6 03/2014 Chapter 1 - Introduction CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION SER System and SER Application Sequence of Events Recorder (SER) is a tool for performing root-cause analysis on electrical systems that encounter a chain-reaction of outages or other events. SER is both a system and an application program. The SER system is the composition of event-logging & time-stamping devices, data network components, and PC clients plus PC servers, integrated into a single functional package. This integral system collects, time-stamps down to the millisecond, and stores two-state discrete events for the purpose of root-cause analysis. The accuracy of the timestamps is reliant on timing signals received from the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system. The application program is the software components, working in conjunction with the PC client and server machines, to gather and store events on server machines and to provide event viewing, sorting, and filtering on client PCs. About this Instruction Bulletin This instruction bulletin focuses on the SER application program. It covers... Installation of Sequence of Events Recorder (SER) application program Connection and configuration of device communication with SER application program Viewing and interpretation of events on the SER viewers Assumptions and Guidelines The following assumptions and guidelines are presumed... Users of the product and readers of this document are familiar with Microsoft Windows and how to use Microsoft Windows controls, such as text edit boxes, popup menus, etc. Users of the product and readers of this document are familiar with a general understanding of Microsoft web clients and servers and how to use them. 12 03/2014 Chapter 4 SER User & Admin Account Assignments CHAPTER 4 SER USER & ADMIN ACCOUNT ASSIGNMENTS The following sections identify how to setup SER user & administrative accounts. In order to monitor and view events, a user account must be set up and assigned to the SER Administrative Group or SER Users Group. SER Users and Administrators have the ability to view the Monitor and Diagnostic tabs of an SER application. Only SER Administrators and not SER Users have access to the Setup page. To configure an SER application, administrative privileges must be established by adding the user to the SERAdmin group. Note: this section demonstrates setup of local users only, as opposed to domain users. Overview The first step to setting up either an SER user account or SER administrative account is to add a local (or domain) user account to the host computer, on which the SER server resides. The second step is to assign the user to either an SER users group or SER administrators group. The user may be assigned to both accounts. Note: a local user or group is an account that can be granted permissions and rights from the host computer. Local users and groups are an important security feature because you can limit the ability of users and groups to perform certain actions by assigning them rights and permissions. A right authorizes a user to perform certain actions on a computer. Where to Assign SER User & Administrative Accounts Click Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management, to activate the dialog box for user setup and assignment to group(s). This action activates the Computer Management dialog box, similar to the first figure illustrated on the next page In the Computer Management tree view, click (if not expanded) the System Tools node to expand. 44 03/2014 Chapter 8 Advanced Configuration Options CHAPTER 8 ADVANCED CONFIGURATION OPTIONS SER has advanced options which are not available out of the box. These options are detailed in this section. Each option can be turned on or off by editing the proper configuration file. The following options can be configured in the SER Setup Web.config file found at the proceeding location: <Drive>:\Program Files\Schneider Electric\StruxureWare Solutions\Websites\SerConfig\Web.config Advanced Event Edit Mode The Advanced Event Edit Mode allows SER to add or delete manual PLC events. These events can be used to reference specific device registers which SER by default cannot access. Open the Web.config file and search for the <add key="advancedeventeditmode" value="false" /> Change to <add key="advancedeventeditmode" value="true" /> o Note: By default its set to false. Save the file Open a new browser session and connect to the application Two additional options will now show in the Events tab if you choose a PLC device New custom events can now be added to and deleted from the PLC device Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 44

45 03/2014 Chapter 8 Advanced Configuration Options Daylight Savings Time (DST) Per Device Option Warning This option must be enabled with absolute care and understanding of the following risks: If a physical device time is not updated on the exact time which Daylight Savings Time applies, there may be missing or overlapping data if events or alarms occur during that time period. This option assumes that the user is responsible for inconsistent data caused by the abuse of enabling or disabling this option. In other words, if the option is enabled/disabled several times for whatever reason, the resulting inconsistent event or alarm data will be the responsibility of the end user. If data becomes inconsistent from the Daylight Savings Time change, the Sequence of Events will become difficult to determine. If missing or overlapping data has occurred then determining the sequence may be impossible. It is recommended to use Standard Time, unless it is absolutely essential that data be received in Daylight Savings Time Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 45

46 03/2014 Chapter 8 Advanced Configuration Options By default, SER assumes information from devices will be received in Standard Time. This means that the physical devices will not send timestamps with local Daylight Savings Time. The Time is converted in the software to display in the Monitoring page with Daylight Savings Time applied. However, if event or alarm data must have incoming Daylight Savings Time timestamps then this option is available per device. Open the Web.config file and search for the <add key=" DSTOptionEnabled" value="false" /> Change to <add key="dstoptionenabled" value="true" /> o Note: By default its set to false. Save the file Open a new browser session and connect to the application The DST Enabled option will now be on the View Devices and the Edit Devices screens for each device 2014 Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 46

47 03/2014 Chapter 8 Advanced Configuration Options On the Edit Devices tab the user can toggle on or off the DST flag for any device which will have incoming Daylight Savings Time timestamps. Note: Remember to go to the System tab and restart to the PLOpcAELogger service to apply any changes made to device settings Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 47

58 03/2014 Appendix C Notes on SER Installation Details about SER Installation The SER 8.0 Install will attempt to detect the following applications. 1..Net Framework V Advosol OPC Core Components If one of the above components is not found, SER 8.0 setup attempts to install them from the SER Media. The install will also add two new groups to your local computer - SERAdmin and SERUser. In order to perform certain setup and administration tasks using the SER web site, a user must be a member of the SERAdmin group or must be an administrator on the server machine where the SER application is installed. In order to log certain system events in a consistent manner the install will also change the system Application and System log size to at least 1024 kb and set them to overwrite events as needed. After the install is completed the web site should be present in the selected directory. The SER service files are located in the specified destination folder under SER. Links to the SER application and the User Guide will be added to the All Programs section of the Start Menu under Schneider Electric, StruxureWare Solutions. Note: SER software uses TCP port 502 to communicate with devices which are part of the system. Traffic on this port from the server is normal and required in order for the system to work properly. Firewalls which block port 502 between the server and devices will prevent the server from reading events on those devices Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 58

64 03/2014 Appendix F Database Maintenance Utility APPENDIX F Database Maintenance Utility Overview The Database Maintenance Utility is a set of SQL scripts scheduled to run daily as a Windows scheduled task. These tasks are installed during the SER install to facilitate the maintenance of the various databases associated with Schneider Electric products. Maintenance Scripts Schedule Tasks The scripts associated with the database maintenance tasks are located in the DBMaintenance directory. To change the directory for the backup or some other aspect of the maintenance tasks, edit the scripts in the subdirectory associated with the particular task. All tasks associated with the Database maintenance are scheduled to run once per day during the early morning hours. Database Backup Backup databases Log Backup Backup log files Rebuild Index Rebuild table indexes Reorg Index Reorganize Indexes ShrinkTranLog Shrink Transaction Log TrimDiagnosticLogTable Remove old diagnostic events. By default this task leaves 1,000,000 records for diagnostic events. This is the maximum recommended value as more than this may cause performance degradation. To change the number of records to keep, edit the TrimDiagnosticLogTable.sql file. TrimEventsTable Remove old monitoring events. By default this task leaves 2,000,000 records for monitoring events. This is the maximum recommended value as more than this may cause performance degradation. To change the number of records to keep, edit the TrimEventsTable.sql file Schneider Electric. 66 03/2014 Appendix G Installing an SER System - Overview APPENDIX G INSTALLING AN SER SYSTEM OVERVIEW Table 6, Installing & Setting Up an SER System 1. Mount and setup event-logging and time-stamping devices and wire to appropriate automated electrical or mechanical equipment, such as circuit breakers, circuit relays, flow valves, etc. The event-logging and time stamping devices capture, log, and time-stamp events that occur within an electronically automated circuit breaker, circuit relay, flow valve, or any other piece of electronically automated equipment that generates operational, twostate discrete data. An event occurs when a two-state electrical signal transitions from either a zero state to a one state or vice versa. Event-logging and time-stamping devices - such as PowerLogic s Circuit Monitor 4250 s - automatically time-stamp and log the transitions with GPS time values. 2. Mount and setup GPS antenna, GPS receiver, and GPS signal distribution & conversion equipment and wire to appropriate event logging and timestamping devices. GPS antenna, receiver, and signal distributor (GPS Signal Equipment) provide the millisecond time-stamp to the two-state discrete events logged in the event-logging and time-stamping devices. 3. Setup and establish data network communications between event-logging and time-stamping devices and the SER event logging software on a PC Server, using Modbus / TCP. 4. Install and setup SER event logging software onto PC Server Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 66

69 03/2014 Appendix H Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Devices APPENDIX H SCHWEITZER ENGINEERING LABORATORIES (SEL) DEVICES Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) device support has been added to SER 8.0 in order to accommodate support for SEL Sequence of Events (SER) onboard records. Since these are third party devices, they function differently than standard Schneider-Electric devices and these differences are denoted below: Table 7, SEL Device Differences from Schneider-Electric Devices SEL Device Caveat After creating an SEL device, the device event configuration must be synched. GPS and Event Synch error messages. Description Similar to the way alarms work in a CM4, an SEL device must be synched before events will show up in the Events Setup Page. (See Chapter 8 Setup Pages Device Setup Controls for more information) If an SEL device does not respond there will be two possible error messages: Comms Loss indicates that the device cannot connect due to an incorrect IP address or broken serial connection. Error indicates there is an issue other than IP address or serial communication error, such as device malfunction or incorrect password. Attempting to access the device multiple times in short succession with an incorrect password will cause the device to temporarily block all connections and return a Comms Loss error. SEL events may have aliases in the device. Every event in an SEL device may have an associated alias. Aliases may only be configured on the device. However, it is possible to see an event alias through the User Interface in the Events Setup page. (See Chapter 8 Setup Page Events Setup Controls for more information) Note: When synching the device event configuration, aliases will be pulled from the device. SEL event statuses may have custom names in the device. Typically, digital events contain two statuses, an ON and OFF state. By default, all statuses in SEL devices are given Asserted and Deasserted statuses corresponding to ON and OFF respectively. However, through 2014 Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 69

70 03/2014 Appendix H Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Devices device configuration, an SEL device may assign custom names to these statuses to be more descriptive. Therefore when trying to view these statuses they may be named something different than their defaults after initially setting up the device. Note: When synching the device event configuration, event statuses will be pulled from the device. If a Custom Status Name is changed through the SER interface, it will have no effect on the custom names in the device. Nor will re-synching the device overwrite Custom Status Names edited in SER. SEL devices may require (if enabled on device) a Level 1 Access Password. Whenever a command is issued on the SEL device, a level 1 password may be required. By default, no configuration should be required in order to communicate. If, however, default passwords have been changed in the device, the password must be entered in the Device Setup page. In order to enter a new password, Edit the SEL Device IP Address Field and enter a connection in the following format: IP:PORT:PASSWORD (EXAMPLE: :4200:OTTER) SEL devices may take up to 60 seconds on a timeout if improperly configured. There is no time synch quality per Event. If an IP Address is incorrectly entered, or an invalid password is given for a level 1 Access command, then the device may take up to 60 seconds until a timeout occurs. SEL devices do not keep a record of time quality per event. When the device has a valid IRIG-B connection, it assumes that the time quality per event is correct. Therefore, when looking at the time quality for a historical event, N/A is given as the response. When performing a Device Status Synch through the SER interface, it is possible to get the current time quality of the device as accurate as +/- 5ms Schneider Electric. All Rights Reserved. 70
