bluetooth does not break out DTR pin thus preventing automatic reset Considered adding SW reset option via watchdog timer however Most bootloaders contain Adaboot no-wait mod Lets call manual reset a security feature

(github version) Source assumes LEDs are placed in particular order Serial library Interrupts disabled and custom delay functions interfere Replaced delay_ms/delay_us with delay/delaymicroseconds Button releases are not detected right away Fixed by moving button detection to delay_ms Clock speed is 8MHz but ino build -m atmega328 assumes 16MHz Android app will need color settings since kit doesn't specify Need to find the correct target for Simon hardware Simon FTDI does not power VCC for PTH kit but does for SMD kit
