Welcome to PADS4 Welcome to PADS4, one of the most advanced and complete digital signage software packages that are available today. This PADS4 manual describes the installation of the PADS4 software. Page 2 of 142

What's Digital Signage? Information and communication have become an integral part of our modern society. From all sides a large amount of information reaches us through various media. Therefore it s important to provide people at the right moment with the right, targeted information. This is exactly what digital signage is about. Digital signage is the generic term for displaying information to a targeted audience, at a selected location and moment using digital screens. This information can be different per display and per moment. Some examples of digital signage are welcoming screens at reception areas, screens for dynamic guidance in buildings or advertising screens in shops. Also screens showing timetable information at airports are a form of digital signage. Instead of digital signage one sometimes speaks about narrowcasting or digital out-of-home media (DOOHM). Digital signage software To control and manage the digital screens digital signage software is used. The quality and features of the chosen software mainly determine the capabilities of your digital signage system. Net Display Systems is one of the world's leading providers of digital signage software. Page 3 of 142

Requirements There is a number of requirements that must be met before the PADS4 software can be installed. These requirements include hardware, network and software. In this section Hardware requirements Describes the recommended hardware for a typical PADS4 system. Network requirements Describes the requirements for the network connection between the PADS4 components. Software requirements Describes what software is required to use the PADS4 software. Page 4 of 142

Hardware Requirements The hardware requirements for PADS4 are mainly determined by the configuration you have selected. When you have a standalone installation with all PADS4components on one single PC there will be different requirements compared to a network installation where each PADS4 component is installed on a separate PC. Below the different configurations are listed, followed by a total view of the recommended requirements. Server PC The Server PC is the pivot of the system. On this PC the PADS4 Server software runs. Of course the requirements for this PC mainly depend on the size of the system and how intensively the system is used. In general every modern PC will be satisfying to act as a PADS4 Server PC. Scheduler/Designer PC The Scheduler/Designer PC is a desktop PC that is intended to run the PADS4 Scheduler, PADS4Designer PC and optionally the PADS4 Agent, PADS4 System Management and PADS4 Domain Management software. There can be one or more Scheduler/Designer PCs, depending on the number of people that want to use the PADS4 system. Viewer Windows PC The Viewer PC is mostly a small-sized PC that is attached to or built-in the public display device. Other names that are often used for this type of PC are 'display controller', 'graphical engine board (GEB)' or 'set top box'. Depending on the kind of content you want to run on the Viewer PC, we've divided the Viewer PCs in a number of categories, each with their own recommendations. Simple Viewer This type of Viewer needs to be able to play elementary content, like text and images. Multi-media Viewer This type of Viewer needs to be able to smoothly play content that puts a lot of strain on your system, like HD movies. Requirements The requirements for the different kinds of Windows PCs are listed below: Page 5 of 142

Network Requirements There must be a network connection (Internet, Intranet or (W)LAN) between the installed PADS4 components so that they can communicate with each other. Network infrastructure The PADS4 system requires some type of network connection between the PADS4 Manager/Designer PC and the PADS4 Server PC on one side and between the PADS4 Viewer PCs and the PADS4 Server PCs on the other side. The most commonly used network infrastructure is a LAN (Local Area Network) with UTP (at least CAT-5 quality) cabling. Other possibilities are a WAN (Wide Area Network), Intranet or Internet connection. Wireless connections are also supported. This includes GPRS as well UMTS. N O T E T he networ k c onnec tion mus t b e full d uplex. T his is nec es s ar y to s uppor t the two-way c ommunic ation of PADS4. Internet connection When an Internet connection is used as network infrastructure between the PADS4 Viewer PCs and the PADS4 Server PC (or between a replicated PADS4Server PC and a central PADS4 Server PC) then this requires some additional configuration settings, like port forwarding in routers etc. This will be described in more detailed further on in this help file. Port numbers The network communication between the components of the PADS4 system uses TCP/IP. PADS4 now uses one port number to communicate and by default it's If you are using a firewall on the PADS4 Server PC this means that one or more of the above port numbers will have to be opened in order for PADS4 to communicate. On the client side (for instance the PADS4 Viewer PC) it's not necessary to open any port numbers in the firewall. N O T E PADS4 has b uilt-in featur es to automatic ally d etec t a PADS4 Ser ver in your networ k. However a PADS4 Ser ver c an only b e automatic ally d etec ted when the UDP p or t numb er 3702 is not b loc ked b y a fir ewall on the s er ver PC or s omewher e els e in the networ k. 8 Software Requirements The PADS4 software requires certain software to be installed beforehand. Summary: Operating System Framework Microsoft Media Player* Microsoft Internet Explorer* Microsoft Powerpoint* Microsoft Office drivers Adobe Flash* Direct-X* Video codec drivers* TV-Card drivers* *Items marked with * are only related to PADS4 Viewer and PADS4 Designer software. Operating System PADS4 runs on the following operating systems: Viewer software: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or higher Windows 8/8.1 Windows 10 Other software: Windows 2008 Server Release 2 Service Pack 2 or higher Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or higher Windows 8/8.1 Windows 10 Operating System: Windows 32-bit Windows 64 bit PADS4 will automatically switch to 64-bit mode when the operating system is 64-bit for all applications. 64-bit has no limitation for memory usage and can deal with very large PADS4 Presentations. Page 8 of 142

Frameworks The PADS4 software requires some frameworks to run properly. Below these frameworks are listed, as well as what version (32- or 64-bit) of the framework is required for a particular operating system (32- or 64-bit). As you can see, some need both versions. N O T E Star ting fr om r eleas e 2, PADS4 r eq uir es the Mic r os oft.net Fr amewor k ver s ion 4.5. Ear lier r eleas e ver s ions of PADS4 r eq uir e the Mic r os oft.net Fr amewor k ver s ion 4.0. Framework 64-bit operating system 32-bit operating system Microsoft.NET Framework version 4.5 (Full version) Microsoft SQL Server Compact version 4.0 Microsoft Sync Framework 2.1 Core Components Microsoft Sync Framework 2.1 Provider Services If you use the USB stick version of the PADS4 setup then the English version of these items are part of the installation and will automatically be installed when necessary. With the download version of the PADS4 setup these items are NO part of the installation. This means that in this case you have to make sure that the frameworks have been installed before you start the PADS4 installation program. The frameworks and engine can be downloaded from microsoft.com/downloads. When you install the frameworks you must make sure that you install exactly the same version of the frameworks on all computers that will run one or more of the PADS4 components. If the versions are not exactly the same then this may cause errors in the PADS4 software. The USB stick version of the PADS4 setup will install the English version of the Microsoft.NET Framework. This means that any error message that is reported by the.net Framework will be in the English language. Optionally you can separately install one of the.net Framework language packs to have the Page 9 of 142

error messages in your native language. For the Dutch, German and French language you can find these language packs in the \Tools\DotNet Framework 4.5 Language Packs\ folder on the USB stick. For other languages you will have to download it from the Microsoft website Microsoft Windows Media Player For playing videos and sounds the PADS4 software uses Microsoft Windows Media Player technology. For this at least version 12 of the Windows Media Player is required. Without the Windows Media Player PADS4 is not able to play any video or sound. I M P O R T A N T T o s uppor t a c er tain vid eo file for mat you have to ins tall the c or r ec t c od ec d r iver for this file for mat on the PADS4 Des ig ner PC as well as eac h PADS4 Viewer PC. Microsoft Internet Explorer PADS4 uses Microsoft Internet Explorer technology for displaying web contents in its web page element. For this it's required that you have at least version 9.0 of the Microsoft Internet Explorer installed on both the PADS4 Designer PC as well as each PADS4 Viewer PC. Microsoft Powerpoint There are three page elements in PADS4 that can be used to run Microsoft Powerpoint presentations: The Powerpoint element Install Microsoft Powerpoint 2007 or higher on the Viewer & Designer PC. This element is capable of showing Powerpoint Presentations inside PADS4 presentations in a non full size frame. The web page element Install Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer 97 or the Microsoft Powerpoint application. Because of build-in limitations in the Powerpoint software it will not work in combination with Microsoft Powerpoint Viewer 2003 or higher. The external application element With the external application element you can start the Powerpoint Viewer executable with the Powerpoint presentation as a command line argument. This works with any version of the Powerpoint Viewer. The Powerpoint Viewer will always run full-screen. For more information about how to include Microsoft Powerpoint presentations in your PADS4 presentation, please see the PADS4 Designer help file. Page 10 of 142

Microsoft Office Drivers for PADS4 dataproviders When you want to use Microsoft Office dataproviders (Excel or Access), the office drivers need to be installed otherwise PADS4 is not able to create a connection with office products. These drivers are not available by default. The Microsoft Office drivers can be downloaded from Be aware that you must select the 32-bit version or 64-bit version based on your OS. Installing a 32-bit version office drivers onto a 64-bit OS will not work properly for PADS4. Adobe Flash or Shockwave The web page element of the special Flash add-on element of PADS4 can be used for displaying Adobe flash or shockwave files. For this it's required that you have installed the Adobe flash or shockwave plugin on the PADS4Designer PC as well as each PADS4Viewer PC. This plug-in can be downloaded from Direct-X Drivers The graphical engine PADS4 uses, relies on Microsoft's framework for handling tasks related to multimedia, which is called DirectX. It's required that you have at least version 9.0c. Video Codec drivers Please make sure that the driver for you graphical card is Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) compatible. This is as much required as it is for the video card itself. Please make sure that you use a correct codec driver. Practice has turned out that certain codec drivers have a memory leak. This can lead to PADS4Viewer PCs to hang. Correct codec drivers can be found at TV-Card Drivers If the PADS4 Viewer PCs and the PADS4 Designer PCs have been equipped with an TV card, analog or digital, then you must make sure that you install the latest driver software for this card. 12 Choosing your PADS4 configuration Before you can start installing PADS4 you first have to determine your configuration. In this section Standalone Explains a standalone configuration where all PADS4 applications will be installed on one single PC. Network Explains a network configuration where PADS4 applications will be installed on multiple PCs to form one installation. Global (large) Network Explains a worldwide network configuration which is global or has a large configuration (read has a lot of viewers connected) where the content library bandwidth is limited. Page 12 of 142

Standalone configuration With a standalone configuration all PADS4 components are installed on one single PC. The computer acts as a Scheduler/Designer PC, Server PC and Viewer PC. System Management and Domain Management are installed as well. The following components are installed: PADS4 Server PADS4 Designer PADS4 Scheduler PADS4 Viewer PADS4 Agent PADS4 System Management PADS4 Domain Management If these applications are only used by one single user it's recommended to install these components on the Server PC instead of a separate desktop PC if possible. This makes it easier to handle content files (pictures, videos etc.) and real-time data. Remarks An alternative set up would be a PC containing the PADS4 Server and Viewer and another PC the Scheduler/Designer PC. Page 13 of 142

Network configuration The most commonly used PADS4 configuration is a network configuration whereby a Server PC, one or more desktop PCs and a number of Viewer PCs is used. Server PC Usually the following components are installed on the Server PC of the PADS4 system: PADS4 Database PADS4 Server PADS4 Sub Server (optional server that is able to synchronize with the main server) Desktop PC Usually the following components are installed on a desktop PC: Page 14 of 142

PADS4 Designer PADS4 Scheduler PADS4 Agent PADS4 System Management PADS4 Domain Management If these applications are only used by one single user it's recommended to install these components on the Server PC instead of a separate desktop PC if possible. This makes it easier to handle content files (pictures, videos etc.) and real-time data. Viewer PC Usually the following component is installed on each Viewer PC: PADS4 Viewer Page 15 of 142

Global (large) Network configuration If there are situations where you want to limit the bandwidth, lower your PADS4 Server CPU usage or create local sub systems, this can be achieved by using the PADS4 Sub Server. The PADS4 Sub Server is a special Server which will be connected to a PADS4 Main Server. The Sub Server will synchronize the database and control library with the PADS4 Main Server. Global Usage of PADS4 For instance when you have a head office in Europe, but have a lot of Viewers elsewhere, it is possible to setup a PADS4 Sub Server that will synchronize with the Main Server in Europe. Each Viewer will synchronize with the (local) Sub Server instead of going directly to the Main Server. This will save a lot of traffic. Hardware limit A second reason of using a PADS4Sub Server is for situations where the PADS4 Server hardware reaches it's limit. Backup system A third reason can be to have a backup facility in case of system failure. Page 16 of 142

Server PC (headoffice) Usually the following components are installed on the Server PC of the PADS4 system: PADS4 Database PADS4 Server Desktop PC Usually the following components are installed on a desktop PC: PADS4Designer PADS4Scheduler PADS4Agent PADS4System Management PADS4Domain Management * Page 17 of 142

If these applications are only used by one single user it's recommended to install these components on the Server PC instead of a separate desktop PC if possible. This makes it easier to handle content files (pictures, videos etc.) and real-time data. *Domain Management is not available in the normal PADS4 setup. Please ask our sales department if you would like to use Domain Management. Sub Server PC Usually the following components are installed on a Sub Server PC: PADS4 Database PADS4 Server The Sub Server is connected to the Main Server (or another Sub Server) and will synchronize the database and content library. This way all the content will be transferred over the network from the headoffice to the sub location once. This will prevent the Viewers from synchronizing all the data directly over the network from the head office directly. There are options to synchronize only a subset of the content for each Sub Server. Viewer PC Usually the following component is installed on each Viewer PC: PADS4Viewer N O T E S As a us er you may c onnec t to the PADS4 s ys tem thr ough a Main Ser ver or a Sub Ser ver. Fr om that Ser ver you ar e ab le to watc h the whole s ys tem as wher e you c onnec ted to the loc al Ser ver. Page 18 of 142

Installation of PADS4 HTML5 Viewer PADS4 HTML5 Viewer is an application for playback of PADS4 presentations in a platform independent browser environment. This gives you a playback solution on devices that don't necessarily use a Microsoft Windows operating system, like Android and Linux devices. The PADS4 HTML5 Viewer has been fully integrated into PADS4. You can just connect your PADS4 HTML5 Viewers to the same PADS4 Server as your other PADS4 Viewers and PADS4 Desktop Viewers. To design and schedule your presentations for HTML5 Viewers you can just use the standard PADS4 Designer and PADS4 Scheduler application. In this section Requirements Explains the requirements that must be met in order to use PADS4 HTML5 Viewer. Setup & configuration Describes how to setup and configure a PADS4 HTML5 Viewer. Page 48 of 142

Requirements (HTML5 Viewer) Before you start using PADS4 HTML5 Viewer, please ensure that you meet the requirements described below. Operating system Since PADS4 HTML5 Viewer runs in an Internet browser, the application is platform independent and should work with any operating system. However, technology and hardware may prevent PADS4 HTML5 Viewer from working correctly on certain devices. have a look at the HTML5 Viewer Operating System page for more info. Internet browser PADS4 HTML5 Viewer has been designed to operate under Microsoft Internet Explorer or Google Chrome. It's strongly recommended to use one of the following browsers: Browser Recommended version Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 or higher Google Chrome 29.0 or higher HTML5 When you decide to choose another Internet Browser you have to make sure it supports HTML5. I M P O R T A N T W hen you us e another Inter net b r ower that s uppor ts HT ML5 a p r op er wor king of the HT ML5 Viewer c annot b e g uar anteed d ue to the fac t that the HT ML5 s tandar d is inter - p r eted d iffer ently p er b r ows er vendor. Caching and database Both Internet Explorer and Chrome support IndexedDB, a method for client-side data storage, which is used by PADS4 HTML5 Viewer to locally store downloaded content. When you choose your own Internet Browser, please verify if your Browser supports this technology (see for an overview). Page 49 of 142

If your Browser doesn't support IndexedDB, PADS4 HTML5 Viewer will use the standard features of your Browser for caching and reusing downloaded files. If there is no local cache, then PADS4 HTML5 Viewer will download its content each time it's required. This may use lead to significant bandwidth usage and a poor performance. Limitations When you choose to work with PADS4 HTML5 Viewers, you should be aware that the technology and hardware may cause the HTML5 Viewer to behave differently and with certain limitations, compared to standard Windows-based PADS4 Viewers. The current release of the PADS4 HTML5 Viewer only supports the page elements of the PADS4 BASIC Viewer: Text, Pictures, Lines, Shapes and Formatted Text. PADS4 HTML5 Viewers have full support of data providers to integrate real-time data in your PADS4 presentations. This includes the usage of rules and property bindings. However, requests for real-time data will always be forwarded to PADS4 Data Server. A PADS4 HTML5 Viewer cannot collect real-time data from a data source by itself. Page 50 of 142

Setup & configuration (HTML5 Viewer) Setup and configuration of the HTML5 Viewer is related to the device where the PADS4 HTML5 Viewer is installed. In this section HTML5 Viewer Operating System Describes the allowed Operating Systems to use PADS4 HTML5 Viewer. 55 Identification Viewer Name Specify the name of the Viewer. It will be visible in the Scheduler, Messenger and Agent under this name. This name is automatically created the first time you start a new HTML Viewer and can be edited through this Options window or by using the PADS4 Agent Application. The name is displayed at the left, bottom side of the background PADS4 product which is displayed when nothing is scheduled. This can be of use when you want to identify the Viewers in your environment after physical installation of the devices. Hide Logon status If there is no running presentation, the connection state of the Viewer is displayed in the left, bottom position. A green dot means the Viewer is connected to a server. A red dot means the Viewer does not (yet) have a valid connection. Optional Password Optionally specify a password if this is required by the PADS4 Server. The passwords for a Viewer can be set by the System Management Application. Server Connection Server Identifies the PADS4 server name and port currently used. The name is specified with the URL or by using the device dependent URL launcher. Have a look at the URL Server specification page for specifying settings through parameters. PADS4 Domain Optionally specify a PADS4 domain where this PADS4 HTML Viewer belongs to. If the Viewer is part of a domain which is not the default, it is a requirement and must be filled in. Backup Server Optionally specify a PADS4 backup server. In cases where the main PADS4 server cannot be reached, the HTML Viewer will connect to the specified PADS4 backup server. The PADS4 HTML Viewer will in case of connection failures try to reconnect to the PADS4 server at a certain interval. By default port 80 is used for communication between Viewer and server. Synchronization Content Library Synchronization Activation Automatic By default the synchronization is active during the whole day. This means that when a new file is detected at the server, the PADS4 HTML Viewer will download this file to the local storage and save it here. The Page 55 of 142

benefit is that when the network connection is lost, the PADS4 HTML Viewer is still able to show the content such as videos and images. Second this prevents the network from using a lot of bandwidth to send the content to the PADS4 HTML Viewer each time it is needed. In cases when the hardware where the PADS4 HTML Viewer is running does not have a local storage, it will retrieve the content from the server each time it is needed. Period using Period this will limit the time and day the synchronization may take place. For example when you only want to have a nightly synchronization. Never When Never is selected, nothing will be synchronized. When content is needed, the file will be downloaded and stored in the local cache until the device is restarted. Screen Settings Scaling By default the presentation is scaled to fit inside the window. Optionally the maintain aspect ratio may be turned on to keep the aspect ratio of the elements. If you do not want presentations to scale, select the do not scale option. There are device dependent limitations for scaling videos. Have a look at the specific page for this device. Rotation By default the presentation is shown in landscape format. Optionally the screen content can be rotated when the display is positioned in portrait mode. Follow the device guidelines if the device is at 90 or 270 degrees when in portrait mode. Background Image Specify a background image that will be displayed in case tjhere are no presentations scheduled. By default a PADS4 logo is displayed. Viewer Restart Specify at which time the Viewer must restart. This option will restart the display and will free up used resources which may be taken by the system. You are allowed to specify the time the reboot must take place and at which days of the week. Log Information Shows PADS4 HTML Viewer log information. The log can be of use when for instance the Viewer does not find a certain image that must be displayed. When PADS4 cannot find this image, it will create a log message indicating that a file is not found. Also network issues are stored in the log to inform that a network connection has failed. 58 URL Server specification To make a connection with the PADS4 Server the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) must be specified on the device. This means you do not have to install PADS4 software on the device. Each device has it's own way of entering this URL. Please have a look in the documentation from the device how this can be done. Basicly what happens is that the device will boot, and start the URL in a browser environment. The browser will try to open the URL and download the PADS4 Viewer application onto the device. After that the HTML Viewer is started and will setup a network connection with the PADS4 Server. Please enter the following URL link: example (use different port) example Where <Server> is the name/ip address of the server where the PADS4 Server is installed. By default port 80 is used for connection to the server. If needed specify a different port number separated with a colon (:) from the servername. Local Cache When there is no local cache available on the device the settings entered in the options screen could be disposed when the device is rebooted. To prevent the settings from being deleted, it is possible to specify the settings in the url as a parameter. Parameters It is possible to add parameters to the URL. In situations where the devices has no local storage facilities it is possible to specify the settings in the URL. 61 Local Storage facilities Depending on the device, operating system and browser type used, there are some limitations. Synchronization Just like the normal Viewer, The PADS4 HTML5 Viewer is able to synchronize the content from the Server. In situations where the network is down PADS4 is still able to run the presentation from the local content cache. But therefor the device must have a storage facility. Data Storage PADS4 HTML5 Viewer has a build in mechanism for storage of data on the local device. Both Internet Explorer and Chrome support IndexedDB, a method for client-side data storage, which is used by PADS4 HTML5 Viewer to locally store downloaded content. When you choose your own Internet Browser, please verify if your Browser supports this technology (see for an overview). For Internet Explorer the size of the temporarily internet files can be adjusted. Google Chrome automatically sizes the cache. No Browser IndexedDB support, Temporarily Internet Files Cache If your Browser doesn't support IndexedDB, PADS4 HTML5 Viewer will use the standard features of your Browser for caching and reusing downloaded files. You will have to set the Internet Explorer temporarily internet files cache size. No Local Cache If there is no local cache, then PADS4 HTML5 Viewer will download its content each time it's required. This may use lead to significant bandwidth usage and a poor performance. Page 61 of 142

First time start of the HTML5 Viewer If no settings are found, a PADS4 viewer name will automatically be generated. In the left bottom part of the display, the name and connectionstate will be displayed. Using a connected mouse to the display, the options menu of PADS4 can be opened. Samsung requires a left mousebutton press down and hold this until the menu appears (about 10 seconds) Other venders require a right mouse button click. Have a look at the URL Server specification page for specifying settings through parameters specified in the URL. It is also possible to use the PADS4 Agent application to remotely change Viewer settings. If you open the menu, the following will be shown: Identification Identification Specify the Viewer name by which this viewer will be identified. Server Connection The Server connection is already specified as URL that started this PADS4 Viewer including the portnumber. Synchronization By default the synchronization is active during the whole day. Optionally specify the period in which the synchronization of content may be running and on which days. This will allow the user to minimize the used bandwidth during periods at which it is not allowed or inconvenient. When Never is selected, nothing will be synchronized until the page requires a certain file. When that happens the file is downloaded and stored local for the next time. Page 63 of 142

Screen Settings Scaling By default the presentation is scaled to fit inside the window. Optionally the maintain Presentation Aspect Ratio may be turned on to keep the aspect ratio of the content. If you do not want presentations to scale, select the Do not scale presentations option. Orientation By default the presentation is shown in landscape format. Optionally the screen content can be rotated when the display is in portrait mode. Be aware that based on the way the screen is positioned, it could be 90 or 270 degrees angle. 80 Offline Activation For certain PADS4 installations it's not possible or desirable to have an Internet connection. Although reasons for this can be very valid, the PADS4 installation still needs to be activated. This can be done through an offline activation. To start the offline activation There are two things required to activate a PADS4 installation that doesn't have an Internet connection: The PADS4 installation that's without Internet connection A device that has access to the Internet and the ability to transfer files to a PC, directly or indirectly (by means of a data storage device or such). To get the offline activation file In order to activate offline, you will need to get the offline activation file. This file contains all necessary data from the PADS4 Server you want to activate. To get this file, you need to start the License Wizard on the PADS4 installation without Internet connection, most commonly the PADS4 Server PC: Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar. Select (All) Programs, PADS4 and then Configuration. Select License Wizard. After the program has started, select the PADS4 Server you want to activate. Page 80 of 142

Click Finish to complete the activation process and leave the PADS4 License Wizard. Your installation has now been activated. Page 93 of 142

Reactivate your PADS4 installation (hardware change) PADS4 licenses automatically expire and require a reactivation when PADS4 detects a significant hardware change on the server of your PADS4 installation after a grace period of 7 days. With the use of a virtual server this may lead to problems, because the virtual hardware characteristics of your server may automatically change after a reboot. In most situations this can be prevented by configuring your virtual server to use a fixed MAC address. If this solution is not appropriate NDS offers an alternative: a PADS4 cloud license. With a PADS4 cloud license your PADS4 Server will no longer look at hardware characteristics. Instead the system will use the Internet to connect every hour with the License Server of NDS to validate your PADS4 licenses. Although this will make the PADS4 activation independent of hardware changes, please note that it requires a stable Internet connection. Also, because of dependencies on third parties NDS cannot guarantee a 100% uptime of its License Server yet. For these reasons the recommended method for activation is still the one that s based on your hardware characteristics. Actions when a reactivation is needed * Contact our sales department in case your system needs to be reactivated. Provide them with the PADS4 Product license Key (The best is to send an to : sales@netdisplaysystems.com), they will allow you to activate the installation again. Please contact us by phone in case of emergency. The grace period is 7 days. So the system will work for a week after this incident which gives the system admin enough time to reactivate the system. 96 Configuration of PADS After you have successfully installed and activated the PADS4 software you can best configure PADS4 to meet your exact requirements. In this section Using Microsoft Active Directory Explains how you can link your PADS4 system to active directory for central user management. Using command line arguments Explains how you can use command line arguments to start the key PADS4 applications with specific program settings. Using Microsoft Windows Group Policies for the Desktop Viewer Explains how you can control the working environment for PADS4 Desktop Viewers from a central location. Page 96 of 142

Using Microsoft Active Directory Many organizations use Microsoft Active Directory to centrally manage the user accounts of their employees. With the Active Directory connection of PADS4 you can make optimal use of this information. N O T E PADS4 c an wor k with your exis ting Ac tive Dir ec tor y s tr uc tur e 'as it is ' and d oes n't r eq uir e any ad jus tments to or g aniz ational units or us er g r oups in Ac tive Dir ec tor y. After setting up a connection with Active Directory, you can beside 'normal' PADS4 users create socalled LDAP users in PADS4. These users are automatically linked to user accounts in active directory. When a user logs on with an LDAP user name, then the PADS4 system will automatically use the credentials stored inactive Directory. When the user name or password of the user is changed in Active Directory this is automatically taken over by the PADS4 system. If a user account is disabled in Active Directory then the user can no longer logon to the PADS4 applications. When the user is removed from Active Directory it will also automatically be removed from the PADS4 system. If the credentials that you have specified for PADS4 server to access Active Directory have limited permissions, then the updates in Active Directory might not be taken over by PADS4 instantly, but will only become effective after a restart of the PADS4 Server. Memberships of user groups, permissions and, license assignment are all done in PADS4 for all users, including LDAP users. If an LDAP user is removed from PADS4, it will NOT be removed from Active Directory. When the connection with Active Directory is disabled in PADS4, then the existing LDAP users that have been defined in PADS4 remain exist. This way, you can reuse them when you decide to enable Active Directory again at a later time. To configure the usage of Active Directory in PADS 1. Specify the Active Directory connection settings in the server settings window of PADS4 System Management. 2. Reboot the PADS4 Server to make the Active Directory connection settings effective. 3. Go to the Users window in PADS4 System Management and create one or more LDAP users. Make sure that the users are assigned to a user group and that you assign the right licenses. After this the Active Directory connection is ready-to-use and users can logon with one of the specified LDAP user accounts. Page 97 of 142

Using Microsoft Windows Group Policies (for Desktop Viewer) Many organizations use Microsoft Group Policies to centrally manage settings for the users. With the Group Policies of Microsoft you can centrally manage the Desktop Viewer settings. PADS4 has implemented group policies for the Desktop Viewer application to allow the administrator to specify the settings from a central location and push these settings towards 1 or more users or user groups. The policies set by the administrator are automatically detected by the Desktop Viewer options window and those options are disabled in the user interface. This way it is possible to push a set of predefined settings towards users, and still give them the opportunity to change some settings locally. The pushed settings are stored in the registry under: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Net Display Systems\PADS4 The 'normal settings' are stored in the registry under: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Net Display Systems\PADS4 To configure the usage of Group Policies for PADS4 Desktop Viewers Installation PADS4 Server First Install PADS4 Server (or more components, but the policy files are installed along with the Server installation). Install Group Policy Template file Copy PADS4.admx from C:\Program Files\Net Display Systems\PADS4\PolicyDefinitions to the Domain Policy Definitions directory on the domain server (usually: \\<FQDN>\SYSVOL\<FQDN>\Policies\PolicyDefinitions) Policy Translation File Copy PADS4.adml from C:\Program Files\Net Display Systems\PADS4\PolicyDefinitions to the Domain Policy Definitions Language directory on the domain server (usually: \\<FQDN>\SYSVOL\<FQDN>\Policies\PolicyDefinitions\en-US) Microsoft Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) Open the Group Policy Management Console application and next open the Group Policy Editor. 136 9. Click Finish to close the wizard. Things to consider after removing the installation from your computer When you've removed PADS4 from your computer, there are some issues to be considered. There are some files of the PADS4 installation that are not automatically removed from your computer. This includes the PADS4database (pads4.sdf) and a number of.xml files with program settings. To make sure that the PADS4 software is completely removed you can best manually remove the folder C:\ProgramData\ PADS4 and all of its subfolders after uninstalling the PADS4 software. With removing the installation only files that have been installed by the PADS4 installation program itself can be removed. Files that have been created afterwards with using the PADS4 software (like.padsx files with the designed presentations) are not removed and will have to be removed manually afterwards. The uninstall routine will also NOT uninstall the Microsoft.NET framework. If you want to have this removed from your computer as well you should uninstall this separately. However, please be Page 136 of 142

careful with this, because there might be other applications on your computer that use this Microsoft component. Page 137 of 142

Troubleshooting A lot of effort has been put into PADS4 to make it easier to trace and backtrack the cause of problems in the PADS4 installation, if any occur. In this section Detailed error messages Describes the new PADS4 error messages in detail. PADS4 Logging Describes the way PADS4 keeps track of its own log messages. PADS4 Black Box Describes the mechanism to bundle all PADS4 error information into one compact package to be sent to Net Display Systems for inspection. Microsoft Event Viewer Describes the standard Windows method to inspect the status of the PADS4 Server. Page 138 of 142

Detailed error messages With PADS4 we have made the descriptions of the messages as specific as possible. This should simplify working with PADS4 and pinpoint any causes if an error occurs. An example of a detailed error message Below an example is given of a message box that contains a detailed error message. It contains the error, a description and details. All can be attached to the Windows Clipboard and put in an message that you can send to your support contact person, if the error proves to be to complex to handle yourself. Page 139 of 142
