2 1. Overview elux Live is a USB image and provides three options: Evaluation of a client using all elux features. The client is booted directly from the USB stick without installing elux. Recovery: One of the boot options allows you to install elux on the client. Erasure of all data from the data medium. These functions are provided as boot options when you boot a client with the USB elux Live Stick. The elux Live Stick can be created for elux RP and elux RT for all supported versions. System requirements Creating the elux Live Stick PC running Windows 7 or later versions to run StickWizz.exe on The StickWizz program runs on a non-virtualized Windows system only. 4 3. Creating the elux Live Stick Requires see System requirements 1. Download the elux XX Live Stick package for the required elux version from our portal at 2. Connect the USB stick to a USB port. Note that the Windows Explorer should not be opened on the USB drive. 3. Unpack the downloaded ZIP file. The ZIP archive contains the Live stick image as DD file, a describing text file and the Stick- Wizz.exe program. 4. Run the StickWizz.exe program Verify if the appropriate DD file and USB drive are selected. The checksum is calculated and compared to the one provided. 6. Click Write. 1 The display language depends on the selected Windows date and time formats. 4

6 4. Features of the elux Live Stick 4.1. Evaluating with the elux Live Stick For evaluation purposes, you can boot the system directly from the elux Live Stick. The operating system and the data saved on your hard disk will remain completely unaffected. 1. Check the system requirements. 2. Configure the BIOS of your Thin Client for boot from USB. 3. Boot the system with the elux Live Stick connected to a USB port. 4. To call the boot menu, during the boot process, press F12 or the relevant key specified by the supplier. 5. On the elux Live boot menu, select the Boot elux XX from USB stick option. The evaluation via live-boot is started without installing elux. Right after starting the elux live system, the programs Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View are shown in the Start menu. Note You can use all elux functions, however, changes are not saved. In evaluation mode, the client cannot be managed with Scout Enterprise Installing elux Requires PC, notebook or Thin Client providing a boot option from USB HDD 2 GB memory space minimum on the flash memory / hard disk 1. Important During installation, all data and the entire operating system are deleted from the hard disk (system recovery). All elux and Scout Enterprise Management license information is kept as is. After the installation is completed, the client restarts. Depending on the network configuration, the device is automatically assigned to a Scout Enterprise Server via DHCP or DNS, or the First Configuration Wizard starts. 6

8 4.3. Cleaning the hard disk The third option in the boot menu Clean hard disk deletes all data on the flash medium. This option is useful when putting a device out of service or resaling. However, it is not required for the installation of elux. Important If an elux license is linked to the Host ID on the flash medium and the same license was activated directly on the client without the use of Scout Enterprise, the elux license is also deleted. 8

9 5. Customization of the elux Live Stick 5. Customization of the elux Live Stick The elux Live Stick contains the folder container that holds the saved elux software packages and the image file recovery.idf. By using the ELIAS tool, you can modify the container. ELIAS is part of the Scout Enterprise Management Suite and is included in the standard installation process. This way, you can install an individually configured elux. Note Do not change the image file name recovery.idf on your elux Live Stick. Only the recovery feature of the elux Live Stick can be modified. The live-boot feature of the elux Live Stick cannot be changed and remains on factory default Preparing for customization Note ELIAS is compatible with Windows 7 or later versions. When using a virtualized Windows version, you can also customize the elux Live Stick using an RDP connection with drive mapping. 1. Download the latest version of Scout Enterprise from (registration required). 2. Perform the Scout Enterprise Management Suite installation including ELIAS which is required for customizing. Note ELIAS is part of the standard installation of the Scout Enterprise Management Suite. To install ELIAS exclusively, choose custom installation. For further information, see Installing Scout Enterprise Management Suite in the Installation guide. 3. Plug the elux Live Stick already created into an available USB port. 9

6.1. Customizing the elux Live Stick 1. Open ELIAS by clicking Start menu > Scout Enterprise or by using the Scout Enterprise Console (View > ELIAS...). 2. In ELIAS, click Container > Select.

In ELIAS, click Container > Select... and open the container.ini file in the UC_RP directory of your local web server. 3. If the IDF that you want to transfer to your elux Live Stick does already exist, select Image > Open..., browse the UC_RP directory of your local web server and open the required recovery.idf file. 4. If the required IDF does not yet exist, select Image > New and create a new image definition file. For further information, see Creating an IDF in the ELIAS guide. 5. Click Image > Export... The Export dialog opens and shows the destination file as recovery.idf. Note The file must be saved on the USB stick under the name recovery.idf. 6. Click Browse and select the Container directory on the USB storage device. 7. If you first need to provide free space on the USB stick, in the Export dialog, select the Delete packages not defined in the IDF from the target directory option. 8. Start exporting with OK. 9.
