3 LOGGING IN/DASHBOARD To log into WordPress as an administrator, go to You will be taken to a new page that has a box that looks like this: Enter your username and password, and click the "Login" button. The page you are taken to by default is called the Administration Screen, or Dashboard. The Dashboard provides access to the control features of your WordPress installation. On the left side of the screen is the Main Navigation menu detailing each of the administrative functions you can perform. The Main Navigation in the left sidebar is what you will be dealing with the most. If you hover over each of the functions on the left, the sub-links of that function will appear. On the dashboard page, there are a few panels which allow you easy access to some of the functions. 2

4 APPEARANCE From the Presentation Administration Screen the Appearance function allows you to control how the content of your blog is displayed. WordPress allows you to easily style your site by either installing and activating new Themes or changing existing Themes. Themes A Theme is the overall design of a site and encompasses colors, graphics, and text. A Theme is sometimes called the skin. The Theme that we have installed is called MiParque. You will not need to change this theme, although it can be modified. Widgets Widgets are gadgets or gizmos that allow you to add various pieces of information to your Theme's sidebar content. The Widgets we have implemented are gtrans, Search, Recent Posts, Recent Comments, Archives, Upcoming Events, Categories and Meta. This page allows you to add, delete, and configure the Widgets used in the sidebar. Menus The Menus feature allows you to create a navigation menu of pages, categories, custom links, tags, etc. that is presented to your visitors. From the Appearance Menus Screen you can create and edit navigation menus for visitor use. You will not need to edit this page. Calendar Themes This page contains the current and available Themes for the calendar. You will not need to do anything on this page. Theme Options* The Theme Options Screen displays the settings that can be customized for a specific theme. In this case, the Theme Options is a DO NOT TOUCH option. (Theme) Editor Use the Theme Editor to edit the various files that comprise your Themes. The Appearance Editor Screen allows you to designate which theme you want to edit then displays the files in that theme. Each file (Template and CSS) in the theme can be edited in the large text box. You will not need to use the editor, and the text in these files should not be changed by anyone except a knowledgeable webmaster who has permission to do so. 3

5 PLUGINS Plugins allow you to add new features to your WordPress blog that don't come standard with the default installation. There are a variety of Available Plugins for WordPress, and with the following Screens, you can easily install and manage your Plugins. However, you will not need to deal with this page. Installed Plugins The Plugins Installed Screen allows you to view the plugins you've downloaded. Each Plugin has a corresponding description and set of options. Generally, the options can include Settings, Activate, Deactivate, Edit, Uninstall, and Delete. A Plugin can be downloaded and available on your site, but can only be seen and used if it is Activated. The active Plugins are those which have the option to Deactivate, and can also be found if you click the Active filter at the top of the page. Both the Settings and Edit options allow you to customize the Plugin. The Uninstall and Delete options allow you to get rid of a plugin. You should not need to alter any of the plugins. Add New Plugins The Plugins Add New Screen allows you to add new plugins. You should not need to deal with this. Plugin Editor Using the Plugins Editor Screen, you can modify the source code of all your plugins. You will not need to use the editor, and the text in these files should not be changed by anyone except a knowledgeable webmaster who has permission to do so. 4

6 USERS The Users page allows you to add, change, or delete your site's users. In addition, you can search for users, and you can make bulk changes and deletions to a selected group of users. The main Users page contains a table listing all users and the details about them. The table of Users contains the following columns: User Image An image or avatar for this particular user. Username - The login ID of the User. To edit any information associated with a User, click on the Username link. This will take you to a page where you can edit any pieces of the user's information. Name - The first and last names of the User. - The User's address. Role - The Role assigned to that User. The description and explanation of the Roles will be detailed in the next section. Posts - The number of Posts written by that User. Click on that number to be directed to the Posts Screen to view or edit the Posts written by this User. Roles WordPress uses a concept of Roles, designed to give the blog owner the ability to control and assign what users can and cannot do in the blog. The capabilities of each role are as follows. Super Admin - has access to the blog network administration features that control the entire network Administrator - has access to all the administration features Editor - can publish and manage all posts and pages Author - can publish and manage only their own posts Contributor - can write and manage their posts but not publish them Subscriber - can only manage their profile 5

7 TOOLS The Tools Screen contains two extra features for WordPress users: "Press This" and the Categories and Tags Converter. We will not need to deal with these tools for our website. Press This The "Press This" function allows quick posting and publishing through the use of a special web browser bookmark. You can create a shortcut to allow use of "Press This" from the new post screen. You then activate the function when browsing by selecting the favorite from your web browser favorites list. Categories and Tags Converter Use this to convert categories to tags or tags to categories. Import WordPress supports the importing data from a number external sources. In many cases, posts, comments, pages, categories, tags, and users, can be imported. You won't need to use these. The Tools Import Screen list the software packages that WordPress can import and details what types of data from each of those platforms qualifies for import. Also see Importing Content for a more extensive list of import possibilities. Export WordPress Export will create an XML file for you to save to your computer. The format, which is called a WordPress extended RSS, or WXR file, will contain your posts, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags. The Tools Export Screen guides you through the easy process of exporting your blog. Take note that the Exporting is a useful method to back up your WordPress data. 6

8 SETTINGS The Settings functions are all of the settings that define your blog as a whole: settings which determine how your site behaves, how you interact with your site, and how users interact with your site. General The General Settings allow you to control some of the most basic configuration settings for your site: your site's title and location, who may register an account at your blog, and how dates and times are calculated and displayed. Writing The Writing Settings allow you to control the interface with which you write new posts. These settings control the size of the 'post box' in the Add New Post Screen, the default Category, the default Link Category, the default Post Format, the default image sizes, and the optional Post via feature. Reading The settings in the Settings Reading Screen are few in number, but still important. You can decide if you want posts, or a "static" Page, displayed as your blog's front (main) page. You can also adjust how many posts are displayed on that main page. In addition, you can adjust syndication feed features to determine how the information from your site is sent to a reader's web browser or other applications. Discussion The Settings Discussion Screen allows you to control settings concerning incoming and outgoing comments, as well as settings concerning user avatars. Media The Media Settings allow you to determine where images, documents, and other media files will be linked to when inserted into the body of a post and to specify the maximum dimensions in pixels to use when inserting an image into the body of a post. Privacy The Settings Privacy Screen controls your blog visibility to search engines such as Google. You can decide if you would like your blog to be visible to everyone, or to not show up in Google results. You will not need to touch this. By default WordPress uses web URLs which have question marks and lots of numbers in them, however WordPress offers you the ability to create a custom URL structure for your permalinks and archives. This can improve the aesthetics, usability, and forward- 7

9 compatibility of your links." The Settings Permalinks Screen controls how the custom URL structure is defined. Calendar The Calendar Settings allow you to alter various controls and display aspects of the calendar... hide? Google Analytics Google Analytics allow you unique access to statistics regarding user traffic. The Google Analytics settings allow you a variety of controls to refine and specify what and how you want the tracked information to be gathered and stored. This page should only be altered by a webmaster. Gtrans The GTrans settings page has only a few options for you to control. Since you will not need to change or add the available languages for the site, you will not need to use this page. SEO Ultimate The SEO Ultimate Plugin Settings allow you to control your website's search engine optimization. You can also import outside data, export existing data, upgrade the plugin, downgrade the plugin, reinstall and uninstall it. These settings and options should only be utilized by a webmaster. 8

10 MiIdea (Disqus) To begin using the Disqus modifiers, simply hover over the Comments navigation tab on the side bar and then click Disqus (pronounced discuss ). Once you click Disqus under the Comments tab, you will be presented with the Disqus login page where you will enter your user info or the collective password and user name used by you and your staff. After logging into the Disqus plug-in, you will see the moderator page where you and anyone who has credentials to access and modify as well as confirm posts that are submitted via Mi Idea. 9

11 To modify or delete a particular entry from a user, simply click the check box next to the entry you would like to modify and then click one of the commands at the top of the moderator page. Currently, you should be in the green Disqus page, which is the Admin section. If you would like to view the standard dashboard, click dashboard at the top- right of the page. 10

12 PAGES When in need of adding a new page to MiParque.org, you can do so by logging in to WordPress and clicking on the Pages link on the side bar: You will be presented with a list of all the current pages that are available on MiParque.org; you are able to add and delete these pages at any time. To delete a page, simply click the check box next to a corresponding page, go to the drop down menu and select Edit or Move to Trash and click apply. To add a page, click the link in the side navigation. Note: You will not need to do either of these on a regular basis. Do not delete any pages. 11

13 POLLS To manage polls (MiVoto), simply click on the Polls tab at the bottom of the navigation bar. When selecting Polls from the sidebar, you are presented with a set of options: Manage Polls, Add Polls, Poll Options, Poll Templates and Uninstall. The only ones that are essential would be the Manage Polls, Add Polls and Poll Options. When clicking on Manage Polls, you are able to edit or delete polls that have been added through WordPress for use in Mi Voto. When clicking on the Add Poll function, this gives you the option to add an actual poll question to Mi Voto. You can also enter the selectable answers to the questions as well as other options pertaining to them. 12

14 Poll Options, Poll Templates and Uninstall WP-Polls are options that you will not need to deal with. 13

15 EVENTS To manage Events, click the Events tab on the side bar. You will see all current events by default, but if you would like to add a new event, simply click Add New below All Events. When adding a new event, add a title and give the event a description in the large text box. To modify your new event even further, scroll to the bottom of the page and key in the details regarding the event, such as the time, cost, and location details. (Do not worry about the SEO settings.) And below the Custom Fields option, you will see the Discussion options, this allows you to moderate whether or not users can comment on your event: 14

16 When you are finished modifying your event you can click Preview to see what the event looks like within MiParque.org or click Publish to post the event. If you would like to personalize the event before publishing, you have the option to add tags just below the publishing area or add this event to a specific category if need be: If you would like to create a category to organize your events, simply click Event Categories. You are able to name the event, make a slug, or URLfriendly short phrase, usually separated by hyphens, event and write a description. Once you are finished, click Add New Category. You can then select this category later when adding a new Event. 15

17 If you would like to delete your added event, click on the drop down box where your event is listed and highlight the delete option and check the box next to the event. After you have done this, click Apply : Event Tags as well as Calendar Feeds are options that you don t need to deal with. 16

18 Branding 1. Font The Mi Parque website uses Guadalupe font in the logo. The website also usues Museo Slab font in all of the header elements, however for the tagline, the font used is Lindsey. Any revisions to the logo must be approved by the organization and the original designer of the logo.
