4 Hand Over The hand over process occurs when the fully functioning computer system is returned to the customer. If the client does not accept that the work which has been completed meets the requirements for the installation satisfactorily then they will not accept the hand over until any outstanding issues have been resolved. It is therefore important that the installation is fully completed to the agreed requirements before attempting the hand over process.

5 Configuration to meet customer/user needs As the customer has the right to refuse to pay you if the installation does not meet the agreed requirements it is important that you have configured the software to meet the needs completely. This task should not be complicated however it must be completed and the software tested to ensure any issues are highlight and resolved.

6 Hand over to the Customer Formal hand over to the customer involves not only handing over control of the computer system with new software installed. It also requires handing over installation details, technical manuals, user guidance documentation, contact details for technical and user support as well as any other materials that were used in the installation that belong to the customer. All of this information is extremely important to the customer so that they can make effective use of the software installation.

7 Customer/User acceptance Once you have completed the formal handover the customer will need to formally accept the installation or upgrade as been completed satisfactorily. Before they do this they be subject to user acceptance testing. At this point the customer will normally sign a release form that confirms the installation has been accepted and completed. If the customer does not accept the installation has been completed satisfactorily you may need to spend more time working on it. This is why clearly defined requirements with the customer are so important. A dispute over a completed job may cost money and damage your reputation.

9 Backing Out If the installation has not been successful then it is likely that you will be expected to back out of the installation. This will involve Uninstalling the new software, Reinstalling the previous software Recovering any lost files Reconfiguring the your system settings This process will be easier if you have backed up the original system.

10 Data Integrity Data integrity is the opposite of data corruption, which is a form of data loss. The overall intent of any data integrity technique is the same: ensure data is recorded exactly as intended and upon later retrieval, ensure the data is the same as it was when it was originally recorded. In short, data integrity aims to prevent unintentional changes to information. It is critical that you do not corrupt or loose any clients data during an upgrade or installation. It's a good idea to create a restore point before you make any changes to your computer that could potentially cause problems or make the system unstable.

11 System recovery point A restore point is a saved "snapshot" of a computer's data at a specific time. Restore points are a component of the Windows System Restore utility. By creating a restore point, you can save the state of the operating system and your own data so that if future changes cause a problem, you can restore the system and your data to the way it was before the changes were made. When a restore point is established, your computer creates a backup copy of all data at that particular time. The possible types of restore points are: system checkpoints, which are scheduled restore points that your computer creates; manual restore points, which the user creates; and installation restore points, which are automatically created when you install certain programs.

12 Copying data (registry) Microsoft Windows stores its configuration information in a database called the registry. The registry is the central storage for all computer configuration data. The Windows system configuration, the computer hardware configuration, information about installed programs, the types of documents that each program can create, and user preferences are all stored in the registry. Windows continually references this information during its operation. The registry stores the data in a structured hierarchy of keys, sub-keys, and named values. Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Microsoft recommends that you backup the registry before you edit it.

13 Copying data (user) The simplest method is to manually back up your files and settings to removable media or a network location. You can specify the files and settings that you want to back up and how often you want to perform a backup. Example of files Contacts Desktop Downloads Favourites Links My Documents or Documents My Music or Music My Pictures or Pictures My Videos or Videos Saved Games Some user documents or folders will be on a different partition or disk, particularly if you have a high-end workstation.
