1 Instruction for Upgrade Solaris 7 to Solaris 8 By: Loc Huynh Date: 22 October Foreword This instruction lays out primary step for upgrade Solaris 7 to Solaris 8 on the Sun Ultra 10 Creator 3D. For further information, please visit 2. Collect information a. Determine the host name: uname n # uname -n totoro b. Determine the host IP: ypmatch system_name hosts # ypmatch totoro hosts totoro c. Backup the current system a. Become a superuser b. Shutdown the system by running: init 0 c. Boot the system into a single mode: boot s d. Check file system consistency by running: fsck -m /dev/rdsk/devicename e. Load the local tape drive and running: ufsdump9ucf /dev/rmt files_to_backup (for remote tape drive, running: ufsdump0ucf) f. Verify the successfully backup: ufsrestore -t 4. Upgrading a. Check for the display windows has to be at least 80 columns wide and 24 rows long: sty b. Insert a Solaris 8 Installation English SPARC Platform Edition CD into the cdrom tray c. Boot the system by displaying the OK prompt: boot cdrom We will see a display like: Boot device: /sbus/espdma@e, /esp@e, /sd@6,0:f File and args: Solaris Web Start 3.0 installer English has been selected as the language in which to perform the install. Starting the Web Start 3.0 Solaris installer Solaris installer is searching the system's hard disks for a

3 location to place the Solaris installer software. Your system appears to be upgradeable. Do you want to do a Initial Install or Upgrade? 1) Initial Install 2) Upgrade Please Enter 1 or 2 > Enter 2 for upgrade d. If you are using the Solaris 8 Installation Multilingual SPARC Platform Edition CD We will see a display like Boot device: /sbus/espdma@e, /esp@e, /sd@6,0:f File and args: Solaris Web Start 3.0 installer The Solaris Installer can be run in English, or any of the following languages: 1) English 6) Japanese 2) German 7) Korean 3) Spanish 8) Swedish 4) French 9) Simplified_Chinese 5) Italian 10) Traditional_Chinese Select the language you want to use to run the installer: Select 1 for English then we will see a display like language_you_selected has been selected as the language in which to perform the install. Starting the Web Start 3.0 Solaris installer Solaris installer is searching the system's hard disks for a location to place the Solaris installer software. Your system appears to be upgradeable. Do you want to do a Initial Install or Upgrade? 1) Initial Install 2) Upgrade Please Enter 1 or 2 > Enter 2 for upgrade e. Upgrade process will look for a swap slices, reply y if you want to use the swap slice that it found for you, else reply n then select your own slice there are a few steps to complete if you reply n. Note that: all information on this slice will be erased. Also check the minimum requirement for the space of the slice.

4 f. After reply y from above, we will see a display like The Solaris installer will use disk slice, /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s1. After files are copied, the system will automatically reboot, and installation will continue. Please Wait... mini-root to local disk...done. Copying platform specific files...done. Preparing to reboot and continue installation. Syncing file systems done rebooting... Resetting... Sun Ultra 1 SBus (UltraSPARC 143MHz), Keyboard Present OpenBoot 3.5, 64 MB memory installed, Serial # Ethernet address 8:0:20:8d:35:a5, Host ID: 808d35a5. Rebooting with command: boot /sbus@1f,0/espdma@e, /esp@e, /sd@0,0:b Boot device: /sbus@1f,0/espdma@e, /esp@e, /sd@0,0:b File and args: g. System will reboot and continue the installation h. After a reboot, you will be ask to select network i. If you answered yes, you will be ask to enter: host name; host IP (DHCP/static); netmask; Ipv6; Name Service; Domain Name (you will either specify or leave the system to find one for you, if you specify then you will be ask for the server hostname/ip) ii. If you answered no ; you will be ask to enter: hostname; host IP i. You also be ask: Time Zone; Date & Time; Root pass word; Power Management; Proxy Server j. Click Confirm for the confirmation k. Insert CD 1/2 software as requested l. Click on Upgrade Install, click Next to bypass the Backup to Media. If there is more than one version of the Solaris operating environment already installed on the system, then Select Version To Upgrade. m. Testing Upgrade dialog box will be display. At this point, Solaris Web Start tests the system you're upgrading to ensure that enough disk space is available for the upgraded Solaris software. If there is not enough disk

5 space available, Solaris Web Start displays a message suggesting that you perform an initial upgrade n. You will be ask to choose either Default Install or Custom Install o. Follow the instruction for upgrade your system as necessary. p. While finishing the upgrade, you will be ask if you want to view a log file and adding additional software q. Finally, you will be asked to reboot your server.
