From the exhibicon of the Mogao Caves and the website of the exhibicon, Cave Temples of Dunhuang*, let s start the exploracon of informacon related to the Silk Road though the Ge#y Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN). h=p:// Image source: Captured from: h=p:// exhibicons_events/exhibicons/cave_temples_dunhuang/index.html 2
Ge#y Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN) and other GeRy vocabularies are available in mul7ple formats -- Let s see how to use them through three examples 1 HTML 2 XML 3 RDF 2016 J. Paul Getty Trust, author: Gregg Garcia. For educational purposes only. Do not distribute. 3

Procedures (for example 2) (1) Obtain the "Silk Road" ID from TGN; (2) Using the ID to request through Ge=y Vocabularies Web Services APIs* to get data of locacons related to the "Silk Road ; obtain the datasets in XML format; (3) Extract preferred name, non-prefer name, type of place, and Coordinates from XML file; store data in the PostgreSQL spacal database; (4) Present data on and interact with the defined geographical area on the map using Google Map API. *The data files may be accessed through Web services APIs (applicacon programming interfaces), which provide access to data that is refreshed every two weeks. Note that the data is subject to frequent addicons and updates. 19
Example 3 Find certain place types around the Silk Road through a LOD Sparql Query plaiorm h=p://vocab.ge=y.edu/ I would like to get something like caves on or around the Silkroad", or, "UNESCO Heritage sites on or around the Silkroad". All these place types are defined in the Ge=y Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) ancient sites aat: rock-cut architecture aat: World Heritage Sites aat: historic sites aat: caves aat:
1 Go to: h=p://vocab.ge=y.edu/ 2 Choose Queries
Query a specific place type (e.g., caves) in a geographic boundary 5 Replace the place type you choose, put your geo coordinators select discnct * {?place skos:inscheme tgn: ; gvp:placetype (gvp:placetype/gvp:broadergenericextended) [rdfs:label "caves"@en]; foaf:focus [ontogeo:within( )]; gvp:preflabelgvp [xl:literalform?name]; gvp:parentstring?parents} 22
Query a specific place type (e.g., caves) in a geographic boundary Got the results & downloadable datasets: 6 Caves within( ) 23
Query a specific place type (e.g., World Heritage Sites) in a geographic boundary. Got the results & downloadable datasets: World Heritage Sites within ( ) 24
Summary 1. Learn through TGN Website h=p:// (Anyone can do!) 2. Following these geographic places located on the Silk Road, using the geo- coordinators TGN provided, get them on the map (through TGN s API)*. (Need someone who can play with API and write a li=le bit Java.) The APIs are available to any insctucon having a login, which may be obtained by wricng to vocab@ge=y.edu. See details in the Web Services User's InstrucCons (PDF). 3. Find certain place types around the Silk Road through a LOD Sparql Query plaiorm h=p://vocab.ge=y.edu/ (Anyone can use the template to query; follow our simple demos; some knowledge of SPARQL queries will be ideal.) *The data files may be accessed through Web services APIs (applicacon programming interfaces), which provide access to data that is refreshed every two weeks. Note that the data is subject to frequent addicons and updates. 25
