2 To have access to lspac (LIBSYS Public Access Catalogue), enter your ID (Membership identification) and password, if any, lspac provides for the following options : Bibliographic searches Journals Recent arrivals Circulation status Change password BIBLIOGRAPHIC SEARCHES On-line searches can be made on two databases, namely a) Books and other material b) Articles. On both of these databases, either catalogue/indexes or word based searches can be made. CATALOGUE/INDEXES These can be positioned anywhere by entering as many characters of the corresponding bibliography information as known. On positioning, ten entries are displayed. The catalogue/indexes can be browsed further by using PgUp or PgDn or Up/Down arrow keys. To see the complete bibliographic details of a title, bring the cursor against the corresponding entry and press Return key. The bibliographic details of next or previous title in the catalogue can also be seen by using Up/Down arrow keys. If there are more than one card for a title, Left/Right arrow keys can be used to see next or previous card respectively. Following catalogues/indexes are available: Author Title Classified Subject : Arranged alphabetically by personal and corporate author name. : Arranged alphabetically by title name and series : Organized list of class numbers as per the Classification rules (UDC/DDC). Positioning can be done more precise by entering first three characters of author name also. : Alphabetic list of subject headings along with count of titles under each heading. The titles under a particular subject can be seen on further selection. LIBSYS Ltd. 1

3 WORD BASED SEARCHES Word based searches can be made either by KWIC index or based on strategies using boolean operations. On entering strategy, it gives the count of titles satisfying the same. The search results can be seen by pressing Return key, where ten entries are displayed. The list can further be browsed by using PgUp or Pg Dn or Up/Down arrow keys. To see the complete bibliographic details of a title, bring the cursor against the corresponding entry and press Return key. The bibliographic details of next or previous title in the list can also be seen by using Up/Down arrow keys. KWIC : Based on keywords in context in title. It could either by a complete word or word ending by? implying right truncation, or a phrase. Boolean searches: Simple or complex searches can be made on combination of words or phrases from any of the searchable bibliographic fields such as title, authors and subject headings/keywords. Following may be used in forming a search strategy: Key words : Consisting of a word or a phrase. Boolean connectors : following can be used - OR - To group synonyms terms when at least one must be present. This option increases the number of hits & broaden the scope of search. e.g. Heart OR Cardiac AND - To connect terms when both must be present. This option narrows the scope of search. E.g. Heart AND Cardiac. AND NOT - To eliminate data containing specified term. e.g. HEART AND NOT CARDIAC Truncation : The use of question mark (?) at the end of a word stem retrieves variations in word endings. e.g. NETWORK? would retrieve titles which have Network or Networks or Networking as keyword in any of the searchable fields. Use of parentheses : Complex search strategies can be made by use of parentheses. e.g. (IBM OR PC) AND (UNIX OR XENIX) LIBSYS Ltd. 2

4 Proximity Connector : Proximity connector is used to retrieve terms which must be adjacent to each other in specified order. e.g. Uses [1W] computer, would retrieve titles having uses of computer or Uses for computers etc. In any of the searchable fields. Use of N instead of W would make order insignificant. I.e. Uses[1N] computer would also retrieve Computer in uses. Boolean Connector as part of Keyword : When any of the Boolean connectors is part of the keyword, use * before the connector. i.e. Storage and Retrieval should be entered where Storage and Retrieval is the keyword. Search on Specific Field : In Boolean Searches, if a keyword is to be searched from a particular field, prefix the same with the corresponding field indicator as follows : i.e. TL= Molecular, would search only in title field. AU= MARTIN, would search only in Author field. To search only in subject field, prefix the term with SU= OR KW=. JOURNALS Information on journals subscribed or received on gratis/exchange including details of last issue received, holdings of bound volumes and loose issues can be seen. Journals can be listed out either alphabetically based on their name or by broad subject. RECENT ARRIVALS List of recent additions of books and other material to library collection during last period can be seen. The issues of various journals received during last period can also be seen. CIRCULATION The exact status of items meant for circulation can be seen. Borrowed Items/Reserves : List of items issued and reserves made by the borrower who has login to the lspac can be seen with this function. LIBSYS Ltd. 3

5 Item status/reserves : Status of various copies and the reserve status on a specific title can be seen with this function. Status of a particular item can be seen as on shelf / issued / in bindery, etc. CHANGE PASSWORD Users may change their password from time to time to avoid access of their records by any other user.
