UHWO Web Graphic Standards Other documents to review: UH System Graphic Standards: UH System Style Guide: If you are using WordPress, please refer to the UH West O ahu WordPress Guide for more information. Introduction Thousands of people see materials representing the University of Hawai i and its affiliated programs and groups every day correspondence, publications, websites, exhibits, merchandise, etc. Together, these representations build an identity that symbolizes who we are and what we do. An effective implementation of web graphic standards among UH West O ahu affiliated programs and websites positively reinforces the university s stature and exposure locally, nationally and internationally. Website Guidelines The design of your site should be: Clean and easy to read and navigate. A basic 1 or 2 column layout with a header area at the top and a footer area at the bottom of the page. The header should contain UH West O ahu red and the footer should be black or dark grey. Main navigation should be a horizontal bar near the top of the page, UHWO red, back or dark grey. Users shouldn t use more than 2 clicks to reach the key information. Home page or footer should include the UH West O ahu Website Disclaimer. System seal must not be degraded or visually compromised following the Graphic Standards. Offer a way for people to contact you. Clearly identify your office, unit or service. Link back to the System and campus home pages.
Use clean, hierarchical HTML markup and CSS. Remember metadata, descriptions, keywords, page title, alt text for images. Last updated (date)" info is helpful. Maintain accessibility compliance: Follow UH Style Guide for writing (or at least be consistent): Write using clear and simple language and lists when applicable (Excellent guide by DM Marketing ) Make sure all Hawaiian words are spelled correctly with proper diacritical marks: Seal and Signature: All websites representing a University of Hawai i West O ahu campus, department, program or office must indicate that the unit is part of the university. This can be done with the seal and/or signature or a tag line (e.g., "A program of the University of Hawai i" or "Provided as a public service by the University of Hawai i.") Placement can be subtle and secondary provided the viewer does not have to search to find the information. The use of the UH West O ahu Seal and Signature (the UHWO logo) may be used only: If your group/organization is officially associated (directly/indirectly) with UH West O ahu academics, student body or campus. Used in strict accordance with UH System Graphic Standards (see above link). Preferably with notification of the UH West O ahu Communication Office. Colors: The official UHWO red ink color: PMS 187 (Web HEX code: A71930). We encourage using the official red color somewhere in your site, however feel free to use other themes and colors associated with your group or program as long as the site aligns with UH West O ahu Web Graphic Standards.
Font Suggestions: Body text should be a clean san-serif font such as: Verdana, Arial, Geneva, Tahoma, etc. and the color should be black and size 12-13px. Header text should be a clean font, san-serif or serif, slightly larger than the body text and preferably black or official red (A71930). Graphics and Photography: We encourage the use of your own graphics and photography;; however standard copyright rules should apply to any images not created by you or members of your group. Images should be sized accordingly to the layout and should not exceed 72 dpi resolution to keep page loading speeds to a minimum. All images should follow standards and ethics set forth by the UH System. A photo release is required for person(s) featured in images on your microsite. A photo waiver form is included in these guidelines. Please turn them into the Communications Department prior to publication. If the subjects are under the age of 18, it's mandatory for a parent to sign a waiver or release. Site Maintenance Continue to review and manage your website and make sure it continues to meet user needs. Monitor site analytics and feedback from users (if possible). Always continue to check for broken external links in your site. Consider using a Last updated on line at the bottom of your home page. American Disability Act (ADA) Title II Considerations The following are examples but not to be considered a comprehensive list. Use text (HTML Alt tag) to describe an image for users with a vision disability. Limit using image based PDFs or use alternate text-based formats (HTML or RTF) if you do. If you include video in your site, incorporate features that make them accessible to everyone. Provide audio descriptions of images for users with vision disabilities and text captions for the deaf or hard of hearing.
Learn more about Section 508, WCAG 2.0 and other accessibility requirements for UH websites here: For a more comprehensive list of website accessibility information under Title II of the ADA visit the checklist here: Review your site for ADA compliance by using an online software or plug-in. We recommend installing the WAVE Chrome Extension. Instructions for installation are as follows: Download and install plug-in on your Chrome browser from this page: Open your microsite using the Chrome browser Click the WAVE icon on the top right of your browser window to scan your site Address any non-compliance issues highlighted in RED Consider address issues highlighted in YELLOW Or check pages for accessibility using: Website Hosting & Content Management Systems We encourage using Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress to build your site. Contact either ITS or UWHO IT to see If your website is eligible for website hosting;; otherwise there are free web hosting options available outside the University Website Disclaimer Please include the following disclaimer at the bottom of the page: The contents of this website are maintained and managed by (YOUR RESPECTIVE UNIT). The University of Hawai i - West O ahu is not responsible for the timeliness or accuracy of the content of this website.
To put on our UHWO link page (if applicable): Links to external websites are provided solely for a user's convenience. Utilization of these links is done so at your own risk and UH West O ahu is not responsible for the timeliness or accuracy of their content. Include EEO/AA statement with link to Include All rights reserved or some kind of usage policy and copyright with date Website Review and Testing All UHWO microsites are subject to a review by the UHWO Communications Department of site design in accordance with UHWO Web Guidelines. This review does not include content or information accuracy. UHWO IT will also test microsites for any security or ADA compliance issues before a site can go live.
