3 Section 1: Executive Summary NTP Software VFM determines what data can be migrated. NTP Software redefines the economics of data movement by being event and policy driven in real time, rather than requiring repeated scans of the entire file system, thus greatly helping to reduce storagerelated costs. With VFM, you can use policies to migrate data automatically and continuously based on data attributes such as age, size, or type. But you can also provide that control to individual users and let them decide when to move their data. Users understand the value of their data and when it s ready to be moved. 4 Section 2: VFM System Requirements and Components The following are the minimal necessary specifications to run NTP Software VFM: Component Cores RAM Disk Space IIS Server 1 4 GB 50 GB SQL DB Server 2 4 GB 200 GB Task Service 1 2 GB 150 MB Core Tiering Engine 1 2 GB 150 MB Required for all installations: In order for VFM to function, a version of the VFM Administrative Web Site (a.k.a VFM Admin) must first be installed, which will create the Database tables, then at least one Task Service and one Core Tiering Engine must be installed to identify and tier files, and the Recovery Portal. 1) Administration Web Site for VFM for one or more Secondary storage platforms Examples o NTP Software VFM Administration Web Site for CIFS o NTP Software VFM Administration Web Site for AmazonS3 o NTP Software VFM Administration Web Site for S3Connector 2) NTP Software VFM Task Service for each primary storage platform Examples: o NTP Software VFM Task Service for NetApp o NTP Software VFM Task Service for EMC o NTP Software VFM Task Service for Generic o Proxy Service required ONLY for EMC VNX host/primary storage platform 3) Core Tiering Engine o Referenced as CTE 4) Recovery Portal o This is the Web Portal for file recovery from the Database Copyright NTP Software 4

Windows Web Server - IIS When installing the Windows Web Server (IIS) Role and Features it s important to: Security Features Ensure that Basic Authentication and Windows Authentication are installed. Adding all the Security Features is ideal if not against corporate policies or best practices Copyright NTP Software 6

7 Application Development Features Make sure that the following 5 features are enabled:.net Extensibility 3.5,.NET Extensibility 4.5, ASP (with ISAPI Extensions and Filters), ASP.NET 3.5, ASP.NET MS SQL Server File Reporter and File Auditor will support installations to instances on MS SQL Server 2008 or When Installing SQL Server 2008, 2012, or Mixed mode authentication must be enabled on SQL Server at installation. 2. Assure that Reporting Services are installed. 3. The Remote Connection to the SQL Server should be enabled. 4. A Service Account must be available that has the following permissions enabled on the File Reporter and File Auditor databases and report services: a. Systems Administrator (sa) b. db_datareader c. 8 2.3 Ports required for communication: From To CTE/TS Server DC SQL Webserver Prim Storage 135 CTE/TS Server 3268, , /443 Webserver 1433, 1434 Section 3: VFM Installation Sequence First Time Installations: Step Description STOP! Before you begin: please confirm that we have a service account (or accounts) with the following conditions: 1. Local administrator on the server that VFM web components will run on 2. Systems Administrator (SA) in the SQL Database that VFM will run on a. if SQL Server is installed on a dedicated server, then local administrative rights on that server will allow for the use of Integrated Security 3. SQL Server must be installed with mixed mode authentication 4. IIS must be installed with Basic and windows authentication turned on under security 5. A service account must have full read/write rights on each of the host storage devices 1 Install the VFM Administrative Website (VFM Admin) on the Web Server See document Installation Guide NTP Software VFM Administration Web Site for {tiering target} VFM Admin for applicable platform is installed first and will also create the databases. o Here is where the policies are created and primary and secondary storage is configured 2 Install the Recovery Portal on the Web Server See document NTP Software VFM Installation Guide Recovery Portal o This is how the storage administrator can restore files via the database 3 Install the VFM Core Tiering Engine on the server near the storage See document Installation Guide NTP Software VFM Core Tiering Engine 4 Install the Task Service for Source Server on the server near the storage. Upgrading the Installations: Step Description 1 Stop the VFM Task Service to avoid the possibility of having to reboot. o A reboot is not normally required except when a file is in-use 2 Upgrade the VFM Admin first, which will also upgrade the VFM databases. 3 Upgrade all other components in any order.
