8 8 LessonVUE User Guide Chapter 1: Introduction Overview of LessonVUE LessonVUE is a completely integrated component of the Grade Book module that helps school districts streamline the process of instructional management without adding additional burden to teachers. LessonVUE allows districts to manage curriculum by creating a consistent framework of courses, units, lesson plans and supplemental materials, aligned to standards, tied to courses or grade levels and taught by all teachers in the district. Students benefit from a consistent educational experience regardless of what teacher they are assigned to. The district is able to: Measure and track student progress Measure effectiveness of curriculum and lesson plans Adjust teaching strategies to ensure students are achieving LessonVUE is configurable such that the district, schools, or teachers can create curriculum and customize curriculum maps, depending on an individual district s needs. LessonVUE enables a curriculum team to: Create unlimited elements with an associated library of resources Define unit, topic, lesson, and intervention method structures from a district level Align curriculum elements to standards Create an unlimited number of curriculum maps by course, subject or grade level Customize and personalize district curriculum maps to fit individual teaching styles Create Grade Book assignments directly from curriculum elements Perform cost / benefit analysis of instructional materials Curriculum managers use this guide to create: Custom templates that promote a consistent look-and-feel among all curriculum elements. Curriculum elements Curriculum maps Use this manual after LessonVUE has been set up and configured by the administrator using the LessonVUE Administrator Guide. Some common terms used throughout the guide are: Element a curriculum element such as a lesson plan or intervention Standard a curriculum standard such as a strand or concept from the Common Core Template a form that indicates the format for the content of an element Material a resource such as a physical item like a projector or an electronic resource such as a PowerPoint presentation that is needed for an element Map an outline of when elements should be taught by either subject or course Edupoint Proprietary and Confidential

9 LessonVUE User Guide Chapter 1: Introduction 9 Implementation Considerations Prior to configuring and implementing LessonVUE, the following issues should be decided within the district: How will the elements of the curriculum be organized? Within LessonVUE, any number of curriculum elements can be stored. Each district should discuss whether to store information by units or lesson plans, or both. Should other curriculum elements such as interventions, modifications, or testing days be included? Also, what will be the duration of each element? Should each element be a day s worth of material, a week, or a term, or all of the above? Elements can also be linked so that subparts of an element can be associated with an overall element (child and parent curriculum elements). How will each element be formatted? For each type of element a district decides to include, a template can be created to set a standard format to the element. How should each element be formatted, and what information should be included about each element? For example, should a lesson plan include the modifications available for the plan, or should those be a separate element? How will the materials linked to the curriculum elements be managed, and which ones should be tracked in LessonVUE? What materials will be cataloged? For curriculum elements such as lesson plans, the element may require additional materials such as a projector or flash cards to be included in the plan. LessonVUE can track these materials at the district level. Should only shared materials such as a laptop cart that needs to be reserved be tracked at the district level, or should the materials list also include teacher-specific materials such as a teacher-created presentation? Will curriculum maps be created by subject or course, or both? Each curriculum map can either outline the course of study by subject and grade level, or it can be specific to a course. What elements will be included on district curriculum maps? Curriculum maps are as varied as each district. Some districts create maps with just the standards while others offer detailed maps specifying lesson plans for each day. What elements and/or standards will be included on your district s maps? 15 Chapter 2: Templates Overview of Templates 16 Defining Templates 18

16 16 LessonVUE User Guide Chapter 2: Templates Overview of Templates Curriculum templates are used to provide a consistent format for defining the information contained in LessonVUE. Each template is used to define a different part of the curriculum that can then be shared with teachers across the district and/or placed on a curriculum map. Each district can create as many templates as needed. By default, LessonVUE has five blank templates. Each district can choose to add formatting to each of these templates, change the names, or delete them. The default templates are: Units used for creating lesson units that identify particular content to be taught and goals for learning outcomes Topic used to add a subject or topic to a curriculum map Lesson Plans used to create lesson plans Events used to define when events occur such as assessments or testing days Intervention used to indicate what interventions are available. For example, behavioral or academic. Templates can be as detailed or as simple as a district prefers. They can provide a detailed form for staff to enter the information, or they can be just a simple placeholder to indicate the type of curriculum element. For example, the Lesson Plan template below is a detailed form requiring several details about each lesson plan. Sample Template For an event such as a benchmark testing day, the template may be blank since all that is required is the name of the event. Edupoint Proprietary and Confidential
