1 Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Download DXB2007 installation Download the latest version of DXBase by going to DXB2007.zip. I am using Google Chrome browser during this procedure, your browser will present different items but you should already have general knowledge how to use a browser. 2 Unzip DXB2007.zip After the download has finished, go to your download folder and find the new file. Right click on it and select "Extract All...". If you do not see this option, you likely have installed a zip package manager so use that for unzipping the file. Extract the installer The Extract All process wizard will ask you for the location where to unzip the file. Select wherever you want it to reside and then click the Extract button. 3 Find the unzipped installation file Go to the folder you selected for extraction and find the installer. Double-click it to start the installer. Starting the install process When you get to the welcome screen for the DXBase installer, click the Next button to proceed. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 3

4 Select directory for new installation The default directory for the installer is C:DXBASE2007. If you already have a version of DXBase 2007 installed and you wish to keep it (as a safety blanket), choose a new directory other than the directory of the current version (for example, c:\dxbase2007_110. If you do not have a previous version, accept the default (do not install DXBase 2007 in the Program Files directory!). Click the Next button to proceed. 5 Ready to start the installation Once you have chosen the desired installation directory, click the Install button. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 5

6 Installation progress When you get to this screen, the system may appear to be "thinking" a long time before you see the status bar being updated. Do not worry, the installer is checking to see what you already have installed and what needs to be changed or added. Just wait and let it finish. If you are concerned you are making a mistake, you can always click the Cancel button. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 6

7 DXbase is installed! When you (finally) see this screen, the installation has completed. Click Finish to exit the installer. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 7

8 Download patches to enable DXB help functions Microsoft changed the format for Help FIles when it released Vista. To enable the usage of the Help feature in DXBase, we need to download a special program. Point your web browser to Click on the Continue button Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 8

9 Validation by Microsoft Microsoft requires that you have a valid license of Windows before allowing you to download this patch, so click the Continue button for the validation program to download. Once its downloaded, run it and copy the validation code it presents into the entry field and click the Validate button. Find and run the Windows Patch Go to your download folder and find the file you just received. Double-click it to apply the fix. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 9

10 Download the Microsoft patch program If you are running a 64 bit version of Windows, select the x64 version to download, otherwise select the x86 version. If you do not know which version you are running, an easy way is to view the directories on your C drive. If you see a folder called "Program Files (x86)", you are running a 64 bit version of Windows, otherwise you are running the x86 (32 bit) version. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 10

11 Now enable Help macros Point your browser to and you will see the window below. Click on the link that is hightlighted to download an automated fix for enabling macros (this is required for DXBase help.) The next release will not require these patches! 12 Go to the directory where you just installed DXBase You can see in the screenshot that I installed DXB2007 in a directory called DXBase , You probably have a different location. Double-click on the folder. Open the new DXBase directory Now that the window is open, click one on the column header of the display so that the entries are sorted by their file type. 14 Open the properties window To change these files, right-click on the first one. A pop-up menu will appear. Select the Properties menu at the bottom of the list. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 14

15 Selecting the Compatibility Tab of file properties After you right-click on the file and select Properties, this window will appear. Look at the top for the Compatibility tab and click it. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 15

16 Grant Administrative priviledge to the file When the Compatibility tab displays, look at the botton under the Priviledge Level header and click on the checkbox for "Run this program as an administrator". Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 16

17 Finalize the priviliedge After checking the Run this program as an administrator checkbox, click the OK button. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 17

18 Repeat the Priviliedge process for all the programs You know how to grant Administrative priviledge to a file, now do this for the other files. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 18

19 Run DXBase If this is the first time you are running DXBase 2007, you will be greeted with this screen. Enter your full name and callsign Enter your registered name as well as your primary callsign. This should be the callsign that is the file name of the reg file you are using. 20 Import your preferences from another version? If you are upgrading from a previous version of DXBase, this version will look and offer you the opportunity to import those preferences. Click the Yes button if you wish to import the old preferences, otherwise click No. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 20

21 Select your log database Once you normally start DXBase, you will see this screen. You are given the oppotunity to select your log database as well as your QSO Log Field Layout file. Normally, you will not need to deal with this so you can click on the checkbox that says "Do not ask me this again" and can bypass this step. However, if you need to specify a different log file, you need this dialog. If you have decided not to see this dialog in the past but want to change which file you are using, there is an option in the Preferences window of DXBase to restore seeing this dialog. Click OK once you are through. If you click the Cancel button, the program will terminate. Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 21

22 The DXBase main screen Once the initial configuration is performed, you are presented with the DXBase screen. The appearance of this screen will depend on the layouts you have defined in the past. 23 Perform initial configuration At the top of the DXBase window you will see the menu items. Select the Tools menu, then click on the Options menu item Select the User Options.. menu To get to the main parameters of DXBase, you need to click on the User Options menu item. 24 DXBase main configuration window Once you have selected the User Options item of the Tools menu, you will see the main configuration window. For the first time, you should enter your lattitude, longitude andgridsquare Enter your Latitude. Nothern hemisphere locations should be positive (always include the Plus or Minus sign). Southern hemisphere users should have a negative entry. Enter your Longitude. Western locations should be positive (always include the Plus or Minus sign). Eastern users should have a negative entry. Note that this is diffferent than many other specifications of longitude (for instance, QRZ.com shows the western longitudes as negative). Next, enter your Maidenhead Grid specification. 25 Configure your rig interface If you want to configure DXBase to control your radio (and its a great feature of DXBase), connect your radio to the computer and determine what its communication parameters are (comm port, speed, data bit size, parity, stop bits, etc.) Select your rig manufacturer and model in the two list boxes at the top of the window. Once you have done that, specify the communication parameters. Click on the "Connect HF Radio 1 Serial Interface" checkbox so DXBase can automatically start talking to your radio when you start DXBase. Next, click on Internet tab. 26 Configure DXCluster Connecting to a DXCluster on the internet (or via VHF radio) is a great way to discover hams in new countries. If you are connected to the interrnet, you should connect and see worldwide DXCluster spots. If you already have a favorite DXCluster, selected it in the IP Host list box. If you do not have a favorite cluster, connect to the K3NC node (run by Neal, K3NC, the author of DXBase). Click the "Connect interface at program startup" checkbox so DXBase connects when it is initialized. Then click the OK button to save all of your preferences. 27 Show the DXCluster traffic window Now you are configured, you should click on the Window menu item and select "New Internet Cluster" menu item to see the DXCluster traffic. If you want to connect via VHF, select New VHF Packet menu item instead Installation Procedure for DXBase 2007 Page 27
