Login 1.1 Scheme The K-PION service is accessed via an authorized IP address. 1.2 Use of Service URL of Service URL of KIPO(Korean Intellectual Property Office) How to access the K-PION service New users are required to officially request for the IP address of their computers to be authorized for access to the K-PION service. Alternatively, they may request for an ID and Password to gain temporary access to the K-PION service for test purposes. Current users need not contact the KIPO if they have no problems with their access History of the K-PION Service 2005 A function was added to enable users to retrieve Patents and Utility Models gazettes by entering the application, examined, unexamined, or registration number of the gazettes A function was added to enable users to retrieve the file wrapper documents of Patents and Utility Models by entering the application, examined, unexamined, or registration number of the file wrapper information A function was added to enable users to perform English search queries (combination of keywords and Boolean operators) on KPAs (Korean Patent Abstracts) A function was added to enable users to search Patents and Utility Models gazettes, using English keywords -Provided the English machine translation of a Korean search result obtained through a Query

Prior to the QE process, the entered English search keywords are translated into Korean, which brings to the Korean search result. -Provided the existing file wrapper information, KPAs, and a publication link service for search results -Provided a PDF download service for official gazettes (Patents/Utility models) and KPAs -Provided an improved error reporting function designed for improving the user s convenience -Established a K-PION channel to facilitate active and efficient communication between the users and the providers of the service (Q&A, FAQ, POLL) -Restructured into a user friendly UI screen 2009 The 2009 version, in addition to already existing functions, now provides a service which enables users to search PCT applications whose languages are Korean, design applications and trademark applications, an personalization service, and a official gazettes mailing service tailored to field of a user s interest -Provide a design search service which enables users to search design file wrapper with the design case numbers and official gazettes with many types of keywords -Provide a trademark search service which enables users to search trademark file wrapper with the trademark case numbers. - Provide a PCT application search service which enables users to obtain basic information by entering the PCT case numbers and dates (i.e., international application number, filing date, publication number, and publication date), PCT history information, provided that the KIPO is appointed as RO/ISA/IPEA, the original Korean text of a PCT applicatin and its translation, and publications (WO). Additionally, a search service for Korean patent applications linked with a PCT applications and a WIPO PATENT SCOPE link service for the related documents are provided. - Provide a personalization service including a blog, a mailing service of official gazettes tailored to field of a user s interest, a user s Q & A service, a user s own service search history, memo records of a user s search formula, search for a user s search formula records, and bookmark Disabled Time of Service The K-PION service is scheduled to be down on Sundays during 00:00~14:00 and 21:00~24:00 (Korean Time) for routine database back-up.

7 1.3 Image Viewer & Elements Login Users with authorized IP addresses are not required to login to see the K-PION service search page. Typing the K-PION URL into their web browser takes them directly to the K-PION search page. IP address authorization can be obtained by contacting the KIPO at Users without an authorized IP addresses on typing the K-PION URL into their web browser will be directed to the K-PION login screen (i.e. Image 1-1), where they will be required to enter an ID/Password to access the K-PION service. 8 2. Patent/Design/Trademark Search 2.1 File Wrapper Search Scheme The search results consist of three sections: Bibliographical Data, Transaction History and Publication Document. The first section shown as Bibliographical Data provides bibliographical data and KPA documents(only for Patents): the second section shown as Transaction History provides examination history and relevant documents: while the third section shown as Publication Document (with the exception of trademark) provides original Korean texts and their English translations either on the web or in PDF format. Search results, both file wrapper information and transaction histories can be viewed in either Korean or machine translated English. 15 i) Error Report (enables users to report confusing, incomplete, or incorrect translation) [Image 2-6] File Wrapper Search Error Report Screen when mousing over a translation [Image 2-7] File Wrapper Search Error report The Error Report Tool enables you to send your opinions and/or suggestions concerning any problems you may have with the English translations. In using the Error Report Tool you are required to mouse over the specific area where, for example, a non-

16 understandable English sentence is placed for 1 second. After 1 second, the Error Report Tool pops up as is shown in image 2-6. Clicking on the or button, causes the Error Report Tool to be expanded to allow the user to fill in what he wants to, as is shown in Image 2-7. The original Korean text is provided under Original Korean Text and the automatically translated English sentence is provided under <Your suggestion>. By clicking on the button, you can delete the contents of <Your suggestion> ; by clicking on the button after inputting your opinion under <Your suggestion>, the error report is submitted; and to close the Error Report Tool, click on the button. In case there is an English text in the Original Korean Text box, the English text is obtained by pre-processing. i) Indication of Original Korean Text Corresponding to Non-registered words [Image 2-8] File Wrapper Search Indication of Original Korean Text corresponding to Non-registered words Non-registered words (words that could not be translated) are indicated by special symbols ***. By mousing over the English sentence that includes the non-registered words, for about 1 sec., the Error Report Tool pops up as is shown in image 2-8 while its original Korean text is shown in red as in Image 2-8.

17 ii) Cited Document Link [Image 2-9] File Wrapper Search Cited Document Link The K-PION service provides Korean to English translations of Korean official gazettes cited in a Prior art Search Report, Notification of Reasons for Refusal, and Notification of Decision to Grant a Patent by directly linking the KR (Korea) citation of the documents with the appropriate Korean official gazette. The KR citation of the documents is as shown in red in Image 2-9. By clicking on the KR citation, the relevant Korean official gazette is translated into English by the translation engine and the translation results are as shown in Image In case the citation of the documents is foreign documents which are saved in the system, the relevant foreign documents are provided as a pop-up image.

22 9) Viewing English Gazettes [Image 2-14] File Wrapper Search Search for English Gazette Clicking will present you with the English language translation of the corresponding Gazette entry. To zoom into the drawings, either roll your mouse over the drawing or click on it to view it in a separate window with appropriate navigation tools. PCT Search 3.1 File Wrapper Search Scheme Starting from 2009, you are allowed to retrieve PCT applications of which the receiving office (RO) is Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and the language is Korean. The search results consist of three sections: Bibliographical Data, Transaction History and Publication Document.
