3 The Course Navigation Menu When you first log into your course, you will land on the Course Home page, which contains announcements for your course, in addition to other alerts and notifications. To the left of your screen, you will find the course navigation menu, which you will use to access the various features of your course. On the next page, we will highlight specific aspects of the course navigation menu Laureate Education, Inc. 3 of 13

4 In the first section of the course navigation menu, you will find all pertinent information related to your course, including your course syllabus, a course introduction, the Class Café, where you can introduce yourself to your fellow classmates, and a Contact the Instructor area, where you can post important questions about the course that your classmates can see. In addition, this section contains important information about Walden s academic policies. Within your course, this section of the course navigation menu may contain additional items to provide you more information about particular assignments or other aspects of your classroom experience Laureate Education, Inc. 4 of 13

5 In the next section of the course navigation menu, you may access the Weekly Dashboard (described in more detail on the following pages), as well as links to submit any Assignments or Projects, participate in Discussions, and/or complete any assigned Quizzes or Exams. 6 The Weekly Dashboard Overview When you click on Weekly Dashboard in the course navigation menu, the following calendar layout will appear in your course window. This is the Weekly Dashboard for a typical course: You will note that the title of the week appears across the top, with each day of that week appearing in its own column beneath. Within the column for the day, you may find one or more icons. Each icon represents a different type of assignment. Please refer to page 9 of this guide for more information about each icon type. At the bottom of each Week s Dashboard is a bar that contains several informational and navigational items. From left to right, the following items appear: Throughout the Week Progress Reset Weekly Introduction and Objectives icon Select the Week dropdown menu 2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 6 of 13

7 The Throughout the Week feature is used when there are items in a particular week that you need to review or complete but that are not necessarily tied to a specific day, or that may span multiple weeks. The following screenshot depicts a week in which there are three required readings that may be completed at some point during the week and a required assignment that is due in the following week of the course. Next, the Progress feature indicates your completion of items throughout the week. See page 11 for an explanation of how to advance the progress bar. The next item along the bar is the Reset feature. Clicking this feature once will clear all progress for the week. Please Note: If you click the Reset item more than once, the progress for the entire course will be reset Laureate Education, Inc. 7 of 13

8 Next, clicking on the Weekly Introduction and Objectives icon will display a new window (refer to the screenshot below the menu bar) that contains a description of the week s content, as well as a list of what the students will accomplish that week. Finally, to navigate to another week within the course, click on the dropdown menu under Select the Week, and the Weekly Dashboard will then display the selected week s calendar view Laureate Education, Inc. 8 of 13

9 Icons Found Within the Dashboard The icons found within the Weekly Dashboard represent items to be completed within each week. These are icons that you may see in your course: Readings Exam Media Quiz Discussion Project Assignment Weekly Introduction and Objectives (found only in the bottom menu bar within the Weekly Dashboard) 2013 Laureate Education, Inc. 9 of 13

10 Function of the Icons Within the Weekly Dashboard, each icon has a number associated with it that indicates how many of each item is assigned. Once you have completed all items within a selected icon, the numbers will disappear and the item will become grayed out, as follows: Please also note that if you go to a week for the first time and find an icon grayed out, as in the example above, this indicates that the item contains one or more optional resources or activities. Be sure to click on every icon within the week to ensure that you have completed all items. 11 Tracking Your Progress When you click on an icon within the Weekly Dashboard, a window will pop up and present the information contained within that element, which may be an activity to complete or a resource to review. You will note that, to the left of each item contained within that pop-up window is a check box (noted in this screenshot by the red arrow). When you have finished each item, click the box to mark it as complete. For each item you mark as complete, your Progress bar will advance Laureate Education, Inc. 11 of 13

12 Featured Media Some courses may contain an additional column for Featured Media. This screenshot depicts the Weekly Dashboard for a course containing Featured Media: Featured Media are supplemental to any required media found within the week. They are intended to highlight particular experts in the field or provide an enhanced understanding of a subject matter. To access Featured Media, click on the thumbnail for the video you wish to view. A media player will then pop up and present the selected media Laureate Education, Inc. 12 of 13

13 The Weekly Checklist In the top bar of the Weekly Dashboard, you may find one or more icons to the right of the week s title. Clicking on the check mark symbol will open up the checklist for the week. This weekly checklist contains all of the resources (readings and media) and all assignments for the week. The checklist is provided as a handy resource for you to print out, save, and use as you see fit. In addition, you can download a.zip file of any weekly items, including the checklist PDF, any media transcripts, and other linked documents within the course. Print your weekly checklist.
