WELCOME to NORTHERN OHIO ILLUSTRATORS SOCIETY (NOIS) Page 1
WELCOME TO NOIS This illustrated step-by-step document will serve as your guide to setting up your NOIS member web portfolio. The NOIS website is built with WordPress, which is, at its core, a blogging platform. It also has robust features that make it an easy to use Content Management System (CMS). Nearly 30% of the Web today runs on WordPress. Users can interact with the site using an administration panel that utilizes conventions that are familiar to most computer users, regardless of platform. If you are familiar with WordPress, this will be a breeze. If you are not familiar with WordPress, just follow the step-by-step instructions and you should have no problem building your portfolio. If you do have any problems, just contact the site Webmaster for help. So letʼs get started. Page 2
Logging In Go to nois.com/wp-admin Log in with the Username and Password provided to you. Both are case-sensitive. Page 3
When you first log in, you should see your Profile page. If you donʼt see this first, click Profile in the left navigation. Page 4
Scroll down to the About Yourself area. This is where you can change your password. Click on Generate Password. A new, secure password will be randomly generated for you. Please use this password or one similar that you create. These long gibberish passwords go a long way towards keeping accounts secure. It only takes one weak password to leave the entire website open to hacking. It is recommended that you copy and paste your new password into a text file and save it where you can find it and/or remember where it is. Then you can copy it and paste it in when logging in to your portfolio. Page 5
If you happen to lose your password, the Webmaster will not be able to retrieve it for you. Use the Lost Password option on the Login page. Also, keep in mind, that even if you change your password, the Webmaster, as the site Admin, will always have access to your portfolio page. There is no reason for the Webmaster to go in and edit your page unless a problem should arise. Building a Portfolio On the left navigation, click on Pages. Page 6
In the Pages list, there will only be one page, yours. If you hover over the title (your name), you will see options below it. Click Edit. Clicking Edit will take you to Page admin area. The conventions used there should look familiar. The next page calls out some functions you may need to use. Page 7
The numbers on the image below depict features as follows: 1. Page title. Your name. Donʼt change this, as it may negate your permissions to edit your page. 2. Add Media button. Click this if you accidentally delete your gallery and canʼt get it back. This is how you would create a new one. 3. Visual Mode. There are two modes within which to work. Please stay in Visual mode when interacting with your gallery. Text view is more for coders, and can be used for adding HTML code. Please only use Text view for text, and only IF you are VERY familiar with it. Otherwise, staying in Visual mode is easiest and best. 4. Edit Icons. A bank of icons, many of which should be familiar. Bold and italic text, creating links, etc. 5. Editing Window. Main editing area: your page document. 6. Preview Changes. This allows you to preview your changes in your web browser without Publishing or Updating. Be sure to click Update when you are happy with your edits. 7. Update. Click to save your changes in order to go live on the website. Page 8
Select the text in the Editing Window and write or copy-in your description. Next you will see an image in your editing area. Relax. You can delete this image, but it will have to be replaced by another image. The gallery plugin on the site will not let us save an empty gallery, so this initial image has been added as a workaround. Page 9
Click on the image to select the gallery. Click on the Pencil icon to edit the gallery. Click on Add to Gallery Page 10
Drag in images or click Select Files to navigate to them on your computer. If you do not see this pane at first, then click on Upload Files. Image Requirements (JPG, RGB) Portfolio images should be no larger than 1200px x 1200px at 72ppi (pixels per inch). Square images at 1200x1200px are fine. Portrait- or Landscape-oriented images should be no more than 1200 pixels on the longest side. That means no more than 1200 pixel height for portrait, and no more than 1200 pixel width for landscape. Higher resolution images will not look any better on screen, as browsers show images at a 1:1 ratio, or rather, pixel-for-pixel on the screen. In addition, higher resolution images carry larger file sizes that will slow the website down. The NOIS site, with all the member portfolios, has a large number of images to process and display at various times. We all want our images to be seen and that will not work with a broken site. Page 11
If you want to caption your images, just click in the area that says Caption this image When finished with your gallery additions, be sure to click the blue Update gallery button in the lower right corner. (bottom arrow) Remember that initial NOIS image? You can delete that from your gallery now. In the above image, note that the NOIS image is selected. A blue arrow (upper arrow) points to red text that reads Delete Permanently. Click on that text to delete the image. You will get a warning dialog box, but if you want to delete the image, just click OK. This is also how you would delete images that you no longer care to show. Page 12
This is important! After updating your gallery, make sure you click the Update button on your page to save all your changes. Remember, you can Preview Changes first, but ultimately, you must Update your Page to publish your changes. Member Portfolios Page The thumbnail you provided has been added to the Member Portfolios page so visitors to the NOIS site can click through to your portfolio. Conclusion Building your NOIS portfolio should be pretty straightforward and problem free, but we donʼt live in a perfect world. Things can go awry sometimes. If you should have difficulties or questions, please contact the Webmaster. Please keep in mind that options are limited to keep things usable for everyone, and to keep the site functioning properly for all. On the NOIS home page, just scroll down and on the right sidebar you will see contact information for the board members. Page 13
