3 Delivery The teaching of this module will be through a combination of lectures, labs, projects and student presentations. The course intersperses a conventional lecture format providing students with an theoretical understanding of the subject with interactive workshops and labs to develop practical skills. 3

4 Course Aim & Learning Outcomes The principal aim of this course is for the students to gain practical mastery of authoring for the web. 6 Assessment Marks for this module consist of : Semester One 2 x HTML & CSS mini projects 10% each 1 x Group Presentations and documentation 10% Semester Two Website Group Project 70% 6

7 Introduction to Markup Languages Historically, the word markup has been used to describe annotation or other marks within a text intended to instruct a compositor or typist how a particular passage should be printed or laid out. E.g. wavy underlining to indicate boldface, special symbols for passages to be omitted or printed in a particular font and so forth. 7

9 Introduction to Markup Languages As the formatting and printing of texts was automated, the term was extended to cover all sorts of special markup codes inserted into electronic texts to govern formatting, printing, or other processing. So by markup language we mean a set of markup conventions used together for encoding texts. 9

11 SGML Standard Generalized Markup Language SGML is an international standard for the description of marked-up electronic text. More exactly, SGML is a metalanguage, that is, a means of formally describing a language, in this case, a markup language 11

12 SGML SGML allows you to define your own tags, each of which is used to mark a particular sort of document element, such as a paragraph, section heading or a list. In SGML defining a tag consists of giving it a name and some attributes and specifying some restrictions on the context in which the tag can be used. Let s look at an example... 12

13 SGML In SGML the structure of a document in defined in the Document Type Definition (DTD). A DTD describes how a document can be structured. Let s take a look at what a DTD might look like for our example... 13
