1 FUJITSU Cloud Service S5 Exporting a Windows Server VM The following guide describes the process of exporting a Windows 2008 or 2012 virtual machine from the FUJITSU Cloud Service S5 platform and importing it into a virtualized environment The guide will assist those looking to export a complete Windows 2008/2012 VM from the platform (including data and configuration) onto VMWare, Hyper-V or other suitable Virtual Platform. It will also reassure those customers who have concerns over long-term vendor lock-in. Although the below steps show the process for a Windows 2008 VM, it is the same process for a Windows 2012 VM. What is Involved: Imaging the disk drives of a virtual machine to a single VHD file for each drive Copying the files to an external environment over the Internet Preparing the VHD files for the required virtual environment Creating a new virtual machine using these files in the customer s external environment Note: Post Import management of the VM is not in scope of this guide. It is the customer s responsibility to verify the health of the imported VM, update any drivers and reconfigure the VM in its new environment. The customer will also be responsible for re-licensing the operating system and the ongoing costs of such a license, as this will no longer be provided by the monthly platform VM charge. General Notes: It is recommended to record or change the initial platform generated password to something memorable Record IP address configuration as DHCP will not be available It may be beneficial to resize the system C: using MS Disk Management (and any D drive) to remove excess empty space. This will save time and costs when backing up, exporting and reconfiguring. The unused space can also be used to create a new temporary destination drive for the VHD file, although ensure this drive is excluded from the imaging process. NOTE: Make sure you have enough free space to save the backup image to. (Default Disk2Vhd file size GB). If required, add an extra data disk as a temporary drive to hold the VHD file. Install and Execute Disk2VHD Utility On the Virtual Machine being imaged: 1. Download Disk2Vhd utility from 2. Uncompress the downloaded file and double click disk2vhd.exe to run. 3. On first run, click Agree to license agreement 4. In the resulting utility window, specify a suitable location for the backup files, ensure the drives to be imaged are ticked, including the System Reserved. Remember to untick any temporary drives assigned for the purpose of holding the VHD file. Date: 08/08/2016 Page 1 of 10

2 5. Click Create to begin the process. This may take some time to complete. Copy VM Image Files to the External System These files now need to be copied to the desired external system. This could be via either the remote desktop connection utility or a FTP server installed in the virtual environment. FTP transfer will be several times quicker than RDP, but will require addition configuration of the FTP service. See the Library section of the portal for guides for configuring FTP. Prepare VM Image files for External Virtual Platform Disk2Vhd by default saves the image files in the Microsoft Virtual PC / Hypervisor / Oracle VM VirtualBox format VHD. If you have Hyper-V or Virtual PC, then no preparation is required and the VHD file can be imported directly. Please see Hyper-V / Virtual PC product documentation if required, as this is out of scope of this guide. In order to use these files in a VMWare environment, the format of these files need to be converted to VMDK. This can be achieved using the free convertor tool StarWindSoftware Image Convertor. This should be performed on a suitable machine in the external environment, where the image files will be imported. 1. Register and download the utility from 2. Run StarWindConverter.exe 3. On Welcome screen, click Next 4. Select I accept license agreement and click Next 5. Accept default install location and click Next 6. Accept default folder location and click Next 7. Click Next, accepting to create desktop icon 8. Click Install to begin the process and Finish to complete 9. 3 12. Accept Destination Image Format or change as required and click Next 13. Accept default Disk Type and click Next 14. Specify a destination location and click Next 15. The conversion process will then begin which may take some time Date: 08/08/2016 Page 3 of 10

4 16. Repeat steps 9 to 15 for any other additional data disks. Prepare VM Image files for External Virtual Platform The follow steps assume VMWare Workstation is used as the Virtual Platform. Please consult the Virtual Platform documentation if an alternative product is used. 1. Within VMWare Workstation, select File New Virtual Machine 2. In the resulting Wizard, select the Custom (advanced) option. 3. Accept the default or specify the hardware compatibility and click Next 4. Select I will install the operating system later and click Next Date: 08/08/2016 Page 4 of 10

5 5. Specify the Operating System e.g. Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or 2012 and click Next 6. Accept the default or specify a server name and location and click Next 7. Accept the default or customise the Processor Configuration and click Next Date: 08/08/2016 Page 5 of 10

6 8. Accept the default Memory requirements or customise and click Next 9. Accept the default Network configuration or update, and click Next 10. Accept the default I/O adapter types or update, and click Next Date: 08/08/2016 Page 6 of 10

7 11. Specify Use an existing virtual disk option and click Next 12. In resulting window, click Browse and select the first converted file (which will be the system drive), Open and Next 13. 8 15. To import any additional data disks into the VM, right click on the newly created virtual machine within VMWare and select Settings 16. Click Add in resulting window Date: 08/08/2016 Page 8 of 10

9 17. Select Hard Disk and click Next 18. Select Use and existing virtual disk and click Disk 19. Browse to the additional data disk file and click Open and then Next 20. 10 Power On the Virtual Machine The virtual machine can now be powered on and booted into the virtual environment. It should then be configured and managed as appropriately, including the network connections which will no longer be able to contact the platform DHCP, DNS, NTP, or WSUS servers.
