1 Recycle Bin Holds onto deleted files until you empty the bin. Windows Desktop The screen below should be similar to what you may have seen on your computer at work or at home. Icons For: Programs Files Devices Task Bar Start Menu Button Everything starts here! You can launch any program from this menu. Current Programs Software that has been loaded and is available at YOUR command by clicking on its button. System Tray Shows watchdog programs those that run always (in the background). These constantly check your system or wait to be opened by some automatic means (ie: virus protection software). The screen on the right shows two program windows opened in the desktop area. Just like looking at your own physical desktop (in your office), there may be times when you pile one piece of paper on top of another. In this computerized version, the Microsoft Word program sits on top of another, Internet Explorer. To bring the Internet Explorer program to the top, you simply need to click on any part of it s exposed window. Alternatively, you could click on the Internet Explorer button in the Task bar, and even choose which of it s child windows you want to bring to the top of the pile. To Re-Size a window, move the mouse over the window s border until a twoheaded arrow appears (as shown in the upper right corner in the screen at the right). 3 Copying Files & Folders Copying or moving files and folders is as easy as playing solitaire you pick up an item (or items) and move the mouse to the new location and let go.. Click Button Tap once & let go (click) to: Select an object Position a cursor Press & hold to: Pick up an object Tap twice & let go (double -click) to: Launch a program Open a menu or dialog window Large Icons view Selecting Multiple Items Contiguous Range: Click on the file item. Then hold the SHIFT key. Click on the last item. Staggered Range: Click on the file item. Then hold the CTRL key. Click on each additional item, one-byone, while holding the CTRL key. 4 Start Menu Microsoft changed the way the Start menu functions when the moved from Windows 7 to Windows 8 & 10. The Start menu gives you access to every program installed on your computer. The Start button, located on the Task bar, and the Start Menu will appear. Let s look at each Windows 7 (we will launch Solitaire) 1. Position the mouse pointer over the Start button and click (tap the left mouse button) 2. Move your mouse upward so it points to the All Programs choice. The All Programs choice is known as the Programs group, because it reveals another menu of additional choices. You can identify the groups from the regular commands by the Folder icon to its left. 3. Point to the All Programs group, and click on it with the left mouse button. The list changes. Slide you mouse up and then click on the Games group. The group will expand to reveal its contents. 4. Now slide over to the Solitaire choice and click. The Solitaire program should load. Notice that the Solitaire choice different icon to its left; that s because it s a program shortcut. Commonly, you will find the instructions above written in books as: Start All Programs Games Solitaire. Windows 10 (we will launch Solitaire) 1. Position the mouse pointer over the Start button and click (tap the left mouse button) 2. On the left, you have what looks like the Programs list from all previous versions of Windows. Both individual major programs are shown as well as Program Groups. You can identify the Program Groups from the regular programs by the small triangle to its right. The triangle pointing downward signifies that another menu of choices will appear. 3. While your pointer is on a Programs Group, click the arrow to reveal the list of Programs within it (OpenOffice is shown below). 4. Now slide over to the Program choice and click once. The program should launch. On the right, are tiles, which were introduced in Windows 8. These are quick one-click-to-launch icons. To place a program s icon in this area, find it in the list and Right-Click on it. In the menu that appears, you can choose : Pin to Start =to add it to the tiles on the right More Pin to Taskbar =to add it to the bottom of the screen. Paul J. 5 Adjusting Your Mouse Settings So with all this mousing around, you may still feel uncomfortable with the way the mouse works. We can adjust a few settings on the mouse to compensate for your own personal touch. Launch the Windows Control Panel through the Start Menu by using your mouse to click on: (Win 7) Start Control Panel -or- (Win 10) Start Type the words Control Panel while the Start Menu is visible IMPORTANT: There are many programs in the Windows Control Panel. Be careful not to play with to many of these programs unless you know what you are doing as they can cause an unknowledgeable user to damage their system s configuration. LAUNCH ONLY THE PROGRAMS MENTIONED HERE. Find the Mouse icon and double-click on it. It would be foolish for me to show many of the screens here as each system can have a different manufacturer s mouse and a different screen arrangement of the setting controls. What you should look for are: Double-Click Speed to adjust how rapidly you must tap the click button to launch a program. Pointer Speed to adjust the speed at which the mouse pointer (arrow) responds to your hand movement. There are other customization settings that you might want to play with for cosmetic customization of your mouse properties. These include: Left-handed configuration Pointer images Pointer trails Step savers Open Windows Explorer Remember: not all computers will offer all of these settings.
