4 PBS Analytics Companies and institutions of all sizes use high performance computing to develop innovative new products and create entirely new markets. As a result, application workloads have become much larger and more complex than ever before. Comprehensive and robust analysis and visualization features are needed to help ensure limited computing resources are being used effectively and efficiently. As a core part of a PBS Works Suite solution, PBS Analytics turns oceans of data into insight, knowledge and intelligence. Altair s PBS Analytics (PBSA) is an easy to use data analysis and visualization solution that provides PBS Works administrators with advanced job analyses to support data-driven planning and decision making. Easily extensible to meet your unique requirements, data from multiple PBS Professional servers can be aggregated into a common database. With PBS Analytics, you can: create clean, concise charts, including additional chart options (such as XYZ plots), to furnish a deeper understanding of organization s HPC infrastructure and better root-cause analysis visualize charts arranged on a single screen with dashboards display statistics within an operations room or headquarters reception with PBS Analytics slideshow capability track hardware utilization, including accounting for configuration changes over time (i.e. adding/deleting nodes; downtime) analyze large quantities of utilization data quickly and easily with a new, high-performance database analyze job and workload historical usage data aggregate data from multiple PBS Professional servers drill-down to underlying data and export this data to a Comma Separated (CSV) file PBS Analytics 12.2 Release Notes 1

5 1.1 About PBS Analytics 12.2 PBSA 12.2 is a minor release designed specifically to improve the following areas: performance and scalability transparency of licensing record count It requires a complete uninstallation of PBSA 12.x. Please refer to section Uninstalling PBSA as documented in the PBS Analytics 12.x Administrator s Guide. Once PBSA 12.x is uninstalled, you may install PBSA Please refer to the section Installing PBSA GUI mode or Installing PBSA console mode in the PBS Analytics 12.2 Administrator s Guide for more information. After installing PBSA 12.2, you must configure PBSA and reparse all PBS Professional accounting logs. Please refer to the Post-installation chapter of the PBS Analytics 12.2 Administrator s Guide for more information. 2 PBS Analytics 12.2 Release Notes

6 1.2 Improvements and new features Spectrum Summary Description Performance and scalability An upgrade to the MonetDB (database) has improved chart rendering performance, which in turn has reduced the optimal hardware requirements necessary for PBSA. The updated hardware requirements are documented in section Optimal hardware requirements for PBSA engine of the PBS Analytics 12.2 Administrator s Guide Transparency of licensing record count The number of licensing records that are currently being used by PBSA is now available in the parser log file (parser.log). 7 1.3 Resolved issues Spectrum Summary Newly parsed accounting log data was not available in the PBSA charts, and the following messages were being seen frequently in the PBSA log file: :25:53,274 INFO [com.altair.pbsworks.parser. common.config.populator.eventrecordpopulator] Waiting for 100 seconds before retrying creation of rc_event_resource_occupancy_temp :27:33,276 WARN [com.altair.pbsworks.parser. common.config.populator.eventrecordpopulator] Unable to create rc_event_resource_occupancy_temp table. Description A database conflict occurred when parsing (writing to the database) overlapped with cache population (reading from the database) resulting in a failure to load new data into the database The daily parsing cycle was not importing accounting log data. Initial parsing of the PBS Professional accounting logs completed successfully. Accounting log data from subsequent parsing cycles was not imported into PBSA. The issue was related to a problem with the node details being configured with an end date of now. 4 PBS Analytics 12.2 Release Notes

8 Spectrum Summary Description The daily parsing cycle was not importing accounting log data when there was more than one year of accounting log data Report creation failed when the user applied a filter to a Dimension that contained a large number of values The PBSA web application displayed zero values for some Measures. Initial parsing of the PBS Professional accounting logs completed successfully. Accounting log data from subsequent parsing cycles was not imported into PBSA. The issue occurred when there was more than one year of accounting log data. While creating a chart, a chart filter was applied to a Dimension that contained a large amount of values. An error message was displayed and the chart creation failed. The Mondrian OLAP (online analytical processing) engine returned zero values for some Measures, for example Total CPU Walltime. 9 1.4 Known issues Spectrum Summary Description Workaround Installer will not allow the data collector to be installed when the PBSA web application and parser have already been installed on the machine Data collector time zone limitation Charts displaying total node walltime by day may show some spikes in resource utilization due to PBS jobs being suspended, resumed, and checkpointed. If the PBSA web application and parser have been installed on a machine, the data collector cannot be installed on that same machine in a separate installation process. PBSA currently does not support data collectors deployed across multiple time zones. PBS Professional does not provide activity logging for job suspension and resumption. This may affect the calculation of job run time, i.e., the job appears to run longer than it actually did. Install the PBSA web application, parser, and data collector as part of a single installation process. See sections Deployment Option One and Installing on a single server in the PBS Analytics Administrator s Guide. An instance of the PBSA web application and parser must be installed for each time zone. There is no workaround at the present time. 6 PBS Analytics 12.2 Release Notes

10 Spectrum Summary Description Workaround The Values chart filter attribute Hide Empty Values is only applied for charts that are two dimensional Print preview is not working for a chart type of Table when too many data points are displayed in the chart It is difficult to view charts when there are many chart legends attached to the chart. When a chart filter is applied to a Values, the ability to hide empty values (equal to 0) is disabled for charts that are three dimensional. An empty page is displayed in Print Preview when there are too many data points in a chart for a chart type of Table. Charts are being squeezed into a relatively small viewing area when there are too many chart legends. There is no workaround at the present time. Export the data to a Comma Separated Values (CSV) file and open it using your favorite spreadsheet tool. Enable the Hide Legends chart property to eliminate chart legends. Once this chart property is applied to the chart, the chart will be rendered in a larger viewing area. PBS Analytics 12.2 Release Notes 7

11 Spectrum Summary Description Workaround Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) should be disabled as it is not supported by PBSA PBSA 12.1 does not support SELinux. You may experience some unpredictable behavior when SELinux is enabled. SELinux can be disabled by changing parameters in the file: /etc/selinux/config. This file controls the state of SELinux. To disable SELinux: Edit /etc/selinux/config. Change the following parameters: SELINUX=disabled SELINUXTYPE=targeted Restart PBSA. 12 Spectrum Summary Description Workaround For site s with multiple PBS complexes, previous year s accounting log data is missing (not parsed) when accounting log data from different PBS complexes is parsed in separate parsing cycles. PBSA expects that all accounting log data from previous years will be parsed during the initial parsing cycle. Therefore the following is not supported: 1. Configure node details for PBS complex #1. 2. Parse PBS complex #1 accounting log records. 3. Configure node details for PBS complex #2. 4. Parse PBS complex #2 accounting log records. When PBSA parses the accounting log records for PBS complex #2, only the current year s accounting log records are parsed. Configure node details for all PBS complexes BEFORE parsing is initiated.
