1 FRAMEWORK VERSION 3.0 NETWORK INSTALLATION INSTALLING MICROSOFT STEP BY STEP INTERACTIVE TRAINING SOFTWARE The purpose of this document is to: Describe the components of Microsoft Interactive Training and how they work together Present the decisions that need to be made before installing Microsoft Interactive Training in your organization How Does Microsoft Interactive Training Work? Microsoft Step by Step Interactive includes three main components: Database: Stores the user name, user password, any pre-assessments taken (including scores), the last course attempted, and any quizzes taken (including scores). This database can be a DBF or SQL Server database Courses: A collection of lessons, topics, pre-assessments, and quizzes with training objectives Client Player: Client workstations used to complete the course To access and use the training, a Client Player user: Logs on to the database using an intranet connection Takes a course Logs off the database Database Course Content ODBC System DSN Admin Console Reporting Quiz Scores Pre-Assessment Scores User Name User Password User Placemark Content Server Client Player Macromedia Flash Player Framework Version 3.0 Network Installation Page 1 of 5

2 Decisions Required Before Installation There are several issues you must consider before you can proceed with the installation. Content Delivery Course content can be delivered either through a LAN or through an intranet (using a URL). LAN Course content will be delivered by a company file server to the user through the existing network in the office and experienced through a 16MB client player. URL The course content will be delivered by an Internet Information Server (IIS) Web Server to the user through the existing intranet in the office and experienced through a 16 MB client player. 3 Database Selection The database used is dependent on the content delivery method. A DBF database is used for LAN delivery while SQL Server databases are used with URL delivery. DBF DBF databases are automatically created during installation. Database Location The database can be stored in any location in accordance with your corporate policies. The connection to the database is controlled through an ODBC System DSN connection. This connector stores the location of the database and points the Admin Console and user information to the database for storage. The default location for a DBF database is C:\program files\ MSPress\MPITraining\Database. Database Content The database stores information about the user logon ID and password, Pre-assessment and Quiz scores, and the user s last lesson marker. This marker allows the user to continue training at the location where they previously stopped. SQL Server: SQL Server databases must be created before installation begins. Database Connection There are two methods to connect to your SQL Server database: Using Windows NT domain authentication: Windows NT domain authentication uses permissions attached to your user logon. The logon is determined by your company policies Using SQL authentication: SQL Server has its own special login procedure for connecting to the database. This logon is usually controlled by the owner of the SQL Server databases and permission must be obtained to connect to the database The SQL database can be stored in any network location.
