3 HD AEC Full Duplex Demo (STM32F4) Quick Start Guide 1. Introduction The purpose of this QSG is to give an overview of the hardware, software, set-up and test requirements for the Adaptive Digital HD AEC Full Duplex STM32F4 Demo. This demo demonstrates the performance of the Adaptive Digital HD AEC running on an ARM Cortex - M4 device. This demo uses (2) STM32F407 Discovery boards configured to provide full duplex audio communication between each other. This demo allows the HD AEC to be enabled and disabled for evaluation. This demo can be easily set-up and run with default parameters. 2. Requirements 2.3 Hardware - STM32F407G-DISC1 Development Boards (2) - STM32F4DISCOVERY STM32F4DIS-BB Base Board (2) - Speakers with male jack connector (2) - Ethernet cable (1) - Windows PC (2000, XP, Vista, 7) - USB type A to fmini-b cable (2) - USB AC Power Adapter (2) - AC Power Source, or PC USB ports 2.4 Software - Adaptive Digital Software: Binary Library: Adaptive Digital Technologies Inc. Discovery STM32F407 HD AEC Full Duplex Demo Test NOTE: This binary needs to be downloaded to both STM32F407 discovery boards. Important! To perform this task the STM32 ST-LINK Utility needs to be installed! - Utility Tool: STSW-LINK004: STM32 ST-LINK utility release STLink utility tool for STM32 microcontroller families programming. 3. Getting Started All Software must be loaded onto each STM32 Board. The software is loaded via a PC connected to the STM32 board using a USB type A to fmini-b cable, see Figure Download the provided Adaptive Digital Demo S/W. Save to desktop. 3.2 Install STSW-LINK004: STM32 ST-LINK utility release 4.0 a. Find the below the link to download the STLink utility tool for STM32 microcontroller families programming. In this link you can find the following references: UM0892: STM32 ST-LINK utility software description RN0078: STM32 ST-LINK utility release 4.0 The software tool: STSW-LINK004 1

4 b. Install STSW-LINK004: STM32 ST-LINK utility release 4.0 per the given instructions. 3.3 Download the Adaptive Digital Demo S/W to both boards. NOTE: This cannot be done unless the STM32 ST-LINK Utility is installed Attach STM32F407-DISC1 to Expansion base board STM32F4DIS-BB >> Fig Connect Discovery boards to PC using USB type A to fmini-b cable as illustrated above!important! Update firmware. STM32ST-Link Utility ST LINK > Firmware update > Device Connect > Yes Both boards need to be updated. 3.5 Load Adaptive Digital demonstration software into the ST-Link utility Target > Automatic Mode operation. Browse for file location C:\Users\xxxxxxx\Desktop\STM32F4\ADT_Audio.bin file. Action > Flash programing (box checked by default) > Start 2

Start-up Demo 4.1 Set-up Equipment Set-up equipment as shown in Figure Configure Address of STBoard2 NOTE: The boards communicate over Ethernet, and therefore must have unique IP addresses assigned to them. By default, the STBoards will come up with an IP address of and a destination IP address of To allow both boards to communicate to one another, one board (STBoard1) can come up in the default configuration, and the other (STBoard2) needs to be configured to have an IP address of and destination IP address of a. The blue button on the STBoard is used as the configuration switch. b. Important! Hold down the blue button while powering-up to swap the IP and destination IP address factory setting of STBoard2. STDemo1 will have the orange, green and red LEDs blinking, STDemo2 will have blue, green and red LEDs blinking. NOTE: The black button on the ST board is a reset and should not be pressed unless the intent is to reset/power cycle the board. After powering up, STDemo1 will have an orange LED flashing. Powering up STDemo2 with the configuration (blue) button held down will result in the blue LED flashing. At this point the demo is should be ready to run. 4.3 Start Demo a. Press the blue configuration button on each board. The green LED (TX) will flash on each board - this indicates packets are being sent over the interface to the other board. When data is received, the red LED (RX) will flash. At this point, full duplex communication is established. The audio present and received by the microphone on one board will be transmitted over ethernet to be played out on the other board. 4

7 NOTE: By default, the demo comes up without AEC enabled. This should be apparent by the presence of significant echo when the audio is being sent and played over the network. The LEDs will also indicate that the demo is running without AEC, by only having the 3 LEDs blinking. 4.4 Enable the HDAEC a. Press the blue configuration button on each board. The fourth LED should blink. b. When all 4 LEDs are blinking (blue, orange, green and red) on both boards, full duplex AEC is enabled. c. Repeated pressing of the blue configuration button will enable/disable the HD AEC for performance testing purposes. d. Black button will reset board to the default configuration. Note: To best demonstrate the performance of our HD AEC software, the configured boards should be located in two separate rooms, ideally with a closed door between the units. A direct ethernet connection (non-switched or routed) allows for demonstration of the software up to distances of 100 meters. 5

Boards will have to be reset by pressing the Black Reset button, and reconfigured (see sect. 4.2 Configure IP Address of STBoard2), for continued use.
