3 1. Introduction This guide has been written for Durham Attack club members, to instruct you how to post your team or club news stories on our Durham Attack web site. Web technology for publishing news has advanced in the past few years, to the extent that web site development skills are no longer needed to publish content on most web sites. Blog is short for web log, which started out as a means of publishing a personal commentary on the web. It has evolved into a set of publishing tools and standards that allow anyone with simple text editing skills to publish content to a web site. To blog means to publish articles to the web. We have integrated this approach into our web site so that teams can publish their own stories as frequently as they wish. The updates to our web site that previously took the Club many hours per week during peak season can now be performed in a few minutes by those who want to publish stories. And you can publish them immediately, without waiting, using a web browser or the WordPress app on your phone or tablet. Plmasm post frmqumntly! We have removed the barriers to posting articles and we are notified the minute a new article is posted so that we can review and publish it within a few hours. This is a huge improvement from how we have updated our web site in the past. You can be on the road at a tournament such as Nationals and you can post results all you need is a phone or a web browser. You can likewise follow the progress of all of our teams on the web. The steps required to post your articles are: 1. Request access to our blogging site. We will send you a username and password 2. Login to the site 3. Use the blogging site to enter an article It s that simple. These steps are described in the following sections. Please note that the WordPress user interface changes occasionally, and the web pages may not look exactly the same as in this guide. When you publish a story it will sit in a draft state until approved. Only you and the Club can see it. Rmqumsting Accmss to our Sitm If you are the Communications Rep for your team (meaning that have volunteered to write articles about the team) or a member of our operational team then you will likely be the one that posts them on our Team Blogging site. Posting can be a very simple operation, requiring only a cut-and-paste of a title and article content. To request access to our site send an to: web@durhamattack.ca. Tell us which team you represent, and the address you will be using (if different than the address you sent the from). We will create an account for you on our web site, and our site will send you an with the username and password. 3. 6 4. Updating Your Profilm The first time that you login you will be taken to a page where you can update your profile. Change your password to something private, that you will remember. Intmrnmt Smcurity: Please safeguard your username and password. It provides access to the web site used by all our teams. 7 5. Publishing an Articlm Once you have saved your profile, and each subsequent time you visit the site and login, you land on a page containing a dashboard for Contributors. Of the options in the left margin, the only thing that we are using for teams on our site is Posts. Ignore the other options in the dashboard. To create a new post, click the Posts command. 8 You will be given a page for entering a new post (article). The page may differ slightly as we update our software, but it should look like something like below. Though there are no field names, it is simple the first two text entry areas are the titlm and the body of the article. A Subtitlm is at the bottom of the page. Enter the title, subtitle and body like in the example below. 6. Hitting thm OVA Twittmr Fmmd with Your Articlm Each article you post to our web site is automatically posted to our Facebook page and to our Twitter account. Tweets are limited to 140 characters, with a link to the rest. The OVA retweets tweets that contain their tag #OVA_updates. So, to get an article posted on our web site, posted to Twitter, then retweeted by the OVA, start your article with #OVA_updates Since it will be in the first 140 characters, it will be included in our Tweet and also picked up by anyone following us, such as the OVA. v Novmmbmr 2016 Copyright 2016 Durham Attack Vollmyball Club Pagm 8

9 Catmgorims Categories assigned to posts determine where the posts appear on our web site. For instance, if you tag the post with your team, it will appear on your team page. If you don t it won t. v Novmmbmr 2016 Copyright 2016 Durham Attack Vollmyball Club Pagm 9

10 Select the appropriate categories in the Category box at the right. Select all that apply. Tmams : Pick the Catmgorims that represent your team, like above. You must select the Tmam Nmws category for the post to appear in the team news area on our home page. Do NOT pick Club Nmws. You must select your team (e.g. Boys 14U Rmd in this example) for the post to appear in the Latest 5 Posts area of your team page. Please also select Boys or Girls under Team News, as we may use these tags in the future. Club Exmcutivm: Do not select team categories. Select the Club Nmws category so that the post appears in the club news area on our home page. Tagging You also need to tag your article to make it easier to find when searching the Internet. In the Tags area click Choosm from thm most usmd tags and select tags that describe your article and/or enter new ones. 11 Submitting Submit your article by clicking the Submit for Rmvimw button (for teams) or Publish button (for executive) on the right side of the page. This will save your article and send us an notification. We will review your post and approve it for publishing, at which point it will appear on our web site. If you are not ready yet you can save it as a draft and come back to it later, edit it, and submit it. That is it! That is all you need to do to publish a basic article on our web site. The article will be saved as a Draft. Adding a Link to a Wmb Pagm You may want to link your article to another page on the web, such as a tournament page, an OVA page, etc. To add a link to another web page, select the text in your article that will be the link, and press the Link toolbar button (which looks like a chain link). Select the text to be linked then click here to create a link to another web page You will be prompted for the URL (web address) of the page you want to link to and Title (text that appears when you mouse over the hyperlink). Enter the URL and click Insmrt. 13 8. Including Photos In An Articlm Notm: this part of our site does not appear to be working yet. Until it does, please submit your photos for our photo gallery (next section) and add a comment to your post, e.g.: [insert photo IMG1.JPG here] -- Most teams want to post a photo in their article. You should still submit your photos by ing them to web@durhamattack.org. We will add them to our photo galleries located at Instructions are in the next section. You can add an image or two to your article by clicking the Smt fmaturmd imagm command below the categories. This will allow you to upload an image for your post. Select the Upload Films option either drag and drop files onto the window, or click the Select Files button to browse and select files. Please do not add more than 2 images to your post. 14 9. Smnding Photos to Post in thm Photo Gallmry Our photo gallery is located at where the Club has more than 20,000 photos from the past few seasons. The photo gallery has been visited more than 4 million times in the past three seasons. Each team has a gallery on this site. Unfortunately it is not possible for members to post photos to this site, without giving them full access anything posted appears immediately and we need to review content before it appears on our site. To have photos posted you send them to photos@durhamattack.ca. They will usually be posted within few days. Before you send photos you should select the best ones and reduce their size. Small amounts of space are free on the internet, but something the size of our photo galleries is not. Our current photo gallery costs us a couple hundred dollars per year and it is growing each season. Please: Sort through them and only keep the best ones. Reduce the photo size to 800 pixels on the largest dimension. When saving JPG s use a quality setting of 9, so that photos are compressed. A typical 800x600 photo compressed this way is approximately 100KB. Zip all the photos into a single zip file, and send the zip file. If you follow these instructions your photos can be posted quickly. Otherwise it will cause delays in posting. If the photos are not reduced in size the may be rejected by the forwarding used for our domain, and we may not receive you photos. v Novmmbmr 2016 Copyright 2016 Durham Attack Vollmyball Club Pagm 14

15 10. Wmb Etiqumttm Please post frequently! We have removed the barriers to teams posting frequently and we will be checking our site multiple times per day to approve articles that have been posted. We expect this to be a huge improvement from how we have updated our web site in the past. You can be on the road at a tournament and post results all you need is a phone or a web browser. You can likewise follow the progress of all of our teams on the web. However, having written and posted articles on our site for five years, I can safely say that I have made all the mistakes possible! When you write and post your article please consider the following: 1. Please remember Internet safety, especially for our younger teams. Our policy is that someone surfing the web cannot associate the full name of one of our athletes with their photo. 2. Does your article make the team, every athlete on the team, and the coaches, feel good about themselvesi 3. Is your article positive and motivational (yet honest about where we would like to improve)i 4. Does the article treat all of our competitors with respecti 5. Does the article treat our officials and the OVA with respecti 6. Does your article present a positive image for our ClubI If you follow these simple rules then the articles you post will be a huge factor in promoting the success of your team and your Club. 11. Any Qumstions? The process of using these tools and posting articles can be a little intimidating. I sometimes forget this as I work in the IT field and have spent my career online and working with tools of all types.
