Click OK and exit the registry editor. D
2 Install SafeCom Save-O-Meter Set up tracking in SafeCom Administrator In order for SafeCom to be able to supply the necessary information to SafeCom Save-O-Meter, tracking of deleted print jobs must be set up in SafeCom Administrator. 1. Open and login to SafeCom Administrator. 2. Right-click a server and select Server properties. 3. On the Tracking tab, select the Track deleted print jobs check box. 4. Click Apply and OK. Caution! In a multi-server installation this must be set up on all master and slave servers. D
3 Save-O-Meter Widget 3 Save-O-Meter Widget The Save-O-Meter widget is Flash-based and intended to be embedded on an HTML web page on the organization s intranet in order to show the savings resulting from the use of SafeCom Smart Printing. Note: For the SafeCom Save-O-Meter Widget to work make sure that TCP port 7707 is open on the SafeCom server. Every time the Widget makes a TCP connection to the SafeCom application on the specified port the savings data is forwarded to the Widget in XML format (3.3). 3.1 Test the Save-O-Meter Widget Open a browser and enter the IP address of the SafeCom server for which you would like to see the Save-O-Meter. The Save-O-Meter Widget opens and the savings data for the specific SafeCom server shows as specified in section Savings Savings are aggregated for these periods: Total Yearly Monthly Weekly The Total is never reset, whereas the others are reset according to their period. Savings are calculated in number of black and white pages saved (due to user deletion, autodeletion, or duplex) and color pages saved (due to user deletion, auto-deletion, duplex, or b/w print), as well as in trees, CO2, and H2O. Refer to chapter 4 for additional information concerning the calculations used in the Save-O-Meter. D
3 Save-O-Meter Widget 3.3 XML format for data The Save-O-Meter statistics data from the SafeCom Server is available in the following XML format. <saveometer> <lastupdate> :00:00</lastUpdate> <statistics> <week> <percent>14</percent> <sheets>170</sheets> <bw>170</bw> <color>170</color> <trees>4</trees> <CO2>2.5</CO2> <water>4.23</water> </week> <month> <percent>14</percent> <sheets>170</sheets> <bw>170</bw> <color>170</color> <trees>4</trees> <CO2>2.5</CO2> <water>4.23</water> </month> <year> <percent>14</percent> <sheets>170</sheets> <bw>170</bw> <color>170</color> <trees>4</trees> <CO2>2.5</CO2> <water>4.23</water> </year> <total> <percent>14</percent> <sheets>170</sheets> <bw>170</bw> <color>170</color> <trees>4</trees> <CO2>2.5</CO2> <water>4.23</water> </total> </statistics> </saveometer> D
4 Save-O-Meter calculations 4 Save-O-Meter calculations The tracking server updates savings statistics upon each tracking event which is triggered when: A job is deleted or modified due to Rule Based Printing, such as forced duplex and forced mono. A user actively deletes a job at the device. The system deletes a job as the time-out expires. A print job is decomposed into three printing resources Paper sheets (RS), Monochrome toner ink (RM), and Color toner ink set (RC) that it consumes (or saves) as it is printed, deleted, or modified by RBP. Paper sheets (RS) Unit is mm 2, square millimeters. For each paper sheet identified by the driver and/or the parser as having size w*h is printed, the area a=w*h of that sheet is added to RS. Sizes are derived from [1]. For example if three A4 sheet are used, then the RS used for this job is 3 * 210 * 297. All of the jobs below uses the same amount of paper resource and thus evaluates the same RS: o o o 4 duplex pages on 2 A3 sheets 2 simplex pages on 2 A3 sheets 8 duplex pages on 4 A4 sheets Monochrome toner ink (RM) Unit is also mm 2. For each impression on a page of a paper size X, the RM resource used is defined to be the area of X in unit mm 2. For example, if a job consists of 2 monochromes A3 impressions (regardless of how many sheets of paper it prints on), then the job s usage of resource RM is 2 * 297 * 420. This variable RM is a function of color and impressions only, as its value is indifferent to how much of the paper is actually covered by black ink. 5 impressions of a black dot on A3 paper is defined to use the same amount of RM resources as 10 impressions of 100% black on A4 paper. Color toner ink set (RC) Apart from the fact that this resource is triggered for color impressions only, its mechanism is identical to that of the RM resource. This is a distinct resource having a distinct market value. D
4 Save-O-Meter calculations The SafeCom system can reduce the consumption of resources RS, RM and RC by the following saving events: E1: A job is forced to use toner save due to RBP rules (saves RM, RC). If applied, then RM, RC is multiplied by 0.75 as derived from [2]. E2: A job is forced to use duplex due to RBP rules (saves RS) E3: A job is forced to print in monochrome due to RBP rules (saves RC) E4: A job is deleted due to RBP rules (saves RS,RM,RC) E5: A job is deleted due to users intervention at the printer (saves RS,RM,RC) E6: A job is deleted due to system time out expire after a warning was sent to the user that didn t collect the job at the printer (saves RS,RM,RC) Upon a tracking event, the following information: SAV(j) = [ Out(j), Off(j), Sys(j), User(j), RBP(j) ] is calculated from job j Out(j): The amount of RS, RM and RC actually consumed at the printer. Sys(j): The amount of RS, RM and RC that was saved due to event E6. User(j) : The amount of RS, RM and RC that was saved due to event E5. RBP(j): The amount of RS, RM and RC that was saved due to events E1,, E4. Off(j): The amount of RS, RM and RC that would have been consumed had none of the saving events E1,, E6 taken place. This calculation is done by reversing the transformations E1,, E6 applied to the print job. Upon each tracking event, the tracking server then aggregates SAV(j) in the statistics for all jobs J* printing under 7 time periods: SavTotal(J*): Total to date. Never resets. SavYear(J): Yearly SavHYear(J): Half-yearly SavQu(J): Quarterly SavMo(J): Monthly SavWeek(J): Weekly SavDay(J): Daily D
4 Save-O-Meter calculations The information shown in SafeCom Administrator s Save-O-Meter is derived from the current SavTotal(J*) retrieved from the Tracking server at the time of displaying. The resources RS, RM and RC are converted into Credits by applying the default primary charging scheme to SavTotal(J*). The paper area for these resources are first normalized to A4, A3, default or some other paper sizes that might be filled out in the charging scheme. SafeCom Administrator then converts (only) resource RS (paper sheets, area) into grams of paper (5 grams for an A4 ~ grams/m 2 ) and from this into environmental resources: Water By [5], recycling 1 short ton (0,91 t) of paper saves 26 m 3 of water. Trees By [5], recycling 1 short ton (0,91 t) of paper saves 17 mature trees. CO 2 By now defunct [3], Production of 1 ton of copy paper produces 5,690 lb. of greenhouse gases. Some information now available at [4]. References [1] [2] LaserJet.pdf 77% = "Toner life extended by 30%": 1 / % = "Reduction in cost": 0.55 / Mean 75%, or factor [3] [4] [5] D
