WS 2 SCHEDULE INTRODUCTION CATALOGUES: OBJECTIVES ORGANISATION DISTRIBUTION ROLES REVISION
INTRODUCTION + Information = + difficult to find Library: Metaphor for accumulation and management of knowledge about people, places and things. Since always, they have employed classifications systems. The catalogue is the critical part in a library to its navigation and use. In GI context, metadata are served through a user-accessible Catalogue of geospatial information.
INTRODUCTION proposal: Member States shall establish and operate a network of the following services: (a) discovery services making it possible to search for spatial data sets and spatial data services on the basis of the content of the corresponding metadata and to display the content of the metadata; (b) view services...; (c) download services...; (d) transformation services...; (e) invoke spatial data services services...
Different names: Catalogue Services (OGC) Spatial Data Directory (ASDI) Clearinghouse (US FGDC) Same goals: Discovering geospatial data through the metadata properties they report. Integrate these services with web mapping, live access to spatial data, etc.
Organisational approach Data set: specific packaging of GI provided by a data producer or software (feature collection, image, coverage...) Metadata: a formalised set of descriptive properties shared by a community. Metadata Entry: a set of MD that pertains specifically to a Data Set. Catalogue: Single collection of MD Entries that is managed together. Catalogue Service: a service that responds to request for MD in a catalogue that comply with certain browse or search criteria.
Organisational approach Catalogue Entry: a single MD entry made accessible through a catalogue service or stored in a catalogue. Service Entry: the MD for an invokable service or operation.
Distributed catalogue concept. Catalogue Gateway and its user interface allow a user to query distributed collections of geospatial information through their MD descriptions. Process: User interested fill out a search form specifying queries for data. The search request is passed to the catalogue gateway and pose the query of one or more registered catalogue servers. Each catalogue server manages a collection of MD entries Within the MD entries there are instructions on how to access the spatial data being described.

PROPOSAL Minimum search criteria: a) Keywords; b) classification of spatial data and services; c) spatial data quality and accuracy; d) degree of conformity with the harmonised specifications provided; e) geographical location; f) conditions applying to the access to and use of spatial data sets and services; g) the public authorities responsible for the establishment, management, maintenance and distribution of spatial data sets and services.
