Introduction The telex terminal is an application providing an easy-to-use operator interface for the Inmarsat SES (Ship Earth Station) unit. The SES unit has a command-line interface for sending and receiving telex messages. The telex terminal application extends this interface to a windows oriented interface that enables the operator to work with stored telex messages, a telex message editor and a stored list of registered telex subscribers. Telex messages received from other subscribers can be saved on permanent storage, edited and used in constructing new telex messages. The telex terminal application makes it easy to work with template messages where only a fraction of the message changes from one transmission to another. Templates can be constructed using the telex editor, stored on permanent storage and drawn from this storage to serve as the basis for the transmission of a standard report. Documentation overview The documentation for the telex terminal application consists of this operator's manual and the on-line help available from within the telex terminal program. For an explanation of the on-line help system available in the telex terminal program, see chapter 7: Using on-line help. Typographic conventions The tabulator key and arrow keys are indicated as follows: TAB, Arrow- Down, Arrow-Up, Arrow-Left, Arrow-Right. Whenever a special key combination is required, as when two keys need to be activated simultaneously, + is used to indicate that the two keys should be pressed simultaneously. For example, Press Alt+O to choose the OK button, means press and hold the Alt key while pressing the O key. V

Reader s guide This operator's manual is divided into the following chapters: Chapter 1: Learning the basics describes the components of the telex terminal application. The chapter gives an introduction to the primary functions of the application: sending, receiving and printing telex messages. Chapter 2: Working with the SES unit describes the telex terminal functions that work closely with the SES unit. The chapter describes how the important working parameters in the SES unit are set and how the SES unit service functions can be used to inspect the status and logs available in the SES unit. Chapter 3: Distress describes how to make a distress call. Chapter 4: Using the telex editor describes all aspects of using the specialised telex editor. How to enter text, move around in the text and use cut, copy, paste and clear commands to move or delete blocks of text is described in this chapter. The search and replace functions are described along with a couple of special functions to insert position, date and time obtained from the SES unit. Chapter 5: Managing the desktop describes how the windows on the desktop can be managed using resize, move, tile and cascade commands. The chapter explains how one can browse the windows on the desktop, close individual windows or close all the windows on the desktop. Setting preferences for the attached printer is also explained in this chapter. Finally, there is a section about how one can configure the application according to a certain working environment. Chapter 6: Using the dialling directory describes the functions available for maintaining a directory of telex numbers often used. The dialling directory enables the operator to maintain a permanent list of names and associated telex numbers. The chapter describes how new subscribers are added to the list, how existing entries are modified and how superfluous entries can be deleted from the list. Chapter 7: Using on-line help describes the mechanics behind the on-line help system. In this chapter, it is explained how to obtain help. Also, it is explained how one can find help on a specific topic, and how one can browse the entire help-system. VI

1 Learning the basics 1 Learning the basics The telex terminal is an easy-to-use operator interface for the Inmarsat SES unit. The telex terminal enables the operator to send, receive and print telex messages and manage the SES unit. The following paragraphs outline the basic operations that can be carried out by the telex terminal. 1.1 The desktop The working environment provided by the telex terminal application is the desktop. The desktop is divided into three visible areas: the menu bar at the top, the window area in the middle, and the status line at the bottom. Many menu items also offer dialogue boxes which appear in the window area. Before going into details with the different menus we will take a look at the more general components. The menu bar is the primary access to all the menu commands. The menu bar is visible at all times and can always be reached. To activate the menu bar press F10, and the first menu item will be highlighted. The highlighted menu item is referred to as the currently selected menu. To reveal the submenu for any of the menu items on the menu bar, press Arrow-down. If a menu command is followed by an ellipsis ( ), choosing that menu command displays a dialogue box. If the command is followed by an arrow, the command leads to another submenu (a pop-up menu). If the menu command has neither an ellipsis nor an arrow, the action corresponding to the command will occur as soon as the menu item is chosen. To select a menu command use any of the following methods: Press F10. This makes the menu bar active; the next keystroke will relate to the items on the menu bar. Use Arrow-Left and Arrow-Right keys to display the desired menu. Then press Enter to reveal the menu items. As a shortcut, just press the highlighted letter of the menu title to select a particular menu. For example, to select the File menu when the menu bar is active, press F. This shortcut can also be used even if the menu bar is not currently active. For example, to select the SES Unit menu when the menu bar is not active, press Alt+S. 1-1

1 Learning the basics TELEX over SATELLITE Use Arrow-Down and Arrow-Up keys to select the desired menu command. Then press Enter. Again as a shortcut, just press the highlighted letter of a menu command to choose it once the submenu is displayed. At this point, the telex terminal application carries out the command, displays a dialogue box, or displays another submenu. Figure 1-1 The telex terminal desktop Note that not all menu commands are available at all times. Some menu commands are disabled when it makes no sense to choose them. It is possible to request on-line help for menu commands that are currently unavailable. Besides the shortcuts mentioned above for selecting menu commands, the telex terminal application offers a number of quick ways to choose menu commands and perform actions in dialogue boxes. These shortcuts are usually related to the highlighted letters that appear in either menus or dialogue boxes and is activated by holding down the Alt key while pressing the highlighted letter. Many menu items have related hot keys; one- or two-key shortcuts that immediately activate a command or dialogue box. One example of such a hot key is F3, which will display the Open File dialogue box

1 Learning the basics Most of the work in the telex terminal application is carried out in a window. A window is a screen area that can be opened, closed, moved, resized, zoomed, titled and overlapped. There can be many windows open on the desktop, but only one window can be active at a time. The active window is the one where the current work is carried out. Any command chosen or text typed generally applies only to the active window. The active window can be spotted easily: It is the only one that has a double-lined border around it. If the windows on the desktop are overlapping, the active window is always the window on top of all the others (the one in front). Two types of windows can be displayed on the desktop: Telex editor windows A communication window There can only be one communication window whereas there can be several telex editor windows open at a time. A telex editor window is used to prepare telex messages for transmission. The communication window shows the ongoing transmission of telex messages and can be used for immediate transmission of short messages. The status line appears at the bottom of the screen; it Is a reminder of basic keystrokes and shortcuts applicable at the moment in the active window. Informs the operator about the current status of the link to the SES unit. The status is displayed at the far right end of the status bar. Offers one-line hints on any selected menu command and some dialogue items. The status line changes as windows are switched or activities change. When a menu title or command has been selected, the status line changes to display a one-line summary of the function of the selected item. Another status message appears in the upper right corner of the screen. This status message displays the number of telex messages contained in the receive log. The receive log contains received telex messages that have not been read by the operator. On the left side of the log status the printer status is displayed. The status will be Printer On-line if a printer is detected and Printer Off-line if not

1 Learning the basics TELEX over SATELLITE If a menu command has an ellipsis after it ( ), the command opens a dialogue box. A dialogue box is a convenient way to view and set multiple options. Changing settings in a dialogue box may involve working with up to five different types of onscreen controls: radio buttons, check boxes, action buttons, input boxes and list boxes. In general, choosing the action button OK in a dialogue box is equivalent to accepting the choices made and putting the dialogue box away. Choosing the action button Cancel is equivalent to disregarding any changes made and putting the dialogue box away. The Esc key can always be used as a shortcut for Cancel, even if no Cancel button appears in the dialogue box. To select an item in a dialogue box, press the Alt key and the highlighted letter of the item to activate it. For example Alt+O selects the OK action button. Press Tab or Shift-Tab to move forward or back from one item to another in a dialogue box. Each element is highlighted as it becomes selected or active. Dialogue boxes often have a default action button, which is highlighted in a different colour. Pressing Enter can activate this default action button. Another action button can be selected by means of the Tab key. Tabbing to another action button makes that button the default one. Check boxes are used when a group of options can be selected independent of one another. When a check box item is selected, an [X] appears in it. An empty check box item [ ] indicates that the option is off or deselected. To set a check box item on, highlight the check box item using the Tab key, then press the space bar. Alternatively, press Alt followed by the highlighted letter in the check box item text. If several check boxes appear in a group, use tabbing to highlight the group. Once the group is selected use the Arrow-Up and Arrow-Down keys to select a check box item within the group, and then press the space bar to toggle its setting on or off. Radio buttons are used when a group of options are mutually exclusive, meaning that only one of the options can be selected at a time. Radio buttons are so called because they act just like the buttons on a car radio. When a radio button item is selected, an ( ) appears. An empty radio button item ( ) indicates that the option is off or deselected. Radio buttons always come in groups, and only one radio button can be on in a group at a time. To set a radio button on, use tabbing to highlight the group. Once the group is selected, use the Arrow- Down and Arrow-Up keys to select a radio button within the group, and then 1-4

1 Learning the basics press the space bar to toggle its setting on or off. Alternatively, press Alt followed by the highlighted letter in the radio button text. Press Tab or Shift- Tab to leave the group with the new radio button chosen. Input boxes are used for entering text and numbers. Most basic text-editing keys work in the text box, such as arrow keys Arrow-Left and Arrow-Right, Home, and End; and insert/overwrite is toggled by Ins. Some input boxes allow for more text than will fit into the visible area available. If there is more text than that which is shown in the box, arrow heads appear at the end. Click the arrow heads to scroll the text. When input boxes are used for entering numbers, the allowed range of characters is automatically confined to digits. If an input box has a down-arrow to its right, there is a history list associated with that input box. Press Arrow-Down to read the list, then press Enter to select an item from it. The list will contain text typed into this box the last few times it has been used. One example of such an input box is the Find text box in the Find dialogue box. This input box has such a history list, which keeps track of the text searched for previously. If one wants to repeat a search for text entered previously, press Arrow-Down. Items on the history list can also be edited. Press Esc to exit from the history list without making a selection. List boxes are used to present a variable number of items for inspection or selection. The list box supports scrolling through and selection from the variable-length list without leaving the dialogue box. The list box is made active by choosing the highlighted letter of the list title, or by pressing Tab until it is highlighted. Once the list box is selected, one can scroll through the list using the Arrow-Down and Arrow-Up keys. There are also a few shortcuts available for manoeuvring the list. To move to the first item on the list, press Ctrl+PgUp. To move to the last item on the list, press Ctrl+PgDn. To move to the first item displayed in the current visible section of the list, press Home. To move to the last item displayed in the current visible section of the list, press End. This ends the general explanation of the desktop and the associated elements. The next paragraph will focus on the preparation of a telex message. 1-5

1 Learning the basics TELEX over SATELLITE 1.2 Preparing a new telex Telex messages are written using the telex editor. The telex editor is specialised for editing telex messages using the ITA-2 character set. Figure 1-2 Editing a new telex message To create a new telex message, select New from the main menu item File. Press Alt+F followed by N. A window for the new telex message will appear on the desktop. Initially the window will have the title Untitled. The title will change to reflect the name given to this telex message when the telex message is saved for the first time. In the editor window, one can enter text just as if one were using a typewriter. To end a line and begin typing on a new line, press Enter. When one has entered enough lines to fill the window, the top line scrolls off the window. This does not mean that the line is lost, one can move back and forth in the text by scrolling commands that are described later. The number of characters that can be entered on each line is limited to 69 characters. Typing past this 69-character limit will automatically wrap the last word on the line to the next line. When the telex message has been entered in the editor, it should be saved in a permanent storage location. To save the telex message select Save from the File menu, press Alt+F followed by S or just F2. Since the telex message 1-6

1 Learning the basics has not been saved before, the telex terminal application will request a name and storage location for the message. To this end the Save File As dialogue box will appear. Figure 1-3 Save file as dialogue box The Save File As dialogue box requests a name and storage location for the new telex message. To save the telex message in a permanent storage, enter the name, optionally with drive and directory, and choose OK. Press Alt+O or Enter to activate the OK button. The telex message is saved and the editor window is updated with the name given the telex message. 1-7

1 Learning the basics TELEX over SATELLITE 1.3 Sending a telex file To send the telex message to another telex subscriber, select Send File from the File menu. Press Alt+F followed by E. When the Send File command is activated it will request the number of the telex subscriber to be called. The Call dialogue box will appear. Figure 1-4 Call dialogue box Type the number of the telex subscriber to be called. The input box accepts digits and format characters. Format characters can be right and left parentheses and spaces. The format characters are stripped from the number before it is used in the SES unit. When the number is correct, choose OK to proceed with the call. Press Alt+O or Enter to activate the OK button. As an alternative to entering the number directly, one can use the built-in dialling directory to look up the number of a registered telex subscriber. Press Alt+L to activate the Lookup button. The look-up function will display the Select Subscriber dialogue box. Figure 1-5 Select Subscriber dialogue box The Select Subscriber dialogue box presents a list of registered telex subscribers. To select a subscriber from the list, use the Arrow-Up and Arrow-Down keys to highlight the desired subscriber. When the desired

1 Learning the basics subscriber is highlighted, choose Select. Press Alt+S or Enter to active the Select button. The Select Subscriber dialogue box will disappear and the Call dialogue box will reappear with the number of the selected subscriber. Choose the OK button to proceed with the call. Press Alt+O or Enter to activate the OK button. The telex terminal will now request a connection to the selected telex subscriber through the SES unit. A status box containing information about the progressing call will appear and, the status of the SES unit, displayed in the status line, which will change from Stand-by to Calling. The subscriber number appears in the calling box immediately after the call is initiated. When the selected earth station is called it will send its identity. The identity will appear in the Earth station box. The earth station will then call the subscriber and the subscriber will send back its identity. The subscriber identity will appear in the Subscriber box. If the subscriber for some reason can not be reached the reason send by the earth station will appear in the Subscriber box. If a connection is established the status box is automatically cleared. The telex communication window will open, and transmission of the telex message will begin. The message is echoed in the telex communication window and will assuming default configuration also be printed out as it is being transmitted. When all activity in the telex communication window has ended and the message has been transmitted the call wil be terminated and call statistics such as subscriber number and duration will be printed out. Upon termination of the call, the operator will be given the opportunity to save the transmitted message. This message will include the subscribers answerback in both the beginning and the end of the transmission along the call statistic. The default storage location is the \TXS\SENT directory

1 Learning the basics TELEX over SATELLITE Figure 1-6 Telex communication window 1.4 Conversation call Making a call using the Conversation facility enables the operator to call a selected subscriber and initiate an on-air conversation. To establish a call, select Conversation from the File menu. Press Alt+F followed by C. When the Conversation command is activated, the Call dialogue box will appear, requesting the number of the telex subscriber to be called. Select the subscriber either by typing in the number of the subscriber or by using the dialling directory as described in the preceding section Sending a telex file. If a connection is established, the status box is automatically cleared and telex communication window will open. The operator must now wait for the status to change from Calling to Communicating. If the operator types anything on the keyboard before this, a Not Ready dialogue box will appear

1 Learning the basics Figure 1-7 Not ready dialogue box The dialogue box is automatically cleared when the status has changed to Communicating. After this, the system is ready for direct conversation with the called subscriber. Information typed by the operator in the telex communication window is sent directly to the receiving telex subscriber. Any information received from the called subscriber will also be reflected in the communication window. Note that text sent from the terminal is echoed as upper-case letters; text received from the called subscriber is displayed as lower- case letters. It is also possible to send the contents of a predefined telex message during a conversation call. To do so, open the wanted telex message by using the Open command from the menu item File. Send the message by selecting the Send File command available from the File menu. The message will now be sent directly to the receiving telex subscriber. The message is echoed in the telex communication window as it is being transmitted. Figure 1-8 Sending the contents of a file during a conversation call. The telex communication window is closed by using the Close command on the Window menu. Press Alt+W followed by C to activate the Close command. When the communication window is closed, the telex terminal commands the SES unit to close the connection to the called telex subscriber. When terminating the call, the operator will be given the opportunity to save the message. The default storage location is the receive log directory. If the called subscriber terminates the call, the telex message is automatically saved in the receive log directory. The telex message is given a name consisting of the current date and a sequence number. The name has the form DDMMYYnn.MSG, nn being a sequence number ranging from 00 to Receiving a telex The reception of telex messages is almost automatic with the telex terminal. When an incoming call is detected, the telex communication window is opened automatically. The contents of the incoming telex are displayed in the telex communication window as they are received. When the caller hangs up, the telex message is saved in the receive log directory. The telex message is given a name consisting of the current date and a sequence number. The name has the form DDMMYYnn.MSG, nn being a sequence number ranging from 00 to 99. The status message in the upper right corner of the screen will reflect the fact that another telex message has been received. To read the contents of a received telex message use the Open command on the File menu. Press Alt+F followed by O to activate the Open command. The Open command will display the Open file dialogue box shown below

4 Using the telex editor 4 Using the telex editor The telex editor is a specialised editor built to create and edit telex messages. The editor will only recognise characters from the ITA-2 character set, which is the character set used in exchanging telex messages via the Inmarsat SES unit. The editor is a full screen editor supporting cutting, copying, pasting and clearing of a selected block of text. Search and replace functions are also available in the telex editor. Several telex messages can be opened and edited at once. By using a clipboard it is possible to copy text between telex messages. Finally, the editor has a few specialised functions that enable the operator to insert information obtained from the SES unit. By using these functions, the operator can insert the current position, date, and time in the active telex message. 4.1 Creating a new telex message To create a new telex message, select New from the main menu item File. Press Alt+F followed by N. A window for the new telex message will appear on the desktop. Initially the window will have the title Untitled. The title will change to reflect the name given to this telex message when the telex message is saved for the first time. Note that the menu has changed to reflect the new working environment. The menu available while working in the telex editor reflects the functions available. In the editor window, one can enter text just as if one were using a typewriter. To end a line and begin typing on a new line, press Enter. When one has entered enough lines to fill the window, the top line scrolls off the window. This does not mean that the line is lost, one can move back and forth in the text by means of scrolling commands that are described later. The number of characters that can be entered on each line is limited to 69 characters. Typing past the 69-character limit will automatically move the last word on the line to the next line. 4-1

4 Using the telex editor TELEX over SATELLITE Figure 4-1 Editing a new telex message If one wants to undo some changes, there is an Undo command, which is also described later. Choose the No button, using Alt+N or Esc to prevent the telex message from being deleted. To put the Open file dialogue box way, select Cancel by pressing Esc. 4.4 Using cut, copy, paste and clear commands The Edit menu item in the telex editor provides access to cutting, copying and pasting text in the telex editor window. Mistakes can be undone using the Undo command on the Edit menu. Before these commands become active one needs to select some text. Selecting text means highlighting it. Text is selected or highlighted using one of the following actions: Press Shift while pressing any arrow key. Press Ctrl+K B to mark the start of a block. Then move the cursor to the end of the text block and press Ctrl+K K. Once a block of text has been marked, the commands in the Edit menu become active. The Cut command, Alt+E followed by T or Shift+Del, removes the selected text from the message. The text removed by Cut can be merged into the message in another place or into another message by using the Paste command. The Copy command, Alt+E followed by C or Ctrl+Ins, leaves the selected text intact, but places an exact copy in the Clipboard. The text copied can be merged into the message in another place or into another message by using the Paste command. The Paste command, Alt+E followed by P or Shift+Ins, inserts text from the Clipboard into the telex editor window at the cursor position. The text that is actually pasted is the currently marked block of text in the Clipboard window, placed there by either the Cut or Copy commands. The Clear command, Alt+E followed by L or Ctrl+Del, removes the selected text but does not make the text available for paste afterwards. The text removed by Clear is not copied to the Clipboard. 4-8

4 Using the telex editor 4.5 Using the clipboard As explained in the previous paragraph, the Clipboard functions as a buffer for the Cut, Copy and Paste commands. The text placed in the Clipboard by Cut and Copy can be examined and changed using the Show clipboard command on the Edit menu. To activate the Show clipboard command, use Alt+E followed by S. The Show clipboard command opens the Clipboard window, which stores the text that has been cut or copied from other editor windows. The text that is currently selected in the Clipboard window is the text used when one chooses Paste from the Edit menu. Think of the Clipboard window as a history list of cuts and copies. The contents can be changed so that the text that is merged into the other editor windows, using the Paste command, is precisely as wanted. Remember that it is the selected text from the Clipboard which is used by the Paste command. The Clipboard window is very much like the other editor windows as it can be moved, resized and the contents scrolled up and down. The only difference between the Clipboard window and the other editor windows is its reaction to the Cut and Copy commands. Text cut or copied in the Clipboard window is immediately added to the end of the text in the Clipboard window. 4.6 Inserting the current position A few special functions are available from the Edit menu in the telex editor. One of these special commands is the Insert current position command. This command will request the current position from the SES unit and insert it at the cursor position in the active telex message. Invoke the Insert current position command by Alt+E followed by O. A space is appended automatically after the position. In order for the command to work properly, the navigation information must have been entered into the SES unit previously. See the paragraph Setting navigation information (chapter 2) for details about entering the position, course and speed data. If the navigation information has not been set, the text position not set will be inserted into the telex message. 4-9

One of these special commands is the Insert current date command. This command will request the current date from the SES unit and insert it at the cursor position in the telex message. Invoke the Insert current date command by Alt+E followed by A. A space is appended automatically after the date. In order for the command to work properly, the date and time information must have been entered into the SES unit previously. See the paragraph Setting date & time (chapter 2.3) for details about entering the current date and time. 4.8 Inserting the current time A few special functions are available from the Edit menu in the telex editor. One of these special commands is the Insert current time command. This command will request the current time from the SES unit and insert it at the cursor position in the telex message. Invoke the Insert current time command by Alt+E followed by I. A space is appended automatically after the time. In order for the command to work properly, the date and time must have been previously set in the SES unit. See the paragraph Setting date & time (chapter 2.3) for details about entering the current date and time. 4.9 Using search and replace The Search menu in the telex editor provides functions for searching for arbitrary text in the active telex message. It is also possible to find and replace text in the active telex message. The Search menu has the following three menu items: Find Replace Search again The Find command, Alt+S followed by F, displays the Find dialogue box, which lets one enter a text to search for and set options that affect the search. 4-10

4 Using the telex editor The Find dialogue box contains a text-input field and a couple of check boxes. Check the Case sensitive box to differentiate upper case from lower case letters. Press TAB to move the focus to the Colour palette selection. Use the Arrow-Up and Arrow-Down keys to select between Detect, Black & White and Monochrome. Alternatively, type D to select Detect, B to select Black & White or M to select Monochrome. Selecting Detect will cause the application to detect the type of video adapter and monitor available and make the best use of the available hardware. Selecting Black & White will force the application to use a Black & White palette suitable for LCD screens. Selecting Monochrome will force the application to use a Monochrome palette suitable for monochrome screens. Press TAB to move the focus to the Print data selection. Use the Arrow-Up and Arrow-Down keys to highlight Received or Transmitted, then press the space bar to toggle the selection on or off. Alternatively, type R to toggle the Received selection or T to toggle the Transmitted selection. Enabling Received will cause all received telex data to be echoed to the printer. Enabling Transmitted will cause all telex data sent in normal Send File operations and in Conversation mode to be echoed to the printer

5 Managing the desktop TELEX over SATELLITE Press TAB to move the focus to the Receive log input field. Enter a valid MS- DOS path for the directory where received telex messages are stored originally. To select proper drive see the Maintenance section below. If the referenced directory does not exist, it will be created automatically. A valid path has the form: [<drive>:][\<directory>]{\<subdirectory>}* Press TAB to move the focus to the Received telex input field. Enter a valid MS-DOS path for the directory where received telex messages are stored after they have been read. If the referenced directory does not exist, it will be created automatically. Press TAB to move the focus to the Transmitted telex input field. Enter a valid MS-DOS path for the main directory where telex message templates and send telex messages are stored. If the referenced directory does not exist, it will be created automatically. In the specified main directory two subdirectories PREPARED and SENT will automatically be created. The PRE- PARED directory is intended for storage of prepared messages and the SENT directory is intended for storage of sent messages. Press TAB to move the focus to the Dialling directory input field. Enter a valid MS-DOS path for the file which will hold the dialling directory. If the referenced file does not exist, it will be created automatically. Press TAB to move the focus to the OK button. Press Enter to save the configuration. Alternatively, press Alt+O in any field to save the configuration. Press Esc to drop all changes and put the Configuration dialogue box away. Alternatively, press Alt+C to select the Cancel button. 5.8 Maintenance The TELEX over SATELLITE application is normally hosted in a PC equipped with programmable flash proms instead of a hard disk. This means that the only permanent storage unit is a 3 1/2 removable floppy disk. All telex messages and a few system files will be stored in this unit. It is therefore of great importance always to ensure that a floppy disk is present when running the application. If the floppy disk is full or if for other reasons the user wants to use a new disk, this is done simply by removing the old disk and inserting the new one while the application is running. Next time a floppy disk operation is performed, the floppy disk will automatically be updated. It is also possible to update the floppy disk manually by selecting OK in the Configuration dialogue box available on the File menu

5 Managing the desktop Directories and files on the floppy disk: Directories : The Configuration dialogue box specifies four different directories: Three for the storage of messages, and one for the storage of user defined telex subscribers. Directory Usage Default directory Receive log Unread received messages \RXSLOG\ Received messages Read received messages \RXS\ Transmitted messages Messages created/sent by the user \TXS\ see note Dialling directory User defined telex subscribers Root dir. on floppy Note: The TXS directory contains two sub-directories. The PREPARED directory is intended for storage of prepared messages and the SENT directory is intended for storage of sent messages. These directories are created automatically and can not be altered by the operator. Files Besides the actual messages transmitted/received the floppy disk contains the two files listed below: File Usage Default directory dial.dir Contains user defined telex subscribers Root dir. on floppy tos.ini Contains system configuration Root dir on floppy 5.9 Miscellaneous If the telex PC is not equipped with buttons for adjusting the background light intensity it is possible to make an adjustment from the keyboard. CTRL + D will decrease the background light intensity. CTRL + U will increase the background light

6 Using the dialling directory 6 Using the dialling directory The dialling directory provides easy access to telex numbers that are used repeatedly. Instead of having to key in long telex numbers every time a call is placed, the dialling directory provides access to numbers often used by means of only a few key entries. The dialling directory is kept in non-volatile storage on a floppy disk. This enables the operator to have several different dialling directories on different disks. 6.1 Inspecting the dialling directory To view the dialling directory, select Dial Directory from the main menu item File. Press Alt+F followed by D for the Dialling Directory dialogue box. The Dialling Directory dialogue box presents a list of registered telex subscribers along with command buttons for adding, deleting and editing telex subscribers. Each telex subscriber on the list is registered with a name and a number. The name is used to identify the telex subscriber and the number is used when making a call to the subscriber. The delete and edit commands work on the currently selected or highlighted telex subscriber. To highlight a telex subscriber on the list, use the Arrow-Up and Arrow-Down keys to move the highlight to the desired subscriber. When the desired subscriber is highlighted, choose the appropriate command. Figure 6-1 Dialling Directory dialogue box The list of telex subscribers may contain several more items than will fit in the display window available in the dialogue. To scroll the list, use the Arrow-Up and Arrow-Down keys to move to the next or previous telex subscriber on the 6-1

6 Using the dialling directory TELEX over SATELLITE list. Use Home or End keys to move to the first or last telex subscriber in the display window. Use key combinations Ctrl+PgUp and Ctrl+PgDn to move to the first or the last telex subscriber on the entire list. To put the dialling directory away, press Alt+C or Enter to select the Close button. Alternatively, press Esc to close the Dialling Directory dialogue box. 6.2 Adding new telex subscribers To add a new telex subscriber to the list of registered telex subscribers, activate the Insert command button by pressing Alt+I. When the Insert command is activated, the Dialling entry dialogue box will appear on the desktop. Figure 6-2 Adding entry to dialling directory Initially the fields in the Dialling entry dialogue box will be empty. Enter the name and number of the new subscriber.the name can be any string up to 22 characters long. The number can be a string composed of digits, blanks and left and right parentheses. Blanks and parentheses are used for formatting purposes only and are not transferred to the SES unit during a call. When the name and number fields have been specified, press Alt+O or Enter to choose the OK button. This will transfer the new telex subscriber to the list of registered telex subscriber. To cancel the addition of a new telex subscriber, press Alt+C or Esc to choose the Cancel button. This will close the Dialling entry dialogue box without adding a new telex subscriber to the list of registered telex subscribers. 6-2

6 Using the dialling directory 6.3 Editing telex subscribers To edit either the name or number of an existing telex subscriber, activate the Edit command button by pressing Alt+E. When the Edit command is activated, the Dialling entry dialogue box will appear on the desktop. Figure 6-3 Editing dialling directory entry The fields in the Dialling entry dialogue box will be filled with data for the selected telex subscriber. Change the name and/or number entries for the subscriber. The name can be any string up to 22 characters long. The number can be a string composed of digits, blanks and left and right parentheses. Blanks and parentheses are used for formatting purposes only and are not transferred to the SES unit during a call. When the name and/or number fields have been corrected, press Alt+O or Enter to choose the OK button. This will transfer the changes to the list of registered telex subscribers. To drop any changes made, press Alt+C or Esc to choose the Cancel button. This will close the Dialling entry dialogue box without changing the selected telex subscriber. 6-3

6 Using the dialling directory TELEX over SATELLITE 6.4 Deleting telex subscribers To delete a telex subscriber from the list of registered telex subscribers, activate the Delete command button by pressing Alt+D. Please note that activating the Delete command button will delete the selected telex subscriber immediately without further confirmation or warning. The telex subscriber is removed from the list of registered telex subscribers and the list is redrawn. Figure 6-4 Delete entry from Dialling Directory It is not possible to undo the removal of a telex subscriber from the list. If a telex subscriber is removed by accidence, there is no alternative to inserting the telex subscriber on the list again by keying in the name and number as explained in the section Adding new telex subscribers. 6-4

7 Using on-line help 7 Using on-line help The telex terminal application features an extensive on-line help system that contains context sensitive help for all dialogue boxes. Help is always only a key press away. Besides the field oriented help, the help system can be used to provide help for a specific topic or provide an overview of all the topics for which help can be obtained. 7.1 Getting help Whenever there is a need for help, press F1. This will open a help window with explanations regarding the current topic. Pressing F1 in a dialogue box will provide help concerning the active field. If none of the fields are active, general help for the dialogue box will be provided instead. To close the help window, press Esc, or choose Close from the Window menu, Alt+W followed by C. Help screens often contain keywords (highlighted text) that can be selected to get more information. Press TAB to move to any keyword; press Enter to get more detailed help regarding the highlighted keyword. Figure 7-1 Help window 7-1

7 Using on-line help TELEX over SATELLITE 7.2 Browsing the on-line help The Help menu item Contents, Alt+H followed by C, provides an overview of the help system in the form of a table of contents. From this help window, one can branch to virtually any other part of the help system. To get Help on Help, press F1 when the help window is active. The Help on Help topic can also be reached from the Help menu by selecting Using Help, Alt+H followed by U. 7.3 Using the help index The Help Index command, Alt+H followed by I or Shift+F1, opens a help window displaying a full list of help keywords. Help keywords, highlighted on help screens, allow a quick move to the related help screen. Move up and down the list of keywords using the keys TAB and Shift+TAB. Press TAB to move to the next keyword on the list. Press Shift+TAB to move to the previous keyword on the list. When an interesting keyword is highlighted, press Enter to get more detailed help on that topic. Press Esc to close the help window and leave the help index. Figure 7-2 Help index 7-2
