What is Renesas integrated development environment Renesas integrated development environment (High-performance Embedded Workshop) is the software which Renesas Electronics sells as a developer tool of the microcontrollers. There is the version called the free evaluation version that we can download from Internet other than the selling version. We use the free evaluation version of the Renesas integrated development environment this time (omit the free evaluation version afterward). Download the Renesas integrated development environment and install 2.1 Preliminary to download from our home page(user registration of MY Renesas) If you download it from Renesas site, it needs user registration of My Renesas. Register here if you are not registrated yet. It is free, and it needs your address. Advance to "2.2 Download of Renesas Integrated Development Environment (M16C series and R8C Family)" if you are already registered. Note: Advance to "2.3 Install of Renesas Integrated Development Environment(M16C Series and R8C Family)" if you have the CD-R for the seminar. Click "My Renesas" 1 Renesas Electronics om/ Click My Rnenesas. Click Register now!, and proceed with registration of it. 2 Note: down your address and password because need them when download the files. 2

7 2.2 Download of Renesas Integrated Development Environment(M16C series and R8C Family) 1 Get the IDE (Integrated Development Environment) from the Renesas site. Renesas Electronics 2 Click Coding Tools. 3 Click C/C++ Compiler Package for M16C Series R8C Families. 4 Click Downloads. 3

8 5 Click [Evaluation Software] C/C++ Compiler Package for M16C Series and R8C Family M3T-NC30WA V.6.00 Release Click Agree after reading the AGREEMENT. 7 Click Download. If you do not have a My Renesas account, please register for a new account first. A My Renesas account is required in order to download this software. 8 If you have a My Renesas account, login by entering your address and password, and clicking Login. 4

9 9 Check your purpose, and click Submit. Save the file to your PC. Downloaing of Renesas integrated development environment has completed. 10 The installed file is "nc30v600r00_ev.exe". (The "v600r00" part differs according to the version.) 5

10 2.3 Install of Renesas Integrated Development Environment(M16C Series and R8C Family) Run the installed file nc30v600r00_ev.exe of the 'Renesas integrated development environment' or CD for the seminar. (The v600r00 part differs according to a version.) 1 The nc30v600r00_ev.exe file is found in the below directory if you have the CD for the seminar. CD drive: 01-Softwares Note: Install the Renesas integrated development environment of this version without uninstalling even if Renesas integrated development environment has already entered. 2 Click Next >. 3 Click Standard Install (Recommended). 6

11 4 Click Next. Uncheck the "AutoUpdate" 5 Click Install. 6 Click Next >. 7

12 7 Click Yes. 8 After select the region, Click Next >. 9 Click Install >. 8

13 10 Click Finish. 11 Click Exit, and installation has completed. Note: Regarding the Limitation of free evaluation version of Renesas Integrated Deveropment Environment The free evaluation version of Renesas Integrated Deveropment Environment has a limit as below compared with the product version. Link size is confined to less than 64KB when it passes after installation more than 60 days. Because we have no support for free evaluation version at all, please use it with your understanding. 14 2.4 Create the shortcut icon For running the "High-performance Embedded Workshop" easily, create a shortcut icon on your desktop. 1 Click Start. 2 Click All Programs. 3 Open Renesas folder. 10

15 4 Open High-perfomance Embedded Workshop folder. 5 [1]Right-click the mouse button on High-performance Embedded Workshop. [2]Click Send to. [3]Click Desktop (create shortcut). 6 Shortcut was prepared on the desktop. 11

16 2.5 Display of the extensions There are many files with difference in only extension such as "kit12_38a.c", "kit12_38a.obj" and "kit12_38a.mot", in the files to treat in Renesas. Therefore, we would confuse about kinds of the file while we set to "Hide file extensions for known file types" of the Windows standard setting. Make setting to display extension here. 1 [1]Click Start. [2]Click Computer. 2 [1]Click Organize. [2]Click Folder and search options. 12

17 [1] Open the View tab. 3 [2] Move scroll bar below of Advanced settings. [3]Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types. [4]Click OK. 13

18 3. Preparation for Writing Program to MCU 3.1 Download of programming software Advance to "3.2 Install of R8C Writer" if you have the CD-R for the seminar. Get the R8C Writer from the Renesas site. 1 Renesas Electronics ally/ Click Download 2 Click Manual of the Micon Car Kit, Ver Click mcr100_eng.exe 4 Click Agree. Seve the file to your PC. 14

19 Downloading of R8C Writer has completed. 5 The installed file is mcr100_eng.exe. (The "100" part differs according to the version.) 15

20 3.2 Install of programming software Run the mcr100_eng.exe file of the "R8C Writer" or CD for the seminar. (The "100" part differs according to the version.) 1 The mcr100_eng.exe file is found in the below directory if you have the CD for the seminar. CD drive: 01-Softwares The installed file is in "C: mcr". 2 Click OK. Note: Do not change folders. Changing folders here will change the folder where the R8C Writer software is installed in the next step. 3 Installation has been completed. Click This program installed correctly. 4 Open the "C: mcr" folder. The "r8c_writer.exe" is programming software for R8C/3X series. 16

21 3.3 Registering the R8C Writer in the Renesas Integrated Development Environment Register the r8c_writer.exe program, which is the RY_R8C38 board flash programming software, in the Renesas integrated development environment 1 Open the "C: mcr" folder with Windows Explorer. Open the file "the_parameter_of_r8c_writer.txt". 2 Copy the first line This information will be used later, select all of the first line and copy it to the clipboard. After copying the line, the "the_parameter _of_r8c_writer.txt", file may be closed. 3 Run the Renesas integrated development environment. 4 Click Cancel. 5 Open the "Setup" menu and click Customize. 17

22 Click Menu and then click Add. 6 Note: If R8C Writer is already shown as valid from within the application, that means that it is already registered and this operation is not required. 7 Enter the following text in the Name field. "R8C Writer". 8 Enter a command in the Command field. This "command" specifies the place where the flash programming software resides. Click Browse. 9 A file selection dialog will be displayed. Select the file C: mcr r8c_writer.exe and click Select. 18

23 10 Here, the command has been entered. 11 Paste the copied line into the Argument field. 12 Click OK. This completes the tool addition. Verify that "R8C Writer" is valid in the application and click OK. 13 If it is not present, that means that it was not registered correctly. If that is the case, perform the registration procedure again. Other information in addition to the validity within the application information may be displayed. This is not a problem. 19

24 3.4 Install of USB Drivers To download (write) programs to the RY_R8C38 board (that is, to program the flash memory) using the RY_WRITER board, install the USB to serial IC driver as described in this section. If a different flash programmer board is used, follow the instructions provided with that product. 1 Open the "C: mcr driver" folder with Windows Explorer. 2 Open the "PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_ v1417" folder. Note: Here, "1417" is the version number. This may differ depending on when this software was downloaded. Run the "PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_ v1417.exe". 3 Note: Here, 1417 is the version number. This may differ depending on when this software was downloaded. Click Next. 4 Note: If the message "Delete the selected program and all its functions completely?" is displayed, it means that the driver has already been installed. In this case, click No to terminate the installation. However, if you are not sure whether or not the latest version of the driver is installed, click Yes. This will uninstall the existing driver and newly install the latest version (the current file being installed). 20

25 5 Click Finish. This completes the installation process. 21

26 3.5 Confirmation of COM Port RY_WRITER board 1 Connect by USB cable. Connect the PC and "RY_WRITER" board with using a USB cable. 2 1 To confirm the COM port number for the USB serial port, open Properties in My Computer. 2 3 Click Device Manager. 4 Confirm the number of the USB Serial Port (COMxx) under Ports (COM and LPT). In this example, the port number is COM8. 22

27 4. Programming Procedure [1] Turn off the power [3] FWE position (outside position) [2] Connected [1] Power is turned off [4] Power is turned on 5 V [2] Connect the RY-WRITER board to the RY_R8C38 board with a USB cable. (If already connected, simply leave them connected.) 1 4P cable LED lights [3] Set switch SW2 to the FWE position (outside position). Switch SW2 must only be changed when the power is turned off. USB cable RY_WRITER board [4] Turn on the power. The LED on the RY_R8C38 board should light at this time. Start up HEW (High-performance Embedded Workshop). Follow the instructions in section 4, Sample Programs, in Micon Car Kit, Ver.5.1, Program Explanation Manual - kit12_38a Version (Version for R8C/38A). Execute a BUILD. 2 Choose kit12_38a.c of C source file and click BUILD. 23

28 3 Click "R8C Writer" in the Tools menu in the Renesas integrated development environment. [1] The flash programmer software (R8C Writer) will start. [1] Set the communication port number to the port number on the RY_WRITER board. [2] Click Start write. The flash programming operation will start. 4 This indicates the status of the interactions with the microcontroller. [2] Note: Verifying the data after programming.if the Verify after Programming check box is checked, the flash programmer will verify the data after programming. We recommend leaving this box checked. Note: Terminating automatically after programming completes. If the Terminate Automatically after Programming check box is checked, the R8C Writer program will exit automatically. When the programming operation has completed click Finish to exit from the R8C Writer program. If Terminate Automatically after Programming check box is checked, the R8C Writer program will exit automatically. 24

29 5 An error message such as the one shown at the left will be displayed if it was not possible to program the flash memory. Check the states of the USB cable and the microcontroller, click OK, and perform the programming operation again. When the programming operation has completed, run the program using the following procedure. [2] Remove the cable [1] Power is turned off [4] Power is turned on [1] Turn off the power. 6 [3] Set to the inside position 5 V [2] The USB cable may be left connected or may be disconnected. (However, it should be disconnected if the micon car will be operated.) USB cable 4P cable RY_WRITER board [3] Set switch SW2 to the inside position. Switch SW2 must only be changed when the power is turned off. [4] The downloaded program will be run when the power is turned on. 25
